Matt Perkins shared thisIt is now official - on April 5th I am stepping down as OUI's CEO after more than seven years. It has been a fantastic experience, working with world-class talent across the Oxford innovation ecosystem. I have also had the pleasure of participation in TenU with other leading University technology transfer offices. That engagement has enriched this role enormously. Huge thanks are due to Nicola Blackwood, Nigel Keen and the OUI Board members for their years of support and wise counsel. Oxford University Innovation colleagues have been a continuing source of inspiration to me. I wish Mairi Gibbs and the rest of the OUI team huge success during this interim period - I know the company is in safe hands and will continue to support the world-class University of Oxford. There has been a suggestion that I am retiring - this is not the case. I intend to concentrate on non-executive director posts and some charitable activities, including supporting Kellogg College, University of Oxford. I just won't be working full time. We've scoped a five-point plan to increase the proportion of women founders to 34% by 2025. Mairi Gibbs, Chief Operating Officer of OUI, said: "According to the consultancy Beauhurst, less than 8 per cent of UK university spinouts had all-women founding teams in 2023, while over 75 per cent were all-male. That’s a significant improvement on 2016 when all-women founded spinouts represented an alarming zero per cent, but if progress continues at this pace, it will take half a century to bridge the gap. That is why we are calling for a plan to deliver our ambition to reach 34 per cent by 2025." Huge credit to the team for the commitment, expertise, and care that goes into everything we do.Matt Perkins reacted on thisThe UK has one of the strongest university spinout ecosystems in the world and continues to punch above its weight globally, according to Deepening University–Investor Links, an independent report by Tony Hickson, Chief Business Officer at Cancer Research UK (CRUK), published this week and commissioned by Research England for UK Research and Innovation. Yet the full potential of the UK’s research base is still not being realised, and there remains a significant opportunity to drive further economic growth if the system evolves. Drawing on evidence and experience from across the ecosystem, the report highlights the need to: 🛣️ Simplify and strengthen pathways from research to impact 💰 Address persistent gaps in early-stage and specialist capital 🤝 Improve alignment between universities and investors The report makes a clear case for moving beyond fragmented interventions towards a more coordinated, whole-system approach, combining capital at the right stages with capability, cultural change and long-term partnership. Oxford Science Enterprises is cited throughout the report, reflecting the role that long-term, university-connected investment models can play in helping spinouts form and scale in the UK. We strongly support the direction set out in the report. Strengthening the interface between universities and investors, crowding in more patient and specialist capital, and backing spinouts from pre-incorporation through scale-up will be critical to ensuring the UK’s innovation ecosystem delivers on its promise. 🔗 Read the full report in the comments

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the University Challenge Seed Fund (UCSF), which has provided that crucial early backing for companies such as Caristo Diagnostics, which uses AI to detect hidden heart risks; OrganOx, which is transforming the preservation of donor organs for transplantation; and OXCCU TECH LTD, which converts carbon dioxide into sustainable fuels. UCSF-backed companies have gone on to raise nearly £3 billion in venture capital, demonstrating the power of early-stage support to turn research into companies with global impact. That vision has now been recognised with the 2025 MacRobert Award, the UK’s most prestigious prize for engineering innovation. OrganOx’s technology has helped deliver more than 6,000 transplants worldwide, giving patients a second chance and transforming how organs are preserved before surgery. Fifteen years on - and with a manufacturing base in Brandenburg - the company has signed its first major patent licence agreement with global solar manufacturer Trinasolar. That means perovskite-based solar tech, developed in an Oxford lab, is now on track to power homes and infrastructure across one of the world’s biggest energy markets. This isn’t just a milestone for Oxford PV - it’s a signal that the global solar industry is backing perovskite tandem technology as the next leap forward. It’s also a powerful reminder of the role IP plays in taking deep science to global scale. At Oxford University Innovation, we support hundreds of pioneering spinouts - and we’ve never lost sight of what’s possible when academic ideas get the right support at the right time. Integration (here interoperability) the single biggest killer of realising potential for new systems capabilities to be realised in one UK military and beyound. Thats my experience, and whether I liked it or not I developed expertise in it - still doesn't make it right. Traditionally expensive and time consuming but that effort did not add to the capability- it meant it could be used. This is often forgotten. Thus its a low win high cost(esp time)... A cost or "Integration Tax" ...we all have a view of them. So this is a welcome initiative to just get data and information moving....or as I keep pushing "think of it" as Internet of Military Things (IoMT).
