João Pires shared thisAnother great edition of the Slovenian AI tech meetup with Jure Leskovec presenting Kumo and their use of graph neural networks and predictive queries to build high-accuracy models. They make it really easy to answer questions like “Who’s likely to buy?” or “What should we do next?”. Making this kind of technology accessible to the likes of small e-commerce owners without huge datasets.João Pires shared thisWe are honored to have Stanford professor and Kumo.ai cofounder Dr. Jure Leskovec as speaker at the 4th Slo AI tech meetup.

João Pires shared thisWonderful weekend in Ljubljana with the European Design Awards, organised by the Fundacija Brumen, full of great chats, strolls and the good company of fellow designers from all over Europe. Especially happy to have Bürocratik and Studio Eduardo Aires from my home country visiting the city I now call home, collecting three Gold prizes. Congrats to CLEVER°FRANKE for being named European Design Agency of the Year 2025, well deserved. If you haven't had a chance to pop by, these are my personal notes from each talk: Petra Černe Oven on the importance of Jože Brumen’s Swiss-modern poetry for the design culture in Slovenia that still inspires local designers today. Augustinas Paukste from andstudio on the challenges of rebranding their local Lithuanian basketball team, and how they approached their fans to really understand what they needed to deliver and have their support. Agyei Archer from TypeTogether on decentralised, culturally rich type design and how they created a global collaborative network of type designers. Dorotea Škrabo aka skrabzi on her playful nostalgia via green-screen storytelling, and why we should put scrappy, real stuff out there, in an era where everything is fake and polished. Andrej & Andrej and the identity they created for the faculty they attended while students and as there was never a logo since its beginnings, they hilariously re-imagined what it could have looked like over the years. Anna-Mari Tenhunen and her struggles with the creative process while designing book covers and how she really immerses herself and adapts depending on the book's theme. Valerio Monopoli from Morula Type as one of the most prolific type designers I've seen in a long time and how he pushes himself by setting goals like 36 days of type, one typeface a day. Lemke Meijer from Gagarín on immersive, place-rooted interactive content and how it truly is important to not create these experiences via VR. Nejc Prah and his take on symbolic repetition and left‑hand creativity, showcasing examples of vernacular design and how that inspires his work. Aurelija Mockeviciute from CLEVER°FRANKE and her wish for a future in which all designers become data visualisation designers, showing how project mindsets can shift between chaos, order, the finite, and the infinite to make data more expressive and meaningful. It's not often you get the chance to have an event of this calibre in Ljubljana, and I was truly happy to have the city filled with such number of amazing design talent. See you next year in Sofia, Bulgaria! #EDF25

João Pires shared thisHappy to see my client Iron Wolf Capital raise their second fund to back early-stage DeepTech and AI startups in the Baltics for a total of €100 million. They'll be investing in 25 early-stage DeepTech startups across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Baltic diaspora with focus on AI, robotics, photonics, and space innovation. Well done Viktoras Jucikas and the rest of the team!João Pires shared thisOur team at Iron Wolf Capital is very proud to announce the launch of our newest, EUR 100M early-stage Baltic deep tech & AI fund! 🚀 Targeting 25 early-stage companies across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Baltic diaspora, the fund will back deep tech startups in sectors such as AI, robotics, photonics, and space innovation. As we have been raising this fund, we have also consciously worked on building a world-class team of the most international and diverse venture talent in the Baltics. Our team currently spans London, Warsaw, Vilnius, and Tallinn, is equally split by gender, and uniquely operator-led, at a time when just 8% of European VCs have former founders at the helm. We will continue to lead and co-lead our investments, maintaining a high-bar, low-volume approach, backing only 6–8 startups annually. More details on the new fund, our plans with it, and its significance have been covered in a Sifted exclusive linked in the comments below, together with a link to submit your pitch to us.

João Pires shared thisA year ago, I shared some thoughts on how AI had started reshaping the ways and processes we rely on to design. Those who learnt the *hard way*, through trial, feedback, and deep thinking, know that real value comes from more than just templated output. Now, more than ever, I believe it's up to that generation to demonstrate the true value a designer brings to the table, through creativity, intuition, and critical thinking, to drive meaningful design.

