Dr. John McGlynn reposted thisDr. John McGlynn reposted thisA procurement manager I heard about signed a supplier contract last year. £80k a year, three years. Standard terms. She read it. Her ops director read it. They both signed. Six months later an invoice comes in 14% higher than they'd budgeted. They go back to the contract. Clause 11.3.b: the supplier could raise prices with inflation, capped at 8% - but only if the customer didn't object in writing within 60 days. She never noticed the "unless." So she never sent the notice. So the supplier had every right to the increase. That's £43,000 gone. Not because she was careless - she read the thing twice. But because our brains read contracts for meaning, not for logic. We see "capped at 8%" and feel safe. We don't clock that the cap only exists if we do something. This is the part of contracts nobody talks about. It's not the clauses you don't understand that get you. It's the ones you understood perfectly - that were quietly built to work against you. I've started collecting these. There are a lot of them.

I am the current chairman for Scotland for Les clefs d'Or GB and concierge of the year UK (outside of London) for the last 3 years running, and, according to my learned friends in London, the only concierge worldwide to win this type of award from a Les clefs d'Or chapter 4 times. Dr. John McGlynn liked thisDr. John McGlynn liked thisA pattern I keep noticing in conversations this month. When I talk to lawyers, ops people and founders about contract risk, almost nobody says "yeah, we've got that handled." What they actually say is some version of: "We just kind of... sign them and hope." And they say it a little embarrassed, like it's just them. It's not just them. It's almost everyone under a certain size. I've been there myself. There's no in-house lawyer, external counsel is expensive and slow, so the supplier MSA and the SaaS terms and the NDA get a quick skim and a signature. The interesting part: they all know it's a risk. They just don't have a middle option between "pay a lawyer £400 an hour" and "hope." That middle option is the entire reason Erayaha exists. Not to replace the lawyer for the deals that need one - to cover the 95% of documents that currently get nothing. If you're in the "sign and hope" camp, you're in good company. But it's worth knowing there's now something in between.

The recipes matter, of course, but the real value lies in the operating system behind them: - labour control, stock management, training, KPIs, customer experience and procedures that consistently deliver strong profits. This isn’t about selling a dream. It’s about showing what’s possible when operational systemisation becomes the competitive advantage. Last week, I was proud to graduate with a degree in International Business 💜🎓 Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much has happened. I’ve lived and studied in Hong Kong, lived and worked in Sydney, had the privilege of representing my country in university rugby league, and met some incredible people who have made the last four years unforgettable. My degree has also sparked a real interest in strategy and the energy sector, with my favourite projects exploring topics from Octopus Energy’s growth strategy to stakeholder capitalism and climate negotiations. Now it’s time for the next chapter as I move to London to explore opportunities in the energy industry. A huge thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey. I’m excited to see what comes next.
