Drivers often press harder on the accelerator believing they’ll beat traffic, shorten the commute and arrive noticeably earlier. A nationwide U.S. study has now put that assumption to the test using more than 120 million real-world vehicle trips, and the answer is surprisingly small: sticking to the posted speed limit would add only about 54 seconds to the average person’s daily driving time. That tiny difference came alongside far larger gains in fuel savings, lower emissions and reduced driving costs, challenging one of the most common habits on the road.
According to a study published in Communications Sustainability, the analysis covered four representative days in 2021 and found that many motorists were accepting higher risks and greater fuel consumption for less than a minute of time saved each day.

When the same journeys were modelled as though drivers had obeyed speed limits throughout, the average increase in travel time amounted to less than one minute per driving day. The researchers calculated that the extra time worked out to roughly 6.3 minutes per week or about 27 minutes per month for a typical driver, a figure far smaller than many people expect when deciding to exceed the speed limit.
According to the Nature paper, speeding consistently produced only modest time gains despite being widespread across the national road network.
Fuel, money and emissions told a very different storyThe study found that the biggest effects of speeding were not measured in minutes but in fuel burned and carbon released into the atmosphere. Driving within posted speed limits would have reduced fuel consumption by 2.4% to 3%, depending on the season. Extrapolated across the United States, that translated into savings of more than 6.7 million gallons of gasoline every day, roughly $22 million in daily fuel costs based on 2021 prices, and around 57,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each day. The researchers estimated that the annual fuel savings would be comparable to removing about 5.5 million conventional passenger vehicles from American roads. Study co-author Professor William Northrop said drivers hoping to save a single minute would indeed need to drive faster, but those prioritising safety and fuel economy would be better served by staying at or below the speed limit.

They acknowledge that their modelling did not account for how widespread behavioural changes might alter traffic flow, but the overall conclusion remained clear: slowing down produces measurable economic and environmental benefits while imposing only a minimal time penalty on individual motorists. For commuters who routinely exceed speed limits to gain what feels like a meaningful advantage, the findings offer a simple calculation. The minute many drivers believe they are saving rarely exists, while the extra fuel consumed and the added crash risk remain very real.
