Hyebin is the leader of the Kpop group Momoland: - 1M subs on Youtube, 193M views - 1.4M monthly Spotify listeners She broke down the following numbers: - Average booking fee for Kpop idol - US$38,000 - Agency takes 50% cut - Idols pay out of their own pocket for expenses like fuel and make up for said event - Remaining profit is divided by 9 (that's how big their group was) - Hyebin finally ends up with US$1,300 after each event. But that's not the end of it. Hyebin shares that she doesn't even get to keep that US$1,300. - All K-pop stars incur massive debts at a very young age during their trainee period (i.e. lessons, food, housing, studio rental) - These debts are billed in a "post-paid system" once they hit commercial success. - Idols are also expected to pay to make their own music videos. - "Every time we shoot a music video, tens of thousands of my own money vanishes" - "The money makes a U-turn before it even touches my bank account" Meanwhile, the K-pop label behind BTS reported their highest Q1 revenue of US$473M. To me, this is absolutely bonkers. My own YT channel has only 25k subs and <1% of this group's views. Yet I can comfortably make a few thousands on a low month while only working 1-2hr a week. IMO the real issue here is ownership. I own everything I create. Well technically I don't own the YT platform. But it's way better than giving up 50% of my future earnings to an agency. While owing 100% of the costs before I "make it". We cannot get rich by renting out our time. Seek out your piece of ownership. Keep fighting your good fight.

Shao Chun C. shared thisA surprise benefit of being laid off? Making way more new friends. I turned 40 this year (😬). A common complaint among my peers is the difficulty of making new friends while working. (and good luck to singles trying to find a partner 🤞) I consider myself well-liked and connected in my previous workplace with many work friends. But post layoff, many of these relationships had sadly fizzled out and I only managed to stay in touch with <1% of them (you know who you are 🙏). One of the lesser discussed consequences of layoffs is the loneliness. Then I finally started my own YouTube channel after years of self doubt. And started to share my failings and setbacks here too. Many kind strangers have watched my videos and sent their support. That in turn had led to so many amazing opportunities: - Brand partnerships - Job offers - Fractional projects - Funding (yup acquiring a stake in YT channels is a thing) - Industry experts' tips & guidance. But the most priceless thing I got out of this new chapter is meeting new people and making new friends. I have met so many of my viewers for coffee. And because I am no longer employed, all these "coffee chats" felt more genuine. No hidden agenda or asks. Just people who enjoy my work and want to support me or know me better. It's true that I no longer have any prestigious job titles. And my earnings are extremely volatile (this month is -80% MoM 😭). But I do feel my life is richer now. So the cliche is true; a door closes so another can open. Keep fighting your good fight. (photo taken at my first ever live event where many of my friends had turned up to support 🥰)

Shao Chun C. shared thisEnding H1 with my 7th brand deal of the year with Airalo! I initially thought it would be extremely difficult to convince brands to work with my relatively new channel. And it really was. But after spending 14 years in sales, I found myself applying the same skill set to win over these brands. Back when I was in tech, most people would avoid any sales-related career path. Or at least tolerate it until they find a better role. I remember dreading it too, for the constant quota carrying burden x dashboard manipulation & reporting = burnout. But I also knew that real on-the-ground sales experience (and the ability to handle rejections) is very precious. So when I was laid off, I applied those same skills to build up a small pipeline of paying customers for my channel. And now it has pivoted to an inbound lead gen system where I no longer need to do much prospecting and brands keep knocking on my door. So you may be facing burnout in your current job. Or perhaps you feel like you are in limbo with your career progression. Or you had just been let go. Your skills and experience will not go wasted. Just keep applying yourself and new opportunities will come. Keep fighting your good fight.

Shao Chun C. shared thisWhat students have been told in Singapore: When they are age 2-20: "Study hard. You will get a higher salary when you grow up. You can play when you are older" When they are 20-24: "Be realistic. Lower your salary expectations." When they are 25-30: "Just because you have a degree doesn't mean anything. What extra skills are you bringing to the table?" I used to teach at one of the best business schools in Singapore. And I saw how the popular narrative paints these students / younger generations as demanding, entitled and soft. My students countered that the "entitlement" is merely them asking us (society/schools/leaders/employers/media) to honour what we had told them for years to justify them sacrificing their childhood and make studying their core (and often only) identity.

I guess everyone must be really 𝐨̶𝐮̶𝐭̶𝐫̶𝐚̶𝐠̶𝐞̶𝐝̶ interested in Singapore's cost of living. The best part is that I also secured my 6th brand deal of the year with Longbridge Singapore! You know the cliche concept of ikigai? Follow your passion etc etc? Well the crazy part is that random people keep coming up to talk to me in multiple countries and show me support while partners like the good people at LongBridge want to keep supporting me. My goal is to hit the vanity metric of 100k subs on YouTube and see where this brings me. "If you have a dream, pursue it" - every self-help influencer out there. Keep fighting your good fight. So I included these in my JD: - 100% remote I can't afford an office for you anyway. - 100% fractional You can work for someone else / have side hustles / build your own business. - No meetings ever Everything is done on slack / teams / whatsapp. - No emails / pre-read / decks Nope. - No video calls ever No more "hey can you switch on your camera". - No small talk needed No awkward Mondays "hey how was your weekend?". - No working after office hours No "pls fix" notifications at night - No hypothetical "what would you do if...." interview questions Everything is based on your current portfolio and how it can solve my problems right now. - No education requirements AI has made everyone smarter. - No annual performance review You get instant feedback after every project via chat You get full transparency on my pipeline and if business improves, you get paid more. - 4 days work week I don't want to work on Fridays as much as you. Shared the above to a small network. Inbox exploded. Hired the right person the next week. Keep fighting your good fight.
