This competitive environment shows no signs of slowing down. Notably, electric vehicles are shining stars, with sold volumes exceeding 5,000 units for the third consecutive month. ⚡ Even as retail demand softens slightly, a pragmatic tone is emerging in the sector. Stock acquisition remains a significant challenge for retailers, some of whom are already planning for early 2026. Dynamics are shifting and all market sectors reported growth. Fleets experienced a 16.9% increase, while private consumer demand rose by 8.9%. Business registrations soared by 28.6%! Remarkably, 50.8% of new vehicles registered in September were electrified, with Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) growing by 56.4% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) making up 15.3% of deliveries. EVs and the End of Free: What the New Mileage Tax Means for Pricing Strategy The 2025 UK Budget has introduced a major shift for electric vehicles. From April 2028, a per-mile tax will apply: - Fully electric vehicles will pay 3p per mile - Plug-in hybrids will pay 1.5p per mile This is not just a transport policy. It is a clear pricing signal. One that consultants and their clients need to factor into strategic decisions now. Pricing meets policy Electric vehicles have enjoyed years of favourable tax treatment. That has created a built-in pricing advantage over petrol and diesel vehicles. Now, that advantage is being eroded. The introduction of a mileage-based tax changes the cost structure. EVs are no longer cheaper by default. Their value depends on how they are used, how often they are driven, and in what context. What this means for pricing strategy For consultants advising clients on mobility, fleet, or cost efficiency, this is a clear turning point. Clients should now: - Rebuild total cost of ownership models that factor in the new usage-based tax - Segment fleet use cases to understand which vehicle types make the most sense - Review procurement policies that assume EVs are always the cheapest option - Develop pricing scenarios based on projected tax increases and policy shifts This is a classic case of external policy affecting internal pricing decisions. Consultants must help clients stay ahead by responding proactively. This tax shift reinforces a wider truth. Sustainability needs to be priced properly. As tax breaks disappear, the commercial case for green investments must hold up on its own. EVs are still an important part of the transition, but the financial narrative is no longer automatic. It must be modelled, tested, and regularly reviewed. 🚗⚡ JLR Accelerates Its #EV Strategy! By 2026, JLR will launch six fully electric Land Rover models alongside an all-electric Jaguar lineup, aiming to achieve an “Electric First” business by 2025. A £500m EV-dedicated plant is under construction in the UK, revamping production capabilities. The Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender will each gain fully electric variants as part of the transition. 🔋 On the sustainability front, JLR is pushing initiatives such as using 75% recycled aluminum, introducing non-leather interior materials, and running all UK plants on 100% renewable energy—with a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2039. Manufacturing energy consumption per vehicle has already been cut by one-third compared to 2007. Does EV charging have a trust problem? Most drivers do not care what broke. Hardware. App. Payments. Back-end. They only care about one thing: “It did not work when I needed it.” And it is not rare. The DfT EV Driver Tracker found 49% of EV drivers say public chargepoints are difficult to use or out of service. From the hiring side, I keep seeing the same thing. A lot of the time, this is not really an electricity problem. It is a systems problem. The charger can have power and still fail at the moment that matters most: when someone tries to start a session. We worked with an EV charging business dealing with exactly that. Drivers were turning up to chargers marked “available” but the charge would not start. Not every time. Just enough to cause refunds, complaints, and loss of trust. They did not need more engineers. They needed a Platform Engineer. Someone who could follow the problem end-to-end, spot where it was breaking, improve monitoring, and make the status data more reliable.
