NEW YORK — JULY 22
Growth doesn't come from more marketing. It comes from knowing when your brand is actually ready to scale.
Douglas Cajas, Head of Media Investments at mediaforgrowth (MFG), has spent more than two decades helping consumer brands sharpen their growth strategy and expand through premium media. He works closely with founders to evaluate brand readiness, identify growth opportunities, and avoid scaling too soon.
At UGLY TALK: WHY INVESTORS DON'T BET ON YOUR BRAND, Douglas will break down the signals that separate scalable brands from the rest, what investors and growth partners look for before backing a company, and the mistakes that quietly limit a brand's potential.

Twelve months ago today, we invested in KA-EX® and kicked off the brand’s US launch with Tennis Channel, featuring KA-EX throughout Wimbledon.
That was the beginning of a partnership.
As the business gained momentum, we doubled down on our investment. Expanding into new markets and launching new media activations to support additional product lines.
In less than 12 months, KA-EX has:
• Expanded retail distribution from just over 300 stores to more than 1,330 locations
• Grown US sales to become its largest international market
• Secured a national listing with GNC
• Reached more than 20.3 million consumers through MFG’s media platform
For us, these milestones represent more than strong marketing results. They demonstrate what is possible when media is deployed strategically as growth capital and investors and founders are aligned around long-term growth.
Congratulations to the entire KA-EX team on an incredible first year in the US. We’re excited to continue building together.

What happens when the world's most powerful VC firms decide capital isn't enough and start building a media company inside their fund?
As customer acquisition costs continue to rise and attention becomes increasingly fragmented, the ability to reach consumers at scale is becoming one of the most valuable assets a company can have.
In this latest article for Fast Company, our CEO, Diana Florescu, explores why leading venture firms are rethinking the traditional VC model and why distribution is emerging as the new moat for growth-stage companies.
We'll be discussing this and more at the MFG Media Capital Summit on September 29th in San Francisco.

We're pleased to welcome Christopher Hill as Strategic Advisor to mediaforgrowth (MFG)

We're excited to have him join us and look forward to working together.

The world’s largest gathering of media capital investors is back.
San Francisco. September 29. 🗓️
We’re excited to announce the MFG Media Capital Summit returns for its sixth edition, continuing a tradition that began in London and New York.
This year we’re bringing together 60–80 leaders from across broadcast, streaming, out-of-home, digital publishing, and retail media - alongside the VCs, CVCs, family offices, and founders shaping the next generation of consumer brands.
Together, the media organisations represented in the room account for over $29B in annual advertising revenue.
The major theme for this edition is how brands are built, scaled, and financed in the AI era. Across the day, we’ll explore:
- How AI reshapes how brands are discovered and bought
- How does attention pricing change the flow of advertising capital, and what does that mean for the media groups and investors in this room
- Where television, streaming, OOH, retail media, and digital publishing fit into the next chapter of brand growth
- How AI is rewriting the creative playbook
-How investors are evaluating consumer brands today
-What media for equity transactions look like in practice (with live case studies)

