Aurelien Mottier shared thisMost leaders reward their best people with cash... I drove mine around the Alps and made their breakfast. 😅 The idea wasn't even mine. At our kick-off last year, a few of the team cornered me and asked if I'd put a skiing incentive in place. If they hit an ambitious target, would I take them to my place in France? I liked the idea, so I set a target that I genuinely thought was out of reach. Not just a stretch target... one I didn't expect anyone to achieve. Four people did. Three of our top salespeople and one of our Managing Directors. So a few months later, we headed to my family house in the French Alps for four days together. I made a point of looking after everyone. Driving them to the slopes, making breakfast every morning and generally playing butler for the weekend. They'd worked incredibly hard for me all year. For four days, I wanted to work for them. The thing I came away with wasn't how much everyone enjoyed the skiing. It was how much stronger the relationships became. Bonuses matter. Everyone likes being rewarded. But money usually disappears into the mortgage, a holiday or something else. Four days living under the same roof, sharing meals, laughing together and getting to know each other away from work creates something completely different. At the end of the day, we're social creatures. We all want to feel recognised, valued and part of something. Experiences like that stay with people long after the bonus has been spent. The best part? I came home realising my top performers weren't just exceptional at their jobs. They were genuinely lovely people. And they know they'll always be welcome back. Not because they hit a number, but because they're friends.

Aurelien Mottier shared thisI sometimes wonder if we've optimised BDRs and SDRs for the wrong outcome. We celebrate activity. We reward meetings and early-stage opportunities. We build dashboards that track calls, emails, meetings and pipeline down to the last decimal point. But buyers don't remember how many times you contacted them or how many meetings they had with you. They remember whether they trusted you. Some of the best sales conversations I've had didn't lead to a meeting that week. In some cases, they didn't become opportunities for months. What they did create was trust. Those conversations started with curiosity, not a pitch. They were about understanding what was happening in the customer's world, the pressures they were under and whether we could genuinely help. Sometimes the answer was, "Not yet." Ironically, that's often what opened the door later, when the timing was right and a genuine business need emerged. The challenge is that many sales organisations unintentionally reward the opposite behaviour. When success is measured almost entirely by meetings booked or pipeline created before month-end, the metric becomes the objective instead of the customer. I've often wondered what would happen if we measured SDRs a little differently. Not just by the number of meetings they booked, but by the quality of the conversations they created. Did they build trust? Did they leave the customer with a different perspective? Did the prospect finish the call feeling understood rather than sold to? Maybe we'd book fewer meetings this month. Maybe we'd create fewer opportunities that immediately show up on the dashboard. But I'd be surprised if we didn't build better pipeline over the long term - and create opportunities that closed faster because the relationship was already there. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dan Daly at LinkedIn, and we discussed exactly this. The full interview will be out soon, and I'd be interested to hear whether others think we've become too focused on optimising the metrics rather than the customer.

Aurelien Mottier shared thisRemote work can build experienced sales teams. I'm far less convinced it builds great salespeople. If all you're doing is hiring experienced Account Executives with 15 or 20 years behind them and a well-established network, they'll probably do just fine working from home. But that's not the business we're in. We're in the business of developing people, and that's much harder to do remotely. One of the biggest advantages of an office has nothing to do with scheduled meetings. It's what I call the "office radio". You're sitting at your desk, getting on with your work, while around you someone in Finance is chasing an overdue invoice, a colleague is handling a difficult objection, an SDR is asking for advice, and a manager is coaching someone through a live call. None of those conversations are directed at you, but your brain is listening anyway. You absorb ideas, language and judgement without even realising it. That's how I have leant. One coaching conversation helps one rep directly, but everyone within earshot picks something up. You simply can't recreate that from a Teams or Zoom call. The same is true away from the desk. Waiting for a coffee. Walking back from a meeting. Catching someone for five minutes after a call. Those moments are where colleagues become teammates, and teammates build trust. I'm not against remote work. Quite the opposite. If you've consistently performed and proven yourself, you've earned the flexibility to work wherever you're most effective. But if your goal is to develop the next generation of salespeople, don't underestimate the value of putting them in the same room. Because the best lessons are often the ones nobody planned to teach...

Aurelien Mottier shared thisThe best business conversations do not always happen across a boardroom table. They happen when people stop selling and start talking 😅 That's exactly what stood out to me at Wimbledon last week as a guest of the LinkedIn team. Yes, the tennis was exceptional. 🎾 Yes, the hospitality was first class. 🥂 But what impressed me most was how thoughtfully LinkedIn brought together people who genuinely wanted to connect. No hard pitches, no forced networking. Just great conversations, new relationships and the kind of discussions that are difficult to create in a traditional business setting. It was also a privilege to watch Jannik Sinner, Barbora Krejcikova and Novak Djokovic all progress to the third round on Centre Court. A huge thank you to the LinkedIn team for the invitation and for putting together such a memorable day. A great reminder that the strongest business relationships often start long before there's any business to discuss. Huge thanks to: Emma Culhane - for keeping us hydrated all day long 🍸 Sinéad Smith - for always being great at helping people connecting Salwa Amar سلوى عمار - loved the tips on how to get the most out of Co-pilot. Let the best team win on Thursday 🤗 Thibaud Savouré - Looking forward to doing Mont Blanc together 🗻 Arron Dowdall - best account manager we could wish for ! Francois Trouvat - for gifting us a Wimbledon hat 🧢 #Wimbledon #LinkedIn #Networking