João Pires shared this✨ Stunning work by our client KARL LAGERFELD MAISON.João Pires shared thisKARL LAGERFELD MAISON introduces the Wellen Collection. With Wellen being the German name for waves, the second KARL LAGERFELD MAISON collection launches during Milan Design Week, and is a nod to the prominent presence of curves and flowing lines identified in Karl’s sketches. Rib stitches and other playful touches that infused the 1970s fashion and architecture, as well as Karl’s designs, have influenced each piece throughout the living, dining and bedroom sets. At the heart of the collection, the midnight blue velvet sofa is a versatile centerpiece that embodies Karl’s playful spirit. With its ten sectional elements, it offers endless configurations for any occasion. The Labradorite dining table exudes elegance with its iridescent surface and steel-coated legs resembling conical columns. The chrome sofa and armchairs make a unique style statement in the living room, evoking the spirit of the 1970s with their unexpected color and playful design. Karl’s iconic rib stitching is reimagined across the collection, combining comfort with creativity in every detail.

João Pires reposted thisJoão Pires reposted this💡 Design systems serve as the foundation of cohesive and efficient product development. These comprehensive sets of standards, components, and guidelines ensure consistency across a company's digital offerings and facilitate a unified user experience. However, as businesses scale and diversify, managing a design system across multiple design teams or squads presents unique challenges that can lead to its failure over time. Our latest article explores the ideal governance model for a design system within a corporate business, the disciplines involved, the aspects of planning, and how to secure management buy-in. João Pires reacted on thisJoão Pires reacted on thisSLOAI x Google: Search & Reasoning that's a wrap. 👏 On Thursday we brought two of the most experienced AI engineers from the region to Grand Plaza Hotel in Ljubljana, both from Google's team in Croatia, for an evening of genuinely technical conversation. 300+ of you filled the room. Damir Sabol opened with a look inside how the Google Zagreb team builds LLM-powered features for Google Search and the Google app how Gemini models are being used to develop new Search experiences, straight from the people building them. Marko Velic followed with the harder question: do LLMs actually reason, or just appear to? He unpacked how reasoning emerges in large models, the role of scale, and where reinforcement learning fits. Thank you, Damir and Marko, for making the trip and giving us the view from the inside. Thanks to *codeplain for sponsoring this event and thank you to everyone who showed up, asked sharp questions, and stayed for the conversations afterwards. This is exactly the kind of room SLOAI exists to build.

João Pires reacted on thisJoão Pires reacted on this30 years ago today, I released my first website. I had no computer, no design or coding skills, just a killer client and a record that needed promotion. Five months later, on May 15th, 1996, the Moonspell website launched and earned my first award: Top 5% Portugal. I learned everything on the fly from the computer room of my Chemical Engineering department, guided by Nuno Oliveira, with coding help from Ricardo M Oliveira and Pedro Cravinho shaping the wolves’ visual universe in Photoshop. That period changed my life and laid the foundations for everything I still do today. Without that Apple Macintosh, connected to a scanner Nuno built in the aquarium room of LACA, things would have turned out very differently. What a wonderful fluke. Curiously enough, Bürocratik also turns 20 today, so May 15th has become a pivotal date in my life. Long live Moonspell and Büro.

João Pires liked thisJoão Pires liked thisSocial media is often seen as an amplifier of disinformation narratives, but evidence from Hungary's recent election suggests it can also be used to fight back. Hungary's election last month was marred by disinformation in the media. The false narratives that supported Viktor Orbán’s bid to extend his 16-year rule included the claim that the opposition leader Peter Magyar was a foreign agent. Supposed evidence was found on Hungary’s national holiday a few days before voting, when activists unfurled a four-metre Ukrainian flag at Magyar’s party’s rally. Photos of the flag were shared quickly and widely by pro-government press on social media, but a counter narrative campaign to set the record straight was launched within 24 hours. News outlet 444.hu (Magyar Jeti Zrt.) had identified the activists as members of Orbán’s digital campaign, planting the flag to smear Magyar. In their study of the public debate during the election, narrative intelligence firm Repsense found that the attempt to fabricate evidence to smear Magyar backfired. As shown in the figure below, the initial disinformation operation enjoyed a viral intensity score of 28 on Facebook. But the counter narrative operation scored 44, reaching 50% of its total audience in under one hour. It was a pattern that was repeated throughout the election campaign. Repsense identified 162 distinct narrative threads during the 95-day pre-election period, spanning 180,000 public Facebook posts and 15,000 TikTok videos. For almost all of the disinformation operations online, there was a stronger and more viral counter narrative that opposed the original falsehoods. As Mykolas Katkus, co-founder and CEO of Repsense, told Balticnews.com: “Hungary's citizens used the same platforms not as passive consumers of propaganda, but as an active counter-disinformation force. This is a dynamic that echoes the earliest promise of social media as a tool for civic resistance – which brings the memories of the Arab Spring days.” #Hungary #HungarianElection #Disinformation #SocialMedia #CounterNarrative #Orban #Magyar #Tisza #Fidesz #ElectionIntegrity #MediaLiteracy #Democracy #Repsense #NarrativeIntelligence #EuropeanPolitics

