Recently, I was part of a panel of fireside chat at Mediacorp Pte Ltd’s Gov Day, attended by Marketers and Agencies folks from the public gov sector, who shape Singapore’s national (often, serious) narratives. But serious doesn’t mean sterile. If anything, it demands even more creativity, more empathy, more humanity. In a world where content is increasingly produced at breakneck speed especially with #AI, it’s easy to forget that technology is just an enabler. The real craft is balancing tech with storytelling. Mirroring purchasing funnel to move from awareness to purchase intent, As the audience were from gov public sector, with more serious messaging, I shared two campaigns from my 2019 Manulife days with similar serious messaging underpinning them. A few key thoughts I shared: (1) Start with a Sharp Human Insight. Note: Insights are not observations. make you go “Oh….i didn’t realise that.” Statues Campaign, Manulife, 2019: What if the famous limbless statues we admire were our customers seeking disability insurance? That single question unlocked CGI storytelling, AR activations, taxi ads with “missing arms,” and on-ground conversations that people actually remembered. Stop the Drama, Manulife, 2019: Movies taught us heart attacks look dramatic. Real life doesn’t. So we “hijacked” the Singapore Heart Foundation’s press conference (with prior approval from them) and used a social experiment video with veteran actor Lim Kay Tong to expose the misconception. A serious message, delivered through a simple, human truth. (2) Strategy Only Works When It’s Different and Effective. Not louder. Not trendier. Just braver, clearer, and truer to the insight. (3) Anchor Everything From One Central Idea. Then, Extend From There. If your idea can’t be explained in one breath, your audience won’t hold theirs. (4) The Golden Rule: Don’t Sell The Product, Sell The Benefits. Emotional connection isn’t just “cry content.” Surprise, curiosity, joy, discomfort, even a quiet chuckle — all of these move people. And movement is how change begins. (5) Re-Target with Product USPs/ Short Case Study Re-engage audiences who’ve shown interest by serving them sharp product benefits or real proof points. This moves them from awareness to consideration — with credibility, not noise. Singapore’s journey to becoming a global FinTech hub wasn’t accidental. We were a well-placed trading port with global ambitions, and one of the first countries to dedicate a national-level focus to fintech. When I co-founded the Singapore FinTech Association (SFA) Association in 2016, it was alongside the launch of the inaugural Singapore FinTech Festival (SFF). It wasn’t just another event. It was a global signal of intent. I remember Sopnendu Mohanty Roy T. Ai Boon Ong-Ang putting together foundations of what created history. But what made it work wasn’t just early action. It was the whole ecosystem moving together: startups, regulators, and financial institutions, powered by a philosophy I call RFFL: Right First, Fast Later. It’s about building the right foundations first, then scaling with speed and confidence we advanced through purpose based corporation Fintech Nation From national digital identity and payments rails to startup-friendly regulation, together we’ve built systems that other countries now cite as a playbook. But I’ve always said, “FinTech is not a sprint. It’s a relay.” Each generation passes the baton. Ours now faces new challenges: capital recycling, API interoperability, and the real cost of scaling from a small domestic market. Over the past decade, I’ve witnessed a vibrant community where regulators become collaborators, students become founders - sending a signal from Singapore to the world that innovation can be inclusive and sustainable. As we mark SG60 and SFF's 10th anniversary, this celebration is also a checkpoint. The next decade won’t be about funding rounds or hackathons alone. It’ll be about scale, liquidity, and leadership, with a new playbook to take companies from 10x to 100x. We'll need to reskill our workforce for an AI-first world and back founders who can build global champions from a small domestic base. So, here’s the real question: Who will build the next billion-user fintech? And how do we stay bold, not just safe? When we pushed for a genuine digital first mindset, it was never meant to be lip service. For a six decade old traditional bank, real transformation had to start at the core. In mid 2019, we created the Digital Committee, our Digicom, chaired by Board Chairperson Helen Yuchengco Dee and co chaired by then President and CEO Eugene Acevedo. It became our “Board within the Board,” an expressway where bold ideas could be presented, approvals accelerated, and execution scaled without friction. We anchored this shift on a simple truth: inclusion is a product design discipline, not CSR. If the user experience intimidates, if value is unclear, if trust is intangible, the system fails. That is why we do not celebrate access, we celebrate activation. Open account KPIs are performative. Behavioral metrics are transformative. And local is never small. Localization is how you scale adoption in the world’s most cash dense economies. The results spoke for themselves. In just six years, RCBC was recognized as Euromoney’s Best Bank for Digital in the Philippines for six consecutive years, a first in Asia. During the same period, we earned more than 400 accolades, including distinctions from Gartner and YouTube, reflecting global recognition of our digital execution, innovation, and impact. Our inclusive innovations also caught the world’s attention. DiskarTech was featured in Mastercard’s Inclusion by Design study, making us the first in Asia and only the second globally after Brazil’s Nubank, another milestone proving that inclusive design and hyperlocal engagement can win on the world stage. Today, these recognitions are simply the outcome of a philosophy we continue to live by: value banking powered by APIs, embedded finance, and ecosystem partnerships that deliver meaningful, everyday impact.