Aurelien Mottier posted thisThe best businesses aren't built on products; they're built on people. That's why we're expanding the team at memoryBlue. Currently, we are hiring for the following positions: - RevOps Manager - US based Sales Account Executives - US based SDRs With over 20 years in sales, I've learned that the biggest impact on your career comes from the people you learn from. This is one of the reasons I've enjoyed my time at memoryBlue so much. We have good people, a culture that genuinely invests in its team, and plenty of opportunities for growth. If you're seeking your next challenge or know someone who is, I would love to hear from you.

Aurelien Mottier posted thisThe fastest deals I've ever closed involved very little selling. Our deals are often measured in weeks, and people frequently ask why. It boils down to two key factors. First, we sell pipeline and revenue. When companies approach memoryBlue, they are rarely just shopping around. They have often missed a quarter, the board is asking questions, and the CRO needs answers. They needed more pipeline yesterday! When the problem is that urgent, nobody wants a six-month evaluation process; they want to move fast. Second, and perhaps more crucial for velocity, is reputation. The buyer typically knows someone on our team, trusts the people, our processes, and our brand. The conversation quickly shifts to, "How do we get started?" You can't build that trust with a better website, an attractive pay-per-performance model, or flashy marketing that claims you are better than your competitors. Trust is built by consistently doing right by people, time and time again. Trust doesn't start when an opportunity is created; it begins years before. It starts when you help someone who doesn't have the budget or when you reach out to someone in transition between roles, trying to assist them. This often becomes the biggest reason deals move quickly.

Aurelien Mottier shared thisEveryone is looking for the next outbound hack, the next AI tool, or the next growth play. But after 20+ years in sales, I've come to a pretty boring conclusion: The fundamentals still win. Every time. In a recent conversation with the team at Squeeze, we discussed what actually drives outbound success. It comes down to three things: 1. Data The best messaging in the world won't save bad targeting. If you're talking to the wrong people, you're not doing outbound. You're just creating noise. 2. Messaging Most companies lead with what they do. Prospects care about what they're dealing with: Their challenges, their priorities and the problem that's costing them money, time, or sleep. Start there. 3. Nurturing This is where most teams leave money on the table. Only a small percentage of prospects are ready to buy today. That doesn't mean the rest are bad leads. It means their timing isn't right. Yet. The companies that win are the ones that stay visible long enough to be there when the compelling event arrives. Technology changes. Channels change. Buyer behaviour changes. But these three things haven't changed in decades. And I suspect they won't change in the next decade either. What would you add as the fourth pillar, if there was one?Aurelien Mottier shared thisGreat sales still comes down to the fundamentals. Good data. Strong messaging. Clear understanding of the customer’s pain. Aurelien Mottier breaks down why those pillars matter in both inbound and outbound motions. Inbound buyers often arrive more educated than ever, ready to talk details, pricing, and fit. Outbound is different. It has to start with context, relevance, and a clear hypothesis around the problem the customer is facing. The best teams know how to translate their value into the customer’s pain point. Are you leading with your product, or with the problem your customer actually cares about? Aurelien Mottier shared thisEveryone is talking about AI replacing sales. I think that's the wrong conversation. For simple purchases, buyers increasingly want a self-service experience. So do I. But when the decision is complex, expensive, and involves multiple stakeholders, something interesting happens: - People still want people. - Not because they need information. - Because they need context.. and trust. They need someone to challenge assumptions, navigate internal politics, manage risk, and help build consensus. AI is transforming sales. We use it every day at memoryBlue. But in enterprise sales, trust remains a human outcome. I recently shared my thoughts with The Revenue Wire on why human interaction still matters in complex B2B buying decisions, and where I believe AI will augment rather than replace sales professionals. I'd be interested to hear your perspective: What part of the enterprise sales process do you think will always require a human? Article in the comments.

The buyer changes. The message shifts. The hiring decisions matter earlier than expected. The playbook that worked in one market does not always travel neatly into the next. On Wednesday, June 24, we’re bringing together three members of the #Herd to talk honestly about what international growth looked like behind the scenes, including what worked, what stalled, and what they’d do differently. Aurelien took myself, Ethan Chase, Ryan Briggs, and Julia Fitzgerald to his home in the French Alps earlier this year to recognize our accomplishments. We skied hard, ate like kings, and spent a lot of quality time together in the sauna talking business and life. What a time!
