Together with Arāya Ventures and Sie Ventures, we’re launching a fund dedicated to backing female founders building the future across AI, deeptech, fintech, healthcare, and sustainability in the UK and Europe. This moment is deeply meaningful to me. Over the past few years through Sie Ventures, we’ve supported 250+ founders, backed 25 companies through our angel syndicate, and built a community around one core belief: Exceptional founders exist everywhere, but access to capital and networks still does not. Female founders still receive less than 2% of venture funding across the UK and Europe. That statistic has not changed fast enough - and we want to be part of changing it. I’m also incredibly proud that more than 50% of our LP base is made up of women - something still far too rare in venture capital. Representation matters not only on cap tables, but around investment tables too. Victoria Armstrong reposted thisVictoria Armstrong reposted thisYesterday morning: my 8 year old is pouring milk into his porridge when he bumps the carton and milk goes everywhere. I have 3 kids, and my husband is away. In the moment, I felt a HUGE temptation to grab a teatowel and mop up the milk. I hate to brag but I'm like, way better at mopping than him. Gahhhh.... I knew that was the wrong thing to do. Sigh. Okay. The right thing was to stand back, offer non-judgemental coaching, and supervise while my son solved the problem he had created. Even though I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that this would make the rest of the morning ritual more stressful. Below I've made an infographic about small shortcuts that we parents are tempted to take but that end up causing us issues later on. It's SO understandable! (especially when we're having a hard day) But in the long run... if you are trying to build calmer family systems, the work is often less about doing more, and more about tolerating a bit of short-term discomfort so your child can practise skills they will need later. Victoria Armstrong reposted thisVictoria Armstrong reposted thisWe ask young children WAY too many questions. “What colour is that?” “What are you making?” “Why did you do it like that?” “How many are there?” I get why... It feels like the best way to show interest in their world! But with under-5s, questions often do something unintended: They pull children out of their own thinking and into 'performance mode'. Instead of staying with their internal plan, the child starts 🧒Scanning for the ‘right’ answer 🧒Thinking about adult approval 🧒Narrowing their exploration to whatever the grownup is talking about This shows up clearly in early-years research on play and executive function, and I *feel* it every single day with my own 3 year old. Young children think best when their attention stays inside the activity, not split between the task and an adult’s evaluation. Instead of asking a question, try 'sportscasting' what the child is doing. I always have my best conversations with my 3 year old when I remember to do this, and always end up feeling far more connected afterwards. 'Sportscasting' might look like this: ❌ “What is it?” ✅ “You’re stacking the long blocks on top!” ❌ “Why did you choose that?” ✅ “You went back to the blue one again!” ❌ “How many have you got?” ✅ “You filled the whole tray!” When you 'sportscast' rather than question, you: 1. Reduce working-memory load 2. Protect the child's intrinsic motivation 3. Support longer attention spans 4. Communicate that you trust your kid Questions are powerful if a child is stuck, or you're co-planning something together, or reflecting afterwards. Victoria Armstrong reposted thisVictoria Armstrong reposted thisUnpopular opinion: ‘Gentle play’ is fine. But ‘rough play’ is essential! Parents today are constantly saying "Be kind!" "Be careful!" "Slow down!" There's one essential form of play we need to make sure has its turn too: Roughhousing. 'Roughhousing' is a funny old word, isn't it. (How many Hs? I had to google it!) It means warm, physical, high-energy play. - Rolling on the bed - Safe wrestling on the carpet - Pillow shoves, gentle tipping into cushions - Climbing on you, tumbling around in a controlled, playful way. Silly and safe. Because roughhousing borders lots of tricky topics like violence, consent, aggression, and physical risk, it's often discouraged by parents. BUT - the science is clear. Roughhousing is Regulation! Here's how this kind of play is a neurological workout: 🧠 It strengthens regulation. Research shows that rough-and-tumble play activates prefrontal cortex circuits. It gives children real-time practice moving from high arousal (up) back to calm (down). 🤝 It sharpens social skills. Children track tiny signals during rough play - a little pause in movement, a shoulder softening, eye eye contact that says “keep going.” This rapid, turn-taking physical dialogue is directly linked to stronger cooperation and social boundary setting. ⚡️ It improves stress recovery. Short bursts of intense physical activity followed by a clean, safe comedown strengthens the body’s ability to bounce back quickly after overwhelm. ❤️ It deepens connection. Shared movement and mutual laughter are instant releases of oxytocin! Two types of kids really need roughhousing for calibration. 