Andrew Bolton shared thisAre we turning a corner in the UK recruitment market? 🤔 There have been some interesting signals over the past week which, when you join the dots, paint a more encouraging picture than we've been used to recently. 📈 CV-Library reported that job adverts increased by 21% in June compared with May. 📊 The latest KPMG/REC Report on Jobs showed temporary billings at their highest level for almost three years, although permanent recruitment remains under pressure. 📢 Then came the latest trading updates from some listed recruiters. PageGroup's update came in ahead of expectations, with investors encouraged by signs that trading conditions may be stabilising. Robert Walters has also seen its share price recover strongly, rising around 15% over the past week, while investor sentiment towards other UK-listed recruitment companies appears to be improving. So, are investors starting to regain faith in the UK and global recruitment sector? The stock market is always forward looking. If investors believe the worst is behind us, could this be an early indication that brighter times are ahead for recruitment businesses? It certainly feels as though employers are becoming more active again. They're advertising more roles, the temporary market is strengthening, and whilst permanent hiring remains depressed, the direction of travel appears more positive. We're not back to the glory years yet, and there are obviously still challenges, but after what has been a torrid few years, there are finally some reasons to be optimistic. Andrew Bolton shared thisWhilst many do, not every experienced interim recruiter wants to inherit a desk. Some want to build something — and get exceptionally well rewarded for doing it. I'm working with a well-established executive search firm with a strong reputation in the private equity market. They're looking for someone at Director or Partner level to join a new interim practice — focused on C-suite and C-1, business, digital and technology change and transformation leaders across PE-backed businesses. This isn't a "here's a desk, here's a phone, good luck" situation. The platform behind it is already working: deep PE relationships, a flourishing search practice, real market credibility, and colleagues already embedded with PE clients and their portfolio businesses. You'd be building something new with serious infrastructure behind you. They know what it takes to attract someone exceptional and they're prepared to pay for it. Total compensation is structured at 45-60% of billings, a guarantee is on the table, and there's genuine equity potential for the right person. The package will be built around the individual — this is a Director or Partner level hire and the earnings reflect that. It won't be right for everyone. Headhunter: Well, it's a high-profile role. £167k salary, rather swanky accommodation, staff, chauffeur-driven cars, international travel and a very generous pension. Candidate: Sounds interesting. I'm looking for something with a bit of stability though. What's the tenure been like? Headhunter: Ah. Well, six people have had the position over the last ten years. Candidate: Six? So the average tenure is less than two years? Headhunter: Roughly. It has varied. Candidate: What happened to the last one? Headhunter: Resigned under pressure. Candidate: And the one before that? Headhunter: Terminated. Candidate: Right... Headhunter: And to be transparent, one of them was actually outlasted by a lettuce. Candidate: A lettuce? Headhunter: A lettuce. Andrew Bolton shared thisThe first thing I ask a recruiter when they come to me isn't about their billings. It's not about notice periods or what they're earning now. It's much simpler than that: "do you actually know what you want to do next?" You'd be surprised how often the answer is along the lines of "not really." And that's fine. Most people who call me or who I approach aren't in crisis. They're just at that point where something feels a bit off — the business has changed, the buzz has gone, the comms structure has been played with, or they're just quietly wondering whether something better exists somewhere else. The problem is that if you don't know what you actually want, you can end up making a move that looks good on paper but feels very samey six months in. So before we ever talk about specific roles or firms, I try to help people get clear on what they're really looking for. What kind of desk do they want to own? What does a good manager actually look like for them? What does their career look like in three years if everything goes well? Sometimes that conversation leads to a move. Sometimes it leads to a much clearer picture of what needs to change where they already are. Either way, most people find it useful just to talk it through with someone who has no agenda other than helping them make the right decision. That's what I've been doing for over over 30 years.
