Andrew Raymond shared thisDo CEO’s have a responsibility to set the tone for the personal accountability of health and fitness? Much is spoken of and written about a CEO’s responsibility to set the ethos, strategy and expectations in a business. This, they ultimately do through authority. However, is it also incumbent on them to utilise their profile and influence in their business to take a lead in setting the tone for how their employees approach health and fitness? A healthy worker is a happy / productive worker - yes? Time was when the phrase ‘fat cat boss’ did accurately describe many (yes, not all – I know) of our well-fed, under-exercised business leaders. But not so much now. The expectation has very much shifted to the clean-living exemplar being at the head of a business. Many successful leaders wax lyrical about their demanding fitness regimes, early starts and participation in fitness events. Roland Busch – CEO of Siemens and advocate of a three x a week workout routine stated in a recent article on the FT on this very topic: “I see a direct link between my physical fitness and my professional performance. The discipline and energy I gain from my workouts are crucial for managing a demanding schedule,” You could argue that: if the Chief Exec can take fitness seriously (as it absolutely should be) with their demanding, ‘always-on’ roles, what excuse do the rest of us have? Now, just to balance that out a bit – many CEO’s will enjoy some privilege in having very high-quality personal and administrative resource, along with more authority than many in deciding how to use their time (most of us can’t just stand up at our desks mid-morning and announce ‘right, I’m off to the gym’ after all) that will take a little of the onerous housekeeping out of staying fit. They might also have a top-level coach to ensure the effectiveness of what time they have is maximised. Many businesses do promote health and wellbeing as a part of their employee care strategy. It’s important that it is truly supported and fully stitched into the ethos of the business, and not just a politically motivated gesture. CEO’s can certainly play a part in ensuring that.

Andrew Raymond shared thisCan you survive and thrive on your efforts and energy? In seeking a Business Development Director for a smaller, but highly innovative and capable automation provider - the MD told me ‘I don’t want to see anyone from ‘XXXX’ or ‘XXXXX XXX’ (insert the names of a couple of corporate monoliths there). Naturally I asked ‘why?’. Essentially because they are used to having the big name behind them and that being enough to get them through the door in many instances. They wanted someone who could overcome the ‘where did you say you’re from?’ objection and win share of mind through capability and functionality. I’ve slightly oversimplified the tale, but the point has stuck with me. Having also supported many technology start-up businesses over the years, I have used a similar philosophy when seeking commercial professionals in that space. You’ve seen the type yourselves, cheerfully manning the smaller stands at the trade shows (rather them than me) and having to do the graft all day, every day to garner interest in their wares. Not precious, not proud but know the hard miles and prepared to walk them. I have developed a highly effective competency framework to filter the precious from the productive based upon these experiences. Andrew Raymond shared thisEven after 25 years, a bit of feedback like this that a seasoned, respected and successful international business leader sent me this morning – has really made my day. Appreciation from those you admire is heartening. There’s a proper, professional and courteous way of doing things and conducting yourself. It is expected and appropriate that you try and pre-close, cover off objections, consider a backup, amplify concerns, consider a contingency plan, press for prompt responses and outcomes, ask difficult and searching questions. It’s the right thing to do. What isn’t right is the steam-rollering, conning, cajoling, creating artificial urgency, brow-beating and just downright dishonesty that far far too many candidates and clients tell me that they have been subject to.

