ASCE UESI has introduced a new board certification for utility engineering professionals: Board-Certified Project Utility Engineer (BC.PUE). This is a meaningful step for the utility engineering and subsurface utility engineering community. As infrastructure projects become more complex, owners, designers, contractors, and utility stakeholders need professionals who can manage utility risk, coordinate across disciplines, and apply sound judgment from planning through delivery. According to ASCE, board certification recognizes advanced knowledge and expertise in the field and reflects leadership, ethics, continuing education, and commitment to current technology and methods. Typical baseline requirements listed by ASCE include: • Current P.E. license or approved equivalent • At least 10 years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience • At least 8 years in the specialty area • Application materials, references, review, and an online exam For anyone working in utility engineering, SUE, utility coordination, utility risk management, designating, records review, or project delivery, this is worth reviewing.
