Over two inspiring days, we had stimulating discussions on the future of Physical AI—bringing AI beyond the digital world into the environments where people live and work. It was exciting to explore shared interests in embodied intelligence, assistive robotics, tactile sensing, and human-robot interaction, while identifying opportunities for future UK–France and European collaborations. We had contributions from Kaspar Althoefer(Queen Mary University of London), Letizia Gionfrida (King's College London), Silvia Tulli (Sorbonne Université), Elisa Massi (CY Cergy Paris University), Zhi Yan (ENSTA), Adriana Tapus (ENSTA), Teodor-Alexandru Dicu and our host Shan Luo (King's College London). Shan Luo shared thisAccepted by IEEE Transactions on Robotics (T-RO), #EleTac is a great piece of collaborative research with Prof. @Van Anh Ho's group at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, exploring how an elephant trunk inspired soft robot gripper can be embodied with vision-based tactile sensing. By introducing the "gripper-as-sensor" paradigm, #EleTac demonstrates how the gripper itself can become a rich sensing interface, integrating proprioception, exteroception, and manipulation into a single soft robotic system. We believe this represents an exciting direction towards intelligent soft robots capable of operating safely in complex real-world environments. Congratulations to Tuan Nguyen, Xuyang Zhang, Quan Luu, for this excellent achievement. It has been a pleasure working together, and this is a fruitful outcome of Tuan's visit to our Robot Perception Lab at Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences, King's College London. It enables integrated proprioception, exteroception, and grasping capabilities. This is not a typical software role. You will work at the intersection of: - robot control and real-time systems - hardware–software integration - safety-critical / regulated development (ISO 13485, IEC 62304) - and first-in-human clinical translation We are taking a system that has been under development for 7+ years into clinical investigation, in collaboration with Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. From experience came understanding. In a recent interview with Dwarkesh Patel, Richard Sutton — father of reinforcement learning and winner of the 2024 Turing Award — argues that large language models are a dead end. Why? Because they can’t learn while acting. They only replay what they’ve already digested. For Sutton, true intelligence doesn’t come from scaling static models, but from agents that continuously adapt — that improve through interaction with their environment. Learning, in this view, isn’t a phase of training; it’s a way of being. It’s the same spirit that shaped reinforcement learning decades ago: act, receive feedback, adjust. A loop simple enough to fit on a napkin — yet powerful enough to teach machines how to walk, play, trade, and win. Whether or not LLMs are a “dead end,” Sutton’s point is deeper: Progress in AI won’t come from memorizing more — it will come from experiencing more. From algorithms that live, not just compute. It's my pleasure to share our latest research with Qiru MA, Kejun Du, Zhiya Su, Prof. Hong K. Lo, Ir. May Tso, Ir. H.W. Chan and Prof. Ricky Lee on a simple yet impactful solution for a common urban problem: uneven passenger distribution on metro trains. Our study introduces a novel approach to guide passengers toward less-crowded train cars by changing the direction of existing escalators at different stations. By modeling various passenger behaviors and using an efficient optimization framework, we were able to test this strategy on Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system - thanks MTR for providing the data. The simulation results were significant: * A 42.25% reduction in train load variance, leading to a much more even distribution of passengers. * A 22.17% decrease in passenger discomfort. This research demonstrates that a cost-effective operational change—without any expensive infrastructure upgrades— improves metro system efficiency and overall passenger experience. In collaboration with Southwest Jiaotong University (Yanxing Cheng, Li Wang, Jun Zheng, Zigang Deng, Weihua Zhang), a new paper has been published in the IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification on "A Novel Noncontact Failure Detection Method for Vehicle-Mounted HTS Bulks Based on Null-Flux Coils: Scheme, Theory, and Experiment." High-temperature superconducting (HTS) pinning maglev technology is considered promising for high-speed transportation due to its self-stabilizing characteristics, and it has been widely studied worldwide. In high-speed engineering applications, safety is a primary concern, largely dependent on the reliable flux-pinning capability of the onboard superconductors. This paper proposes a non-contact, non-destructive, and easy-to-implement real-time monitoring method for assessing the flux-pinning state of HTS bulks onboard maglev vehicles, based on the anti-symmetric property of null-flux coils. The configuration, working principle, and mathematical model of the method are established, along with a coil geometry optimization strategy and a tailored low-frequency, narrow-band filtering circuit. An experimental setup is then built based on the optimized parameters, and a series of tests are performed to the method's feasibility. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the resonance-frequency-based filtering circuit in enhancing signal extraction is analyzed, and theoretical predictions of the relationship between the voltage signal and factors such as displacement, working height, and degradation level are validated experimentally. This study provides a comprehensive investigation from concept to validation and demonstrates strong potential for real-time safety monitoring in HTS maglev systems.
