That included that we’ve now scaled MOJ-built bespoke AI tools to thousands of frontline probation staff, which has saved over 133,000+ hours that can be better spent on rehabilitation and reducing reoffending. The DPM also announced our next big bet: AI in the courts. We'll be trialling AI-powered virtual legal assistants in Crown Courts, alongside tools to help judges identify trial-ready cases and make better use of valuable court time. Watch this space! AI is just one part of the plan, alongside work to transform all corners of justice through better data, brilliant digital products and great transformation skills. We have a huge portfolio of transformation - from our open source data linking tech that has now surpassed 12 million downloads globally, to incubating advanced counter-drone technologies for prisons, to deploying new digital products each week across justice agencies that improve productivity. Just two examples from the last few weeks: we’ve scaled biometric check ins for offenders in the community and deployed a new visit booking tool that reduces time spent by family and friends of an offender from hours to seconds. And it’s not just what we’re building but how we’re doing it that’s pretty exciting. We are the first government department to scale forward deployed engineers, representing a real shift in co-creation between digital and ops, and we have a razor sharp focus on skills, with tens of thousands of colleagues trained in AI and a new senior leader programme called Control, Shift, Lead to ensure Directors from all functions and backgrounds across justice are equipped with the skills to lead transformation in an age of AI. Simon Shenton shared thisAfter 12 superb years, I handed in my trusty BCG laptop on Friday. My friends there have been lightly ribbing me that after a leaving dinner, separate drinks, and hijacking a couple of work events, I've been on somewhat of a "farewell tour", so I will keep it short in case this opens me up to more accusations of over-sentimentality. BCG is a singularly special place. I could not have enjoyed the last decade and a bit more. Thank you to my clients, teams and friends for making it so formative and rewarding. Your generous words and messages will stay with me for a very long time. It was a very very hard decision to leave, but am incredibly excited for what's next. More on that later, after a couple of months of walking, piano, learning pottery, and spending time with the kids. Quite excited about that too.

Richard and I take you through two recent experiences of implementing GenAI tools, and what we learned from them. In one project, we used GenAI to simplify a complex service that was driving a lot of 'failure demand' - i.e. calls from citizens saying 'I don't understand what I'm being asked to do here'. My takeaway was how broadly applicable these tools could be across many Government services; something that I think governments need to get better at. In another project developing a GenAI decision support tool, Richard's big takeaway was about the importance of involving all stakeholders throughout development. See more in the video. I honestly think a big reason for this is that I took 5 months Shared Parental Leave to be "parent in charge" whilst my wife went back to work. SPL is great, but it doesn't make financial or childcare sense for everyone. That's why it's so great that BCG has just updated its parental leave policy so that parents, regardless of gender, and including those adopting and having kids through a surrogate, will receive 26 weeks of paid leave. This is going to materially improve the lives of a bunch of 'soon to be' BCG dads and mums, and more broadly I hope helps re-balance expectations on who can and should be the primary caregiver for kids in those early months. For the first time, one department held the near full digital stack: fibre and mobile connectivity; data centres; joined-up public data infrastructure through the National Data Library; the digital capability, delivery and mandate of wider GDS for public service impact and AI; the broader AI Strategy with real money behind it; real firepower within its own ranks. Exciting - no department outside the Cabinet Office has had that much digital potential before. But the power of that stack proves itself locally, not just nationally — in a council office, a combined authority, a resident waiting on a service that's meant to work better because of it. I was in meetings where successive ministers demanded impact — joined up local government services, inclusion — yet DSIT-corporate to a large extent seemed to wrestle with this. Connectivity policy and growth /value ambitions are distant from one another; the National Data Library — now launched and crucial for local impact — was hard Whitehall miles; GDS Local is a step forward but still represents a relatively minor investment; useful services like One Login are still well out of reach. Some of those instincts are muscle-memory from the Willetts era well over a decade ago: comfortable with the strategy and the frameworks; at home with universities, deep tech and big tech but less at ease in the room with a council leader who wants to know what tools help them change things for residents next year. The Place Test isn’t about more guidance local government can use; an isolated exemplar like an AI Town; or a product created for Whitehall departments vaguely available to a local council. It's whether a mayor, a council leader, a combined authority now has something they didn't have before — to take an action, prevent a social harm, or just have greater agency. Thanks to Ministerial pressure and those inside who saw this bigger picture, DSIT was shifting in the right direction (especially compared to what came before). But on the ground it too often distantly represented itself like a newly-empowered Whitehall department rather than the agent of local change it could have been: - More connected places supporting jobs and making people healthier and safer - More data-sharing across and between levels of government to support prevention - More common digital and data services, built once with local government - and used often The future? We'll see soon. But these outcomes are just as fundamental to real devolution as to growth.