We’re excited to share that Tryp.com, one of MFG's portfolio brands, has entered into a strategic partnership with Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest-growing low-cost carrier.
Wizz Air’s new AI-powered Wizz Holidays platform is built on TRYP’s proprietary technology, enabling personalized, multi-destination holiday bookings while expanding the airline’s travel offering beyond flights.
Congrats, André Rangel and the team at Tryp.com, on this major milestone 👏
Second year at the Specialty Food Association. We left with one clear conclusion: we’re entering a new era for consumer brands.
One of the standout sessions was led by NielsenIQ’s Sherry Frey and Whipstitch Capital’ Nicolas McCoy, exploring how AI, changing consumer behaviour, and retail fragmentation are reshaping the future of consumer brands.
Here are a few insights that really stood out:
📈 Innovation is accelerating
NIQ projects new SKU launches to grow from 45,000 in 2025 to more than 73,000 by 2030 (+10% CAGR), with small brands driving much of this growth. AI is set to accelerate both product innovation and category expansion.
🥫 The opportunity for challenger brands has never been greater. Their key growth advantages include:
• Founder-led storytelling
• Community building
• Faster innovation
• Greater agility
• Retail whitespace
• Premiumisation
• Increasing purchase frequency within the existing customer base
The biggest challenge remains the same: building brand awareness and securing distribution with limited capital.
📦 Consumers expect almost instant gratification
• Average US ecommerce delivery times have fallen from 6.2 days in 2020 to just 3.1 days in 2025.
• Grocery and gourmet food now have the fastest delivery expectations of any retail category, with consumers expecting delivery in just over 2 days.
🤖 AI is becoming the next retail shelf
• 84% want retailers to make products easier to discover.
• 65% value personalised recommendations.
• 58% are comfortable with AI suggesting products.
• 51% would use AI to help manage household shopping.
• 40% are already comfortable with AI making purchasing decisions on their behalf.
This also reinforced one of the key themes from our Building Brands in the AI Era event in London earlier this year: brands need to optimise for AI discoverability, not just Google discoverability.
💰 We’re living in a K-shaped economy
Households earning >$100k continue increasing food spending (+13.1%), while spending among households earning less than $100k has remained broadly flat.
One quote from the presentation perfectly captured today’s consumer mindset:
“They can’t buy the house. So they’re buying the $30 olive oil.”
💉 GLP-1 users aren’t abandoning food; they’re changing how they buy. Consumers using GLP-1 medications are:
• Seeking bolder, more complex flavours
• Buying more herbs, spices and extracts
• Becoming more intentional shoppers
• Increasing purchases of clean-label and organic products
My biggest takeaway:
Fragmentation is no longer something brands should fear. More channels, more niches, increasingly personalised consumer preferences, and AI-powered discovery are creating more opportunities for differentiated brands to win.

🔥 5th Avenue got a new kind of activation - a 3D Hologram Truck driving through Manhattan !
This one was for KA-EX® - a Swiss performance drink brand launching in New York .
The truck drove through Manhattan , then parked at 122 5th Ave for the evening event .
A moving theater on the streets - floating 3D holograms visible from the sidewalk , people stopped , phones out.
Big credit to Pedro Pablo Schmidt , Farid Mhedbi and Roger Franz Wilfinger at KA-EX® , and to Diana Florescu , Neville Taraporewalla and Douglas Cajas at mediaforgrowth (MFG) for making it happen
The truck is now based in New York. It goes where the people are . And with FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States heading to the city - the streets are about to get interesting .
What would your brand do with a 3D Hologram Truck on your streets ? 🔥
Thirty days after Legora hired Jude Law for a brand campaign, visits to its website increased by 900%.
The interesting question, beyond whether the campaign worked, is why a B2B software company felt the need to do a mass-media campaign in the first place.
For years, the assumption was that B2B tech wins through product demos, industry conferences, and field sales teams. Today, some of the fastest-growing AI companies are borrowing from consumer marketing.
Why?
The paradox of AI is that as technology becomes easier to build, trust becomes harder to earn.
In categories where buyers make high-consequence decisions, such as legal, financial, healthcare, cybersecurity buyers need confidence that the company will be around in five years, that other serious organisations are adopting it, and that it is becoming part of the industry standard.
Mass media creates legitimacy.
It signals scale, permanence, and category leadership.
The most interesting impact of AI on marketing may be that it turns brand from a luxury into a strategic asset, even at early growth stages and even in B2B.
As technology becomes commoditised, trust, recognition, and category leadership become the differentiators.
At mediaforgrowth (MFG) we see this every day. Founders often approach us thinking solely about customer acquisition. They find out that the strongest campaigns also influence investors, partners, employees, retailers, and customer lifetime value.
If you're building a category-defining company but are not yet ready to fund a major media campaign (and hire Jude Law 😀 ), let's talk.
Kudos to Max Junestrand and the team
