David Amodio shared thisThe most dangerous phrase in business isn't "I've got a feeling..." It's "The data says..." 💡 Because too often, nobody asks which data, from where, and compared to what. Statistics are brilliant servants but crap masters. Presented without context, they're capable of proving almost anything and enlightening almost nothing. The AV market is a great example. Depending on which chart you choose, you'd be forgiven for thinking TV has been quietly escorted out of the room by social video, and the PSBs shoved out by the streamers. Yet the impartial industry data tells a very different story: TV advertising still accounts for c85% of all ad-supported AV viewing in the UK. Pause and think about that for a moment. And 1634s still spend more time with TV advertising than advertising on YouTube and TikTok combined. Can't be true, right? The trick is not to confuse video viewing with advertising viewing. The reason isn't complicated. TV was built for advertising. Not as an interruption. Not as an afterthought. Not bolted on later. Advertising is woven into the viewing experience in a way that feels natural, expected and accepted. And guess what? Consumers don't just trust TV more than any other media channel (according to the latest Credos research). They actually quite like the ads. They talk about them, share them and remember them. That's a big part of why TV advertising continues to deliver such strong results. The following article is a timely reminder that being data-driven doesn't mean being data-blind. The figures, from January to May 2026, show viewers choosing Channel 4 as a destination for high quality, compelling drama, with shows that take risks, back unheard voices and explore fresh perspectives. Standout successes include: ✨A Woman of Substance - delivering an average audience of 3 million viewers across all screens in the first 28 days, and a year-to-date individual reach of 7.3m - becoming our most watched drama on streaming in five years. ✨Tip Toe - achieving 2.2 million in its first seven days across linear and streaming, with a year-to-date individual reach of 5.8m. ✨Patience Series 2 - landing an average of 3.9 million viewers in the first 28 days, and reaching 8.1m individuals this year to date. ✨Falling – kicking off with a strong launch of 1.7 million in just seven days for its opening episode. ✨Dirty Business - reaching 4.2 million viewers across all viewing, becoming Channel 4’s biggest factual drama launch on streaming in five years. David Amodio shared thisYesterday represented seminal moment for SME advertising and broadcasters. Channel 4, Sky and ITV joined forces and officially opened our doors to SME businesses across the UK. From today they are now able to access the power of TV on a self serve basis through Comcast's Universal Ads. According to Probability 2, a study by Ebiquity plc, WPP and Gain Theory which looked ROI driven across +£1.8bn of media investment, TV delivered 55% of of all profitability, yet only received 44% of budgets. While impressive, that only tells a fraction of the story due to the majority of the data coming from larger business. For SMEs the lion share of ad investment is spent on less profitable media channels (social, search, digital display etc), meaning until now failed to capatlise on the most effective media channel. Understandably they have prioritised ease of access over optimal effectiveness due the barrier of entry to TV. That changed yesterday. Today sees the UK launch of Universal Ads — a new self-service advertising platform from Comcast in partnership with ITV, Sky, Channel 4 and Universal Ads. It allows small and medium-sized businesses to run campaigns across all three broadcasters from one place, with the platform enabling advertisers to go live in minutes. This is an important moment for our industry. By simplifying how TV is bought, we can make it easier for SMEs to access premium media, and bring new brands and categories into TV, and help ensure premium TV remains innovative and competitive alongside global social and digital platforms. After almost ten years at Amazon, I decided to take a break to travel, which took me to some incredible places and gave me time to think carefully about what I wanted from my next role. It meant being patient and waiting for something that genuinely felt like the right fit. I started that new chapter as Director of Retail Media at B&Q yesterday. One thing that really stood out throughout the interview process was the people. Every conversation left me thinking I'd genuinely like to work with these people and that's not something I say lightly. After my first day, I'm happy to say that first impression was absolutely right. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, generous with their time, and keen to help me settle in. I'm looking forward to getting to know the business, learning from the team, and helping grow B&Q's Retail Media proposition as part of the wider Kingfisher group. Here's to new colleagues, new challenges, and being back in London.
