Lee Hudson shared thisThe defining challenge of the energy transition is shifting from ambition to execution. Capital is being deployed at scale across grid modernisation, HVDC, offshore wind, interconnectors, data centres and wider mission critical infrastructure. The demand case is clear. The technology is advancing. The project pipeline is substantial. But the ability to deliver is becoming increasingly dependent on something far less scalable: experienced people. Across the sector, utilities, OEMs, EPCs, developers and contractors are competing for the same specialist capability, project directors, electrical and mechanical engineers, commissioning professionals, construction leaders, commercial specialists and technical executives with proven delivery experience. This is no longer simply a recruitment issue. It is a strategic delivery risk. When specialist capability is unavailable, projects slow down. Costs increase. Mobilisation dates slip. Existing teams become overstretched, and the risk profile of the programme changes. That is why workforce planning must now sit alongside capital planning, procurement and supply chain strategy. The most effective organisations are not waiting for vacancies to emerge. They are mapping future capability requirements, identifying critical skills gaps early, building flexible talent models and creating access to specialist networks before delivery pressure peaks. In my role as Divisional Director of Energy & Mission Critical at Mane Contract Services, I work closely with organisations facing these exact challenges. Our role is not simply to help clients hire. It is to advise them on how to build the workforce capability required to deliver complex programmes across the full project lifecycle, from design and engineering through construction, commissioning and operations. The next phase of the energy transition will favour organisations that can align three things: capital, capability and execution. Those with ambitious project pipelines but no credible workforce strategy will struggle to convert opportunity into delivery. The question for the market is no longer whether investment will continue. It is whether the industry has the leadership, technical depth and delivery capability to execute at the pace now required. For years, the focus has been on adding more solar and wind capacity. Now, the conversation is shifting towards how that energy is stored and used when it's needed most. I saw a recent article on how more homeowners across Germany are pairing rooftop solar with battery storage systems, helping to reduce their reliance on volatile fossil fuel prices while making better use of the energy they generate. It's another sign that battery storage is no longer a niche technology it's becoming a key part of Germany's energy strategy. As renewable capacity continues to grow, storage will play a crucial role in: ⚡Improving grid flexibility ⚡Reducing renewable curtailment ⚡Increasing energy independence ⚡Supporting a more reliable and resilient electricity network Germany has long been at the forefront of Europe's energy transition, and it's clear that the next chapter isn't just about generating clean energy it's about storing it, managing it and making the grid fit for the future.
