This is a significant moment for us because it recognises the hard work and dedication of our fantastic team, and the long-term approach we have taken to managing the land across the estate. Farming sits at the heart of what we do. Across 2,000 acres, we are working to build greater resilience through regenerative practices, investment in nature, and a bold ambition to reach net zero by 2030. Alongside this, our work with schoolchildren through New Leaf Learning, and the local community through events, charitable support, and our recent partnership with the West Northamptonshire Good Food Plan, is helping us connect people with food, farming, and the land in a more meaningful way. As our managing partner, Johnny Wake DL FRASE ARAgS says: “We are only custodians. Our job is to leave Courteenhall Estate in a better place for the next generations.” “This isn’t just any award to us, it carries huge credibility and exclusivity. We didn’t remotely take for granted that we’d get it.” We are not the finished article, and there is still a huge amount of work to do. This week Claudia Allan from Courteenhall joined farm retail businesses from across the UK for the Farm Retail Association Conference. Day 1, Claudia joined the tour hosted by Heather and Rob at Farmer Copleys for a hugely inspiring day and deep dive into their fabulous business; Day 2 was equally inspiring, with fabulous talks from the FRA patron, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall; a truthful reality check from economist Tim Leunig; alongside a range of other deep dives into areas such as customer loyalty, visual merchandising, and the importance of putting people at the heart of our organisations, despite the rising cost challenges. As we prepare to break ground this spring on our own farm shop, The Knot at Courteenhall, it was certainly a valuable opportunity to listen, learn, and connect with the many passionate people working across the sector. It’s a privilege to be part of such a passionate community, strengthening the connection between people, their communities, and to celebrate together at the 2026 Farm Retail Association Awards evening last night. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists. A huge thank you to all the team at the Farm Retail Association for organising such a fantastic event. We had such a great day at our Historic Houses Business Conference yesterday – huge thanks to all who attended and made it such a success. We were considering the Futureproofing of Historic Houses and Estates, given the various challenges they face, whether short-term or long-term. Themes that emerged throughout the day for me were: · The essential importance of planning for the long-term. Decisions now could have repercussions in the future, so need to be made carefully as well as bravely. · Following on, it is therefore essential to gather as much evidence and data as possible, whether on the assets themselves, on your customers’ needs, or on commercial viability. · Houses do so much for their wider communities, so find a way of capturing this so that you can win over the support when you need it, such as from your local planning officers. · Work out a long-term strategy that is financially viable, while also letting you invest in the heritage for long-term benefit. Or, as pithily summarised in Charlie Courtenay's end of day keynote, "know what you own and pass it on with consciousness" – a Jungian approach to heritage. Our day was greatly enlivened by case studies from Hedingham Castle, The CLA, Courteenhall Estate, ADAM Architecture, Alastair Martin, Chawton House, Penshurst Place, Wordsworth Grasmere, Braxted Park Estate and Powderham. We also benefited from a masterclass in the current fiscal and legal context, from Elizabeth Hartless (Saffery) and Sarah Wray TEP (Charles Russell Speechlys). Thanks to all our brilliant speakers for such a truly inspiring day.

Big thanks to the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association for having me to speak at their Norfolk Farming Conference. We don't have anything quite of this scale in Northamptonshire! I was really inspired by the talks I got to see. And met a bunch of dynamic and energetic people. Themes that came out for me: - farmer collaboration can be and needs to be improved. - we all want to have diversified income streams and not be reliant on DEFRA or other handouts. - there are lots of opportunities out there, but you have to do and chase them down.
