Paula Tomlinson shared thisIt's important to give credit to HM Revenue & Customs #VAT when things go well. One of the team submitted a voluntary VAT registration on 6th July and the VAT number arrived on 18th July. 👏 There was still the weird thing when the Date of Issue says 10th July, suggesting 2nd class post takes 8 days, when it doesn't. But 12 days is very welcome for the busy growing company. Thank you. 👍 Dear Andy - Businesses would love this efficiency in other departments 🤞 #onlytryingtogetthingsdone #youhelpuswehelpyou

Paula Tomlinson shared this#NewPM #NewChancellor Is it too early (or hot?) to mention Budget Predictions? Based on keeping to the manifesto (in the spirit as well as the lawyery interpretation), the previous messing up of IHT changes and the likely more left-leaning version of a new Chancellor, perhaps we're (mainly) left with CGT? Could the rate increase to match income tax rates? If you think so, and you're going through an asset sale (or making a chargeable gift) or thinking about it, perhaps speed this up so you don't trip over the next Budget... PS Dear New Chancellor. Increasing CGT rates further doesn't necessarily get you the money you expect. People can choose not to sell stuff with the added effect of reducing economic activity... Instead, please do the hard work and look at government expenditure...

Paula Tomlinson shared this#taxsimplification Interesting discussion last night with Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) Politics being what it is, especially at the moment, the main remaining realistic influence is to help HMRC administer the expanding number of taxes more efficiently. Personally I reckon if all, or at least some, MPs were required to prepare their own tax returns, tax simplification would become a priority overnight! MPs should understand the coal face impact of all tax changes.

Thank you Dan for bringing this up. HMRC's extrapolation approach is questionable. If a small business agrees an adjustment, is it really because they agree HMRC is correct or because they weigh up the time and cost of further correspondence? I think small businesses are more prone to just accepting some adjustments, because time spent finding information for HMRC is time away from running the business, unlike in larger organisations.
