I was talking to a friend recently and was asked how I felt about the year so far with what's been going on recently and how I'm planning to take the year on. One word that popped straight into my head and I wanted to share that with you all.
We've only just got to month 3 of 2026, but I feel like we have already been through a decade worth of stuff in that time. So many lows, so many highs and so many in-betweens. So many things that directly and indirectly impact us on a daily basis. This got me thinking about one value could help us/me this year.
On one hand, we are navigating the "lows" that feels relentless: the political storms, the devastating conflicts in Iran and Venezuela, and the sobering frequency of natural disasters (including the deadly flooding in Asia and in my home country, Sri Lanka). It’s heavy, and it’s largely out of our control.
On the other hand, the "highs" are breathtaking. We are witnessing record-breaking sporting achievements, medical history being written in the fight against cancer, and the sheer velocity of AI (this is both exciting and scary) and green energy innovation.
In the face of all of this (and then some), where the world feels like it's moving at crazy speeds while simultaneous crises demand our attention, I keep coming back to one value that feels like that would help us get through all of this:
#Patience ✨ .
As most of you know, I have also started a new job at the start of the year, and moved back to London as a result of that. That also came with its own set of challenges, from adapting back to the hectic London life to learning about new ways of working at a new company to working with new people and understanding how they operate to all your usual work challenges and more. The one value that really helped me through a lot of this was patience.
Sometimes it helps to just be patient, pause for a moment, take a step back, analyse what's going on, listen to people/your colleagues/clients, think about the best way to approach, collaborate and then take action. All of this requires patience and planning.
It's not the passive patience of "waiting for things to happen," but the strategic patience required to process everything without losing our footing and then taking action with a clear plan and purpose.
In a year where there is so much going on within our personal lives, outside of personal lives and some things out of our control, patience is the only thing that allows us to control our response.
What about you all? Do you feel like patience is one value that resonates with you too this year, or is it something else?