Andrew Raymond shared thisWonderment is the Lifeblood of Curiosity I’m pretty sure that to be an Engineer, is to be curious. Not just about the subject of Engineering, but about the functionality and interaction of many things, systems and processes. It is something I have observed in the many fascinating conversations I have had with the technology leadership community. Engineers often have a seemingly endless interest and enthusiasm in any and all elements of the world, and everything in it. They frequently have detailed and absorbing interests outside of work - Mechanically biased Engineers learning how to code. Software Engineers renovating an old car and so on. The ability to absorb a series of first principles and apply them in practical and relatable ways to an array of real-world scenarios is a common characteristic, as is the energy to indulge this interest when many would prefer to stick the TV on and / or doomscroll on their phone when the working day is done. Andrew Raymond shared thisThe Compounding Effect of Habits We’ve probably all had that uber ‘motivated’, intense, loud and demonstrative colleague (maybe it’s you?). It has never been me. As a committed and proud introvert (don’t tell anyone), I’m naturally bit suspicious of the ‘noise, but no substance’ approach. After all, let’s not confuse intensity with productivity, and let’s not mix up volume with intellect. It doesn’t feel like it is so much the norm now, and I speak to more than enough seasoned professionals who often berate this nonsense from the past as painful, and even childish. I’m sure there’s a healthy dose of confirmation bias in there, but I tend to agree. I’m not being down on enthusiasm, energy or commitment here. I’m not a big fan of ‘passion’ and ‘motivation’ being bandied around as they are fleeting emotions, about as dependable as a long-range weather forecast and certainly not things to build a work ethic around. I’m big into my endurance pastimes and there isn’t a credible coach or top-class performer out there with anything positive to say about passion or motivation. They only ever speak of process, consistency and commitment. Habits, not Emotions produce results. This is quote is from Stoic Teachings on ‘The Compounding Effect of Habits’. ‘Over time, consistent daily actions compound, allowing you to build momentum. This makes daunting long-term goals feel like a natural, continuous process rather than a constant, forced struggle’.

You can apply that principle to almost anything. Wherever you physically are, that environment is the only environment that matters in that moment. If your feet are in the gym, you train. If your feet are at your desk, you work. If your feet are at home, you are at home. Here. Now. This. Being where your feet are is the discipline of containment. It means deliberately closing one mental loop before entering the next. You pause, reset and arrive before you engage. This takes training. Andrew Raymond liked thisAndrew Raymond liked thisI know lots of people absolutely love this weather, but as someone living with Multiple Sclerosis, this UK heat wave and I are definitely not besties. ☀️🥵😂 If I was lying beside a swimming pool somewhere gorgeous with a cocktail in hand, I think I'd cope with the heat just fine… 😂 Unfortunately, reality is a little less glamorous! For many people with MS, heat sensitivity is a real thing. Even a small increase in body temperature can temporarily make symptoms worse, leaving us feeling exhausted, foggy and generally struggling more than usual. Add to that the fact that our office is basically a giant greenhouse (all windows and absolutely no air con 😅), these temperatures will be a bit of a challenge. That's why I wanted to give a huge shout out and thank you to my lovely manager Laura Preston DipRM, who has been incredibly understanding and has allowed me to work from the comfort of home while the UK is currently resembling the Costa del Sol! Being able to sit in front of my fan, regulate my temperature and avoid melting into a dramatic little puddle means I can continue doing my job comfortably without compromising my health. It's easy to underestimate how much a little flexibility and understanding can mean, but for people living with long-term conditions, these adjustments make such a difference. Feeling supported at work isn't something I take for granted, and I'm really grateful to work with people who genuinely care. Now, if anyone knows where I can find the swimming pool and cocktail that should've come with this weather, please let me know… And to my fellow MS warriors trying to survive this heat wave… keep those fans on, keep topping up on the ice lollies, and remember we're all in this sweaty little adventure together! 😂🍦☀️ #MultipleSclerosis #MSAwareness #FlexibleWorking #WorkplaceWellbeing #EmployeeWellbeing #DisabilityInclusion #MSTrust #MSSociety

Yes, your laptop fan sounds like it’s about to achieve lift-off. But outside? Your bin crew and posties are out there doing laps in what feels like the surface of the sun - no AC, no cold brew on tap, no “just pop into the shower for 5 mins reset.” So if you get a chance this week: be a decent human. A bottle of water. An ice lolly. A cold drink handed over the gate with a “you’re a star” and zero awkwardness. It takes 10 seconds. They’re out there all day. The people yearn for community. #UKHeatwave