1. The Children Who "Run Hot" You know you have one of these if their feelings arrive at full strength. They often: - Escalate fast and stay loud - Seem always "on" - Find transitions incredibly tough Roughhousing gives these high-reactive children a playful, safe space to practice slowing down, pausing, and returning to their emotional baseline. 2. The Children Who "Run Cool" These kids are cautious, hesitant, and slow to warm up. Controlled physical challenge can build their confidence, physical agency, and assertiveness, all in tiny, predictable steps. I've put a simple, age-based guide for safe roughhousing in the carousel. But nearly 17 years ago, the global response to my TED Conferences 2009 talk launching MakeLoveNotPorn in its original iteration as a public service announcement, showed I'd uncovered a huge social issue. So I built the (proven concept) solution. I didn't set out to be an edtech founder. But from day one of MLNP, parents and teachers reached out begging me to build the 0-18 and beyond sex education extension of MLNP. So I conceived the solution - MakeLoveNotPorn Academy. It's taken 10 years to build MLNP Academy, because that's how long investors have refused to fund it. I didn't set out to be a fintech founder. But for 13 years, Stripe, PayPal and mainstream fintech have refused to work with me, because 'adult content'. I've spent 13 years battling hypocritical Silicon Valley giants who refuse to work with a female-lens, 100% human-curated solution to one of the biggest and most fundamental issues driving negative societal impact today. I've spent 13 years paying out 12% of my revenue every month in payment processing fees alone, because I have to work with 'adult-friendly' payment companies who extort businesses like mine. I've spent 13 years, not able to scale, but having to focus instead on sheer business survival. Which showed me the huge financial opportunity in so-called 'restricted businesses' - not just sextech, but cannabis, psychedelics, crypto itself, plus businesses you would never think would be restricted, but are (Stripe now refuses to work with crowdfunding platforms). Which is why I'm now building BlockFree, to free us all from the blocks of fintech injustice. When you have a truly worldchanging startup, you have to change the world to fit it, not the other way round. When the ecosystem that should help you scale and thrive, shuts you out - BUILD YOUR OWN ECOSYSTEM. (I didn't set out to be an adtech or an AI founder, either, but both are on my infrastructure roadmap, because MLNP is banned from advertising, and female-lens AI solutions to negative societal impact aren't getting funded.) When this platform suppresses my professional posts about my businesses from reaching my over 141,000 followers who could support, help and fund them - it's not just me who loses out. It's the parents, teachers, children and young people who desperately need the education I want to provide. It's the female sextech/femtech/health founders who are also unjustly shut out from the business ecosystem. It's everyone who needs to be inspired by proof that you can build outside the system, to change the system. Here's how we can fight back: I think about this ALL the time - when I open X (and usually immediately regret it) and when I look at my 8 year old son. There's a shortage of positive male role models for kids to look up to, and that vacuum makes many boys easy targets for predators who exploit confusion and insecurity. I've compiled my own list of male role models - covering sports, arts, science, and everyday people. Forgive me if some aren't real (like Bandit from Bluey), and the real ones aren't all perfect humans (who is?). But each one offers a positive take on character, kindness, work ethic, or creativity. Now when my son wants screen time, I stealth encourage him towards these guys. We can fight back against the chancers. There are countless great ways to be a man - let's help our sons and daughters see that! Loads of research shows this. For example, one study reviewed last year in Developmental Science gave four-year-olds just NINE MINUTES of a fast-paced cartoon and compared the group to kids who watched slower content or drew pictures. The fast-TV group performed significantly worse on tasks requiring focus and self-control immediately afterwards. What's WAY better for kid's brains is the ‘Slow TV’ we all grew up with, with soft colours and gentle pacing. ㅤ And what’s really cool is, you can still find it. While the premise is fictional, the conversations it sparks are very real. From having your expertise questioned to being underestimated in leadership, many women know what it's like to navigate workplaces and systems that weren't designed with them in mind. By turning the tables, the movie offers a fresh perspective on experiences that are often overlooked or dismissed.
