The biggest update to flood design requirements in decades is coming to the 2027 I-Codes. Are you ready? The latest flood provisions from ASCE/SEI 7-22 Supplement 2 and ASCE/SEI 24-24, Flood Resistant Design and Construction, have officially been incorporated into the 2027 I-Codes, scheduled for release this fall. These provisions represent the most significant update to flood requirements since the 1970s, incorporating modern reliability-based approaches developed through the American Society of Civil Engineers' ANSI-accredited consensus standards process. Key changes include: • Design flood requirements that vary by Risk Category • Expansion of the flood hazard area from the 100-year floodplain to the 500-year floodplain for Risk Category II, III, and IV buildings • Higher design flood elevations and protection levels for higher-risk structures • Flood loads based on strength design rather than allowable stress design • Sea level change requirements for coastal flood design If you design, review, regulate, or own buildings in flood-prone areas, now is a good time to become familiar with these new requirements. Innovative Girder Repair Extends Bridges' Service Life This week's technical note is from the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering paper "Experimental and Numerical Evaluation of the Sandwich Panel Repair Method for Corrosion-Damaged Bridge Girders" by Anna Tarasova, Deven Kanakamedala, Ph.D., Jungil Seo, Ph.D, Amit Varma, and Robert Connor. Aging steel bridges often experience corrosion at girder ends caused by water and deicing salts leaking through deteriorated expansion joints, creating safety concerns and increasing maintenance demands. The authors evaluated a sandwich panel repair method using laboratory testing and computer modeling to determine how reinforced filler material and steel plates can restore the structural capacity of corrosion-damaged girders under various conditions. Climate change is reshaping how engineers think about infrastructure safety, reliability, and risk over the long term. The SEI Reliability-Based Performance Indicators Committee's book, Effects of Climate Change on Life-Cycle Performance of Structures and Infrastructure Systems: Safety, Reliability, and Risk, was selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers to receive the 2026 ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award, in recognition of outstanding review and interpretation of state-of-the-art methods, theories, and ideas for the benefit of the profession.
