Materials: One infant skeleton retrieved form the bathhouse of an abandoned Roman fort and dated between the 2nd and the 4th centuries AD. Methods: All available skeletal elements were analyzed macroscopically. In addition, the isotopic signatures (δ 13 C and δ1 5 N) and the control region of the human mitochondrial genome for this archaeological sample were analyzed. Results: Based on dental development and long bone length, the skeleton was aged between birth and 2 months of age. Pathological lesions were noted on the mandible and diaphyses of long bones, but spared the metaphyses. Conclusions: The perinatal age of the individual, along with lesion morphology and location, suggests a diagnosis of infantile cortical hyperostosis. Limitations: The analysis would benefit from further stable isotope and mitochondrial genome analyses, which was limited due to the absence of comparative human and faunal remains from the site. Suggestions for further research: Further multidisciplinary research on human archaeological remains from Romania would provide a clearer image of past disease and life histories in this geographic area.

the project for the construction of the motorway Nădlac – Arad, Arad County. With this occasion, two graves
belonging to the Migration Period dated during the middle of the 6th century AD were discovered. Due to the
topographical position of these two graves it is believed that they are part of a bigger necropolis belonging to the
so-called Reihengräberfeld type of cemeteries, typical for the 6th century AD in this geographical and cultural area.
Strong connections with the Merovingian milieu are observed while studying the composition of their funerary
inventories, testifying for the complexity and heterogeneity of the 6th century AD group of discoveries linked with
the eastern Germanic tribes known, from the ancient literary accounts, to have inhabited this region. This newly
identified necropolis can be associated with the group of similar discoveries documented in the western part of
Romania, the Tisza region and in the northern part of nowadays Serbia generally connected with the presence of
the Gepids.
skeletons and commingled remains sampled from an ossuary. The analysis targeted the assessment
of the minimum number of individuals for the commingled assemblage, sex and age at
death estimations, and the identification of pathological aspects. A total number of 86 individuals
were identified in both sub-groups, of which 50 are represented by sub-adults and 36
by adults. Taken separately, each sub-group offers a different demographic picture, with a subadult
over-representation in the commingled remains. A series of nonspecific stress indicators
were documented in order to assess exposure to disease and malnutrition. Both children and
adults were found to be affected. However, trauma and fractures were observed only in the case
of women and children, with most cases presenting peri-mortem injuries.

This review begins with analyzing in what matter do genetic heritability and the environment influence adult
height and it continues with a discussion about the four known methods for calculating stature: skeleton length in the
grave, anatomical and mathematical methods, and sample specific regressions. The aim of this article is to emphasize the
necessity to correctly acknowledge all the parameters that influence adult height, and consequently the way in which it is
determined. Thus, we review the key theoretical debates and methodological advances in the estimation of stature.
diseases, being caused by a group of closely related species included in the
Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). Molecular studies targeting
tuberculosis affected human remains are important in order to understand the
evolution of specific genomic sites related to virulence. The aim of this review is to
describe several techniques that are useful for the confirmation of pathogen
persistence in the human archaeological remains. It also presents the genomic loci
investigated in the field of molecular bioarchaeology for discrimination of MTBC

osteology, paleopathology, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Furthermore, due to the doubtful relative dating for this
sample, we performed C14 dating. Besides the determination of standard biological attributes like the sex
determination and age-at-death for each individual, further analysis revealed the presence of pathological
changes on the skeletons belonging to two females. For the differential diagnosis carried over these lesions
(eburnation, severe marginal lipping and osteophytes of great dimensions, ankylosis of vertebral bodies,
kyphosis, intervertebral disc disease) we took into consideration osteoarthritis, spinal ankylosis, erosive
osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesisand infectious disease possibly tuberculosis. The latter possible diagnostic was
additionally explored using infrared spectroscopy. Although the sample is too small for inferring conclusions
at a populational level, the paleopathological results offer important data regarding the population inhabiting
the Subcarpathic area in the Neolithic, Early Migrations, and Medieval periods.
