Every product roadmap this year seems to have an AI feature pencilled in somewhere. The harder question is whether it belongs on the device or in the cloud, and getting that wrong is expensive to unpick once development is underway. Three things tend to decide it: 1) How reliable the connection is where the product actually lives 2) Whether the data it handles is allowed to leave the device at all 3) How fast the response needs to be Score highly on any one of those and cloud AI stops being a safe default. Worth knowing before any engineering time gets committed: edge AI has no business inside a safety-critical control loop. It earns its keep on monitoring and alerting running alongside one, not on anything that has to behave identically every single time. 🔋 ❌ 700 million batteries are thrown away in the UK every year, with 4 billion across Europe. A lot of those exist because an IIoT sensor needed replacing. This problem only gets even worse at scale - More sensors, more maintenance schedules, more site visits to locations that were never designed for easy access. What worse is, the labour and downtime costs often dwarf the cost of the sensor itself. Energy harvesting takes batteries out of the equation entirely. A properly designed self-powered device runs on ambient vibration, heat, light or RF - with no replacements needed for 5-10+ years. Data from real deployments presents 87-96% reduction in electronic waste over the device lifetime, and 70% fewer lifetime carbon emissions compared to battery-powered equivalents. And it’s increasingly a compliance matter as well. EU Ecodesign regulation 2026/763 now requires new industrial wireless sensors to either use energy harvesting or demonstrate a 10-year battery life with recyclable chemistry.