João Pires liked thisJoão Pires liked thisQuiet months usually mean building months. Over the past period, I’ve been working hands-on across a handful of AI-driven products. What stood out isn’t just the technology, but how quickly things become complex—and how much clarity actually matters. The difference between something feeling powerful or overwhelming often comes down to how it’s shaped. There’s a lot of noise around AI right now, and a lot of focus on what could go wrong. But being close to the work, it’s hard not to feel optimistic. The tools are getting better, but more importantly, the opportunities to build thoughtful, genuinely useful products are growing fast. - I’m opening up a few new project slots. If you’re building in this space and need clarity in how things come together, feel free to reach out.

João Pires reacted on thisJoão Pires reacted on this✨ Ready for a new chapter After 10 years, it’s time to say goodbye to A1 Slovenija d.d. After living in London and working for creative agencies such as Publicis and Sapient Nitro, I felt a strong pull to move back home to Ljubljana. A decade ago, I made that move and joined A1 Slovenia on the client side working in the Marketing Comms team, a decision that shaped both my professional and personal journey. Over the years, we delivered numerous campaigns together with creative agencies, helping shape communications for more than 500,000 customers. Some highlights include the rebranding campaign from Si.mobil to A1, launching integrated campaigns across TV, OOH, Digital and Social, supporting flagship device launches for world class brands like Apple and Samsung, and lately introducing AI tools to optimise processes. Along the way, I also took a meaningful two-year pause to focus on raising my two little humans which has been my biggest and best project so far. ✨ What I’ll cherish most are the people and the culture: the team spirit, shared wins and challenges, the events, and the many moments in between. It’s been a great ride! Thank you to my MA team (you will truly be missed), my colleagues, partners, and everyone I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Now, I’m excited for what’s next. As I’m taking some time off, please get in touch if you’d like to grab a coffee or have a quick chat.

João Pires liked thisJoão Pires liked thisI was born in Serbia. I came to Slovenia to build this. Kinta launches May 1. An AI financial coach that adapts to each user's psychology, built for millions of Europeans who've quit every budgeting app because each one treats them like the problem. They're not. The apps are. We're raising €300-500K. But money is only part of what we need. We also need: Investors who back early-stage CEE fintech. Advisors who've built consumer products in Europe. Founders who've launched from a small market and lived to tell about it. Anyone who can introduce us to one of the above. Comment, DM, or share. Whatever's easiest. Serbia gave the world Nordeus. Slovenia gave the world Outfit7. I came from one country to build in the other, and I want Kinta to belong to both. Balkan founders don't get far by waiting for permission. We get there by showing up for each other. This is me showing up. Your turn.

This is our Sales team (+ me behind the camera) - the most talkative and the most coffee consuming team at #Repsense. I am happy to say that this is the kind of place where you can ask a stupid question without it becoming "a thing". We're a small but genuinely passionate group, building something we believe in. It's not always glamorous, but it's rarely boring. If you're curious to learn what we do, or wish to participate in our country guessing game, my door is open.

João Pires liked thisJoão Pires liked thisI visited the Google offices today and had a great discussion with a few DeepMind engineers about spec-driven development. We explored some practical questions: how to handle complex systems through specs, how to maintain separation of concerns, and how specs can help guide architectural decisions over time. At *codeplain, we’re working on ways to tackle these problems using examples from real projects. Thanks Mitja T. for the warm welcome!
