Anders Krohn a partagé ceciI was extremely nervous to move away from founder-led sales. For the first two years of Kernel, I led every deal, acting as both the CEO and the only salesperson. This approach took us all the way from pre-seed to Series A, and we closed some amazing deals along the way. However, it was totally unscalable. My calendar was the primary blocker to Kernel growing faster. Last summer, we made the call to invest in our first account executives, a big decision for any startup. History is filled with companies that couldn’t make their first sales hires successful. Like them, we had no evidence that anyone would want to buy from anyone other than the founder, but we had to make it work. Will Metcalfe was the first external closer we hired, and his impact was immediate. In less than a year, he’s - Closed numerous six-figure deals - Exceeded his ambitious quota by 50% - Allowed me to go from spending 80% of my time on new deals to under 5% - Given us the confidence to promote four other salespeople to AE Moving away from founder-led sales is hard, but it’s much easier when you have people as great as Will on the team.

Anders Krohn a partagé ceci"Who is this? Who is paying us money?" Questions that Alexander DeMoulin, Director of Revenue Operations at Fin, and the rest of the team dealt with daily. When you grow as fast as they have, your CRM bloats quickly. Inbound leads, marketing lists, and sales-sourced accounts pile in from every direction. The same company can end up in the CRM three times under three different names, none of which match the legal entity on the invoice. So when finance asks "who actually paid us?", the honest answer is often "we're not 100% sure". Alexander and I spent 30 minutes discussing how Fin cracked it and why accurate data is the foundation for successful building in the AI era. Full recording in the comments.

Anders Krohn a publié ceciWe've just closed out the best quarter in Kernel history, our third straight record-breaker. We added some truly great customers, such as Fin, Ironclad, and Legora, with plenty more to announce in the coming weeks. Just as importantly, so many of our existing customers, like Gong and AlphaSense, chose to double down on Kernel. Why has this happened? For RevOps teams at the best companies on the planet, data quality has never mattered more. They come to Kernel because we guarantee that it will be accurate. I couldn't be more grateful for the team we have here. None of this happens without their dedication to making both Kernel and our customers successful. Time to make it four in a row!

Anders Krohn a partagé ceciIronclad's AI GTM motion now runs on Kernel. Ironclad's GTM Systems team is at the frontier of their industry. They’re taking on an ambitious project, building a data foundation accurate enough to power agentic AI solutions at scale. That’s much harder than it sounds, and they know it’s required for success. So, they conducted a scientific comparison of vendors and chose Kernel to guarantee the accuracy levels they need. Mike Lauritzen, Derek Weiser, Sarah Katinger, and the rest of the Ironclad Systems team, it's been a genuine pleasure working with you. Excited to see what you build this year.

Anders Krohn a partagé ceciPeople often blame AI for bad outbound results. They should blame their data instead. A lot of the cold emails I receive are actually quite good, except that they’re sent to the CEO of the wrong company. Bryan Johnson is the founder of another company called Kernel. Their domain is kernel.com. Here is an email intended for Ryan Field, the current CEO. I receive emails like this nearly every day. This is most likely because many CRMs have account-level foundational data that contradicts itself. i.e., the combination of the account name, LinkedIn, and domain does not match a real entity. AI doesn’t understand the conflict, so your system sends outbound to the wrong people, which gives you both bad results and a quick add to a domain blacklist for spam. Garbage in, garbage out. This is why the first step for all our customers at Kernel is entity resolution, where we clean up the foundational data for each entity in the CRM or system of record, assign it a unique KERN ID, and then enrich with further data on top of a structured base.

Anders Krohn a aimé ceciAnders Krohn a aimé ceciIs your RevOps function built to operate the revenue engine—or help design what comes next? I’ve been talking with a few fellow RevOps leaders lately, and we keep coming back to the same thing: The job is changing. Again. RevOps itself was an evolution of Sales Operations. As the revenue lifecycle became more connected, the mandate expanded beyond supporting Sales to connecting Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, Finance, data, and technology. Now the expectations are evolving again. CEOs, CROs, CFOs, boards, and investors are asking for more than operational efficiency. They want: Predictable revenue. Predictable growth. And that requires more than operating the revenue engine well. It requires GTM strategy. It requires systems thinking. It requires the ability to see around one corner—and then the next. To understand how a decision in one part of the revenue system creates a domino effect across everything downstream: Pipeline affects bookings. Bookings affect capacity. Capacity affects activation. Activation affects adoption. Adoption affects retention and expansion. And all of it eventually shows up in revenue. That’s why the next evolution of RevOps is already bringing a much stronger emphasis on: GTM Strategy + GTM Systems Optimization. Not as a replacement for RevOps. As an expansion of what the most strategic RevOps leaders are already becoming. Leaders who can connect strategy, process, people, data, and technology across the entire revenue lifecycle—and continuously optimize how the system performs. RevOps evolved once because the business needed more than Sales Operations. It is evolving again because stakeholders need more than operational efficiency. They need predictability. The question for CEOs and CROs is simple: Can your current RevOps capabilities operate the revenue engine? Can they also help design and optimize what comes next? Do you have both?

Anders Krohn a aimé ceciAnders Krohn a aimé ceciI've been seeing more and more posts about the importance of disqualifying early, and while I agree in principle, in practice that mentality can do a lot of damage if it's internalised without proper logic. See, once a rep or an AE gets a few wins under their belt, they start to get a "feel" for what makes a good prospect, and what makes a bad one. So they switch on auto pilot, every call is fishing for a good prospect, and the second they meet any friction, they look for an excuse to exit the conversation under the excuse of "disqualifying early". Problem there is that friction is good! Friction is where you can generate real buy in and care for the issue, and constantly looking for an off ramp in every conversation means you're missing out on those prospects who truly matter for the deal because they didn't "feel" right in the first 30 seconds. And worst case scenario, you get a good referral or a fun conversation in the middle of a long day. Disqualify early sure, but don't use that as an excuse to look for off ramps

Anders Krohn a aimé ceciAnders Krohn a aimé ceciOver the past two weeks, I'm sure everyone's realised that their coworkers have missed out on a career in football punditry. As an Irish man with no representation at this World Cup, I've had to cling to whatever I can find. Enter Roberto "Pico" Lopes, Cape Verde's captain, born and reared in Dublin. Unbelievably, this all started with cold LinkedIn outbound. Cape Verde's head coach, Rui Águas, prospected him and reached out. Roberto's first reaction was "this is spam." But the coach followed up (like every good sales person), Roberto took the meeting, and the rest is history. As captain, he went up against both finalists and didn't lose in 90 minutes. Harry Kane unfortunately can't say the same 👀 Moral of the story: cold outbound isn't dead, and following up actually works. For everyone else... maybe reply to your messages. You will end up at a World Cup.

Venture debt or equity? For a scaleup or growth-stage technology company, it is not unusual to reach a point where additional capital is needed to support the next phase of growth. Founders must then decide whether raising capital makes sense again and, if so, what type of capital is best suited to the company’s needs. Venture debt is often described as non-dilutive. That is not entirely true. Equity is sometimes seen as cheaper because it has no repayment clock. That can be equally misleading. Determining which option works best requires understanding the fully loaded cost of each, how the company would perform under a downside scenario, and what the resulting capital structure could mean in a future transaction or exit. In our latest L40º Insight, Juan Ignacio García Braschi unpacks this venture debt versus equity dilemma and explains how founders should evaluate both options with their growth path and eventual exit in view.
