🌱 How do children learn whom to trust, what to imitate, and which knowledge is worth passing on? This summer, the Koç University Summer Research Program — KUSRP offers another opportunity to explore the fascinating world of psychological research. Led by Asst. Prof. Nazli Altinok at the Social Learning and Behavior Lab — (So-Be Lab), the project “The Roots of Cultural Learning: Imitation, Trust and Choice” examines how preschool children decide whom to trust, how they respond to challenging tasks, and which actions they choose to copy and teach to others. Cultural learning begins much earlier than we may realize. By studying how children observe, trust, imitate and make choices, this research helps us better understand how they become active and socially competent members of their communities. KUSRP also gives highschool, undergraduate and graduate students from outside Koç University the opportunity to take part in an active research environment, develop new skills and contribute to academic projects. We thank Dr. Nazli Altinok and members of the So-Be Lab (deren ateş Berkin Ozkirisci) for supporting young researchers and contributing to this valuable learning experience. #KoçUniversity #KUSRP #SummerResearch #PsychologyResearch #DevelopmentalPsychology #CulturalLearning #SocialLearning #ResearchOpportunities #SoBeLab

How do you teach a cell-detection model to focus on the parts of an image that are most representative and challenging? Published in Medical Image Analysis , one of the leading journals in the field, “Topology-Guided Hard Example Mining for Cell Detection” answers this question with TG-HEM—a novel training strategy that enables a network to focus on the regions where it struggles most. Hard example mining (HEM) is based on a simple idea: rather than treating every training sample equally, prioritize the difficult and informative ones. This can improve accuracy and robustness without modifying the model architecture or adding inference costs. The challenge, however, is defining what constitutes a “hard” example, as this is highly domain-specific. This study experimentally investigates the effects of various HEM techniques on cell detection and demonstrates that the topological information embedded in cellular arrangements is critical for identifying hard examples and achieving accurate detection. TG-HEM transforms topological information into a region-level difficulty signal. Using persistent homology, it measures the topological dissimilarity between ground-truth and predicted cell distributions across image regions. It then reweights the loss so that backpropagation concentrates on the regions with the greatest discrepancy. Key highlights of the proposed method: • Dynamically prioritizes challenging samples at both the region level, through topological discrepancy, and the pixel level, through prediction uncertainty. • Computes topological features directly from 2D spatial coordinates rather than computationally intensive pixel grids, resulting in a negligible impact on training time. • Enables networks to capture global patterns and higher-order spatial organization in cell distributions. • Consistently enhances counting and localization accuracy without adding model complexity or inference-time slowdowns. • Introduces KUCell, a new in-house dataset released to support further cell-detection research. Across two datasets and eight different detection models, TG-HEM consistently outperforms standard baselines and existing HEM strategies in both counting and localization accuracy. From Curiosity to Discovery: Summer Researchers Unearth the Past at Tell Kurdu Our summer research students are gaining invaluable hands-on experience at Tell Kurdu, one of the most significant prehistoric settlements in the Amuq Plain of Hatay. Situated at the crossroads of Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Levant, Tell Kurdu offers an exceptional setting for investigating the development of early settled communities, social organization, and regional interaction during the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Working directly in the field gives our curious young researchers a rare opportunity to connect academic knowledge with archaeological discovery and contribute to a deeper understanding of life thousands of years ago. We are deeply grateful to Prof. Rana Özbal and the entire excavation team for opening the door to this extraordinary learning experience and for inspiring and supporting the next generation of researchers. #SummerResearch #TellKurdu #Archaeology #FieldResearch #UndergraduateResearch #StudentResearchers #ResearchExperience #HandsOnLearning #ArchaeologicalExcavation #PrehistoricArchaeology
