“Football helped me rebuild my life in the UK” After fleeing Ukraine, football helped Liubov Liushnenko find friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging. Today, she’s helping other refugees and asylum-seekers find the same through the power of sport. As the world comes together for the World Cup, her story is a reminder that football is more than a game. It’s community, confidence and hope. More than 500 people are feared to have been aboard two boats that reportedly capsized off the coast of Myanmar. The vessels were carrying mostly Rohingya passengers. While the incidents have not yet been officially confirmed, the potential loss of life is devastating. These reports are a stark reminder that too many people are still forced to risk deadly sea journeys because they have nowhere safe to turn. Escalating conflict in Myanmar and limited opportunities for refugees continue to drive desperate decisions. Lives can still be saved through stronger search and rescue efforts, access to asylum and protection, action against smuggling and trafficking networks and sustained support for Rohingya refugees and the communities hosting them. No one should have to risk their life at sea to find safety.

Public support for refugees remains stable after 75 years of Convention protection. For almost a decade, Ipsos has tracked global attitudes towards refugees, providing one of the most comprehensive pictures of how public opinion has evolved over time. Their latest survey, conducted with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, shows that support for people forced to flee remains strong. Key findings include: 👉 Two-thirds (66%) of people across 29 countries agree that people fleeing war or persecution should be able to seek refuge in another country. In Great Britain, that rises to 73%. 👉 Support for refugee protection and concerns about asylum systems often coexist. Many people support offering safety while also wanting confidence that systems are fair and effective. 👉 There is no single global view on refugees. Attitudes are shaped by national experiences, local realities, media coverage and political debate. As we mark 75 years of the Refugee Convention this year, the research highlights an important truth: global public attitudes towards refugee protection are often more complex than they first appear. We need listening and dialogue, efficient and fair systems in line with humanitarian law, and international support for refugees who remain displaced around the world, as well as the countries that host them.
