Sam Barnett shared thisHaven't posted in a long time, but this article has riled me enough to dust off my keyboard. @FT Is there anyone better suited than Matt Clifford to advise on AI? Can the article explain why governments consistently seek his counsel? And if not Matt, who else should the UK turn to for guidance? Matt doesn’t need defending – he’s more than capable of standing on his own. But this feels like a classic case of British "Tall Poppy Syndrome." At a time when the UK’s economic growth is weak, and our best tech companies and talent are scaling in the US instead of here , I’m grateful that someone with Matt’s ambition, experience, and expertise is advising the government. AI is a HUGE opportunity for the UK - for the economy, national security, research, public services & global influence - so we can compete - so we can be ahead in this revolution rather than lagging behind like a straggley wildebeest. Look at Eric Schmidt (former Google CEO), who’s working with the US government on a national AI strategy – an "Apollo program for AI." China isn’t messing around either. Leading in AI has enormous implications for national security, economic growth, and global power. Yet here in the UK, the government’s understanding of AI remains low. This could have serious consequences: economic stagnation, diminished national power, and losing our ability to shape the future of this transformative technology. We need the best minds helping the UK government right now. Matt is one of them. Who else should be at the table? How do we attract them? How do we speed up development, allocate resources effectively, drive breakthroughs, and regulate responsibly? Let’s write that article Anna Gross High-quality journalism should hold people accountable but must also be fair, objective, and intellectually rigorous. The FT usually excels at this. Matt is brilliant – patriotic, well-connected, and deeply experienced in driving technological progress. Let’s keep him focused on one of the most critical topics of our time. For all our sakes. Sam Barnett shared this2023 was the best year! Back in 2021, I had moved away from tech to become a full time artist. Fast forward to 2022, and when someone asked me what I did, I couldn't bring myself to utter the word "artist" without blushing and feeling deep embarrassment. I was a scared novice who hadn't exhibited any work. In 2023, my goal was to overcome this shame by showing and selling work for the first time. This is what happened in 2023 (humble brag alert): - I exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery next to David Hockney. - My work was visited by 2 million people on the world's largest screen (The Outernet) - I sold work for the first time - Christies auctioned it. The transition from tech to art was messy on a personal front - mainly because my identity was so intertwined with what I had done professionally (much longer dull story). Now I hopefully won't duck my head & stutter when people ask me what I do for a living. Loved 2023. More in 2024 please...... Thanks to all you heroes that helped along the way. Sam Barnett shared thisUntil Sunday, the National Portrait Gallery are exhibiting the Royally Big Portrait to celebrate BBC Children in Need. It's cool to see my art there (mild understatement 🤣...) 16,000 drawings made up the official portrait of King Charles III. In May 2023, 2 million people came to see the art on the worlds largest screen at the Outernet London & Christie's auctioned my work to raise over £50k for BBC Children in Need. Led by Sam Barnett, the 'Royally Big Portrait' was launched to mark the Coronation of King Charles III taking place tomorrow, 6 May. Children across the UK became part of the coronation’s “national moment” by drawing hundreds of thousands of individual artworks of the King, brought together to form a giant digital portrait. BBC Children In Need is a charity which aims to improve the lives of children in the UK by raising funds through a number of events. They help to fund grassroots organisations and project workers in every corner of the UK, who provide the vital relationships and support to help those children most in need. #Christies #Outernet #Auction #Charity #coronation #digital

Rather than comment, we’re publishing it in full. 👇 Swan has taken off. Our ambition hasn't changed: becoming the financial infrastructure for Europe's leading SaaS platforms. Since December, we’ve grown from €33M to €45M in annualized net revenue, remain on track to reach profitability in 2027, strengthened our entire leadership team with top talent, and our largest partners renewed for 5 years. Even Pennylane, while preparing its own banking license, has committed to working with us through 2028. The bigger story is what happened behind the scenes. While the market was questioning our trajectory, we transformed the company. We paused the roadmap to build for scale: industrialized operations, standardized processes, 140 hires in 6 months. Together, these funds represent something that we’ve been reaching for throughout Seedcamp ’s entire history: a true one-stop shop for founders raising the earliest capital. Those early bets are the kind of bets that scare most investors. But they’re why Seedcamp exists and what we excel in. I’m proud that we’re going to keep on writing those first checks. I’m also proud that now, our support doesn’t have to stop at that first check. The Select fund (our Nation fund) allows us to double down as founders scale, all the way through Series B and beyond. After a decade at high-growth startups, I was ready to slow down. It turns out, I was just taking a breath. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve returned to Calm as CEO of the consumer business. In my time away from Calm, I partnered with brilliant founders as an angel investor and advisor, became an Airbnb host, and skied more days than I should admit. I also vibe-coded some genuinely average products, which taught me more about humility than anything I’ve done professionally. But the chapter I’m most proud of? Being deeply present with my kids. I joined the PTO, co-founded our school’s first-ever annual fund, and didn’t miss a single dance class or swim lesson. What I didn’t expect was how much time away would sharpen my conviction about Calm’s mission. Whether in meeting rooms or school pickup lines, I kept seeing the same things: fractured attention, shorter tempers, and a lack of presence. Calm exists for exactly this moment. Huang sees it as the entry fee for building something important. ▪️ Innovation begins with experimentation ▪️ Experimentation comes from exploration ▪️ Exploration always produces some failure The key is not avoiding mistakes but spotting dead ends early and changing direction fast. Huang calls this intellectual honesty — the discipline to ask if something still makes sense and the courage to pivot when it does not. Without risk there is no experimentation. Without experimentation there is no innovation. And without innovation there is no lasting success. How do you decide when it is time to cut your losses and change course?
