Three months ago, I completed the longest distance ever covered in the history of the Marathon des Sables Legendary: 270km across the Sahara, in extreme heat and unforgiving terrain, carrying everything I needed to keep me alive on my back. 🏃♂️➡️ 🏝️
Upon reflection, the lasting impact hasn't just been the physical achievement. It's been the reminder that mindset nearly always matters more than circumstances.
In my business life, it's sometimes easy to become consumed by the next target, the next meeting, or the next deal. MDS reminded me that meaningful progress rarely comes from a single breakthrough or transaction. It's built through consistency, making decisions under pressure, adapting when plans inevitably change (because they always do!), and continuing to move forward even when the finish line feels a long way off, or impossible.
Over the years, I've navigated my share of business highs and lows: from leading a trading business through the financial crisis, to managing projects across Africa and the Middle East, to building and exiting two energy infrastructure startups in Europe.
I've learned that resilience and perspective are rarely developed during the easy periods. They're forged through uncertainty, setbacks, and difficult decisions. MDS didn't teach me those lessons for the first time, but it reinforced them in a way that only an experience like that can. It reminded me that even the biggest challenges become manageable when you stay present, focus on the next few steps rather than the entire journey, and trust that consistent progress compounds over time.
Equally, I'm grateful for the incredible people I was privileged to share the journey with. The friendships forged in the Sahara are ones I'll carry with me for life.