Justice Transcribe has now been used more than 1 million times by probation staff across England and Wales. The technology records meetings with people on probation and drafts case notes, helping staff spend less time on admin. It was first piloted in 2025, and by March 2026, it had been rolled out nationally. It’s received over 70,000 reviews from staff, rating it 4.75 out of 5, and has saved more than 160,000 hours. This gives them more time to be present in supervision meetings, build trust and support rehabilitation. Justice AI Unit

Simon Shenton liked thisSimon Shenton liked thisBuilding DSIT was hard graft, and it was creating something special that mattered for Britain. There will be a lot of people inside and outside government sad today about its loss. But - this is the dealt hand, and now it needs to be played superbly for the sake of the country. Some thoughts: 1. We need clarity ASAP (today?) on what goes where. Eg the CO take some or all AI functions or are they in DBIST and DCMS respectively? Which? This really matters for the sector, for international partners and for staff. Confusion and uncertainty are the enemy. 2. We must make real the advantages of a Minister for AI at the heart of Government. Huge support for Kanishka Narayan MP and a drive for really strong strategic coordination. The Cabinet Office at its best can make things happen - and it’s going to need to be at its best on this. Let’s make some really fantastic lemonade. 3. One of the things that worked in DSIT was seeing data, digital capability and AI as part of an integrated whole - both for the wider economy and for government itself, not three things. This can and must be kept even if it means some knotty coordination between CO, DBIST and DCMS. 4. Making identities around a “poacher” DCMS and a “gamekeeper” DBIST” on tech is a terrible way to get action at pace - too much time wasted on internecine war (see also recent shenanigans on copyright, which have been too slow whatever you think the answer is). Clear and specific direction from No 10 early on what the government’s united approach is will matter to keep this orderly. 5. Some special things were happening in the culture of DSIT - a deep curiosity about the future; a practical openness to external talent and external views in many different forms; a will to innovate and try stuff; a true respect for technical expertise. This must be kept and spread - CO, DBIST and DCMS all need more of this and this is a chance to “infect” them. This needs leadership and energy - don’t lose the moment. Finally and most importantly, (so it doesn’t get a number) now is the time to look after the people who worked in DSIT. Many of them are utterly brilliant and regularly frustrated. Many are not lifetime civil servants. Some are now being moved to their third new Department in two years. Now is the time to put them first and to retain them - today is the day to call your friends in S&T government and tell them how much they matter, how much difference they make, and how you want them to stay when it’s hard. Some special love for GDS who have been pushed around a lot while doing stuff that really matters, and for corporate services colleagues who did such a great job managing two successive big integrations and will be questioning their sanity right now. This message is part of my own mini-campaign to shout “Team DSIT: you are the best and you matter. You will make a difference wherever you are. Keep calm and don’t even consider just carrying on - ADVANCE!”

It’s been a privilege to be in the cabinet of a Labour government and to serve the country. Andy Burnham has called to tell me I won’t be a part of his new cabinet. I wish him and his team every success. I was brought into Downing Street and the Cabinet Office to improve Government delivery and I’m pleased that today many of the big metrics are moving in the right direction: 👨⚕️NHS waiting lists down 📉Immigration back to more manageable levels 💷 Wages consistently rising faster than prices, and 📈Better economic growth figures than other big economies (although I’d love to see us doing more on that). I wish the new government every success. With Reform on the verge of imploding, an irrelevant Conservative Party and a tired SNP, there are big opportunities for Labour to push on. I’ll continue to fight from the backbenches for more power, wealth and opportunity for the many - and proudly represent the place I was born and raised as MP for Bristol North West.

Simon Shenton liked thisSimon Shenton liked thisThe FT and Guardian report that the new PM will disband the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSIT), splitting its functions between a beefed-up Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Responsibility for AI in public services may go to the Cabinet Secretary. One DSIT function I know and care about, having co-founded it, is the Government Digital Service (GDS). Since DBT is mooted to become the Ministry of Industry, GDS would likely land in DCMS. This is crazy. Here's why. Merging Whitehall departments causes at least a year of internal mayhem, distracting from what Ministers actually care about. Senior officials get bogged down haggling over org charts, roles and pay, while merging IT systems is a nightmare with no end. This government has barely two years to show voters improved services, and you want to waste a year shuffling deckchairs? You're not serious about devolution if GOV.UK One Login isn't politically backed to prioritise local authorities and MSAs over Whitehall. DCMS doesn't have and never will have that political capital. Devolution requires Whitehall to provide local government and MSAs with the digital plumbing underpinning all modern public services, a gargantuan cultural shift needing genuine servant leadership from the centre. Such cross-jurisdiction digital public infrastructure is hard to get right, and GDS generally does it well. We need more common platforms like GOV.UK Notify, used by tens of thousands of public services to send billions of messages, and GOV.UK Pay, which handles billions in payments across thousands of services. GDS is following an ambitious roadmap including a common digital wallet and digital credentials. DCMS drafts policy and herds ALBs; it can't lead radical reform of public service foundations. Has this been thought through? Has it? Making the most of AI to improve public services requires new AI-native common platforms. You're not serious about AI-driven reform if one "AI for public services" platform team sits in Cabinet Office while the teams handling non-AI platforms and common data sit at the margins in DCMS. Have you not clocked the chaos this invites? Finally, and most seriously, many of the best people will just leave. Deckchair shuffling is for the unserious
