Don’t be afraid to fail. We want to see what’s working and double down on that.’ It’s rare and so refreshing to have that kind of free rein from Day 1. I'm trying something new on here... Whilst equity in funding isn't (and shouldn't be) distilled into a check-list, I've found it helpful to consider it in a series of funding design check-points: from how calls are structured, to how applications are reviewed, to how learning and accountability are built in. Here's my first attempt at a practical and (hopefully) useful tool for funders and programme teams who want to embed equity more deliberately into funding processes. It's not supposed to give you answers, it's supposed to help you pause and be more thoughtful in the choices you do make along the way. NB: I've deliberately not included anything on diversity of committees here - I find this a knotty subject where there are clear benefits but it can easily be used to justify inequitable decisions, or place the burden of 'representation' onto one person.
