In addition to classes offered, the PA State Weekend at the National Fire Academy was further highlighted by a memorial service held in the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel where seven PA firefighters who have died in the line of duty from July one, 2025 to June 30, 2026 were recognized. The memorial service concluded at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial with a wreathlaying, seven red carnations in a boot, and the playing of taps.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was pleased to participate in the Pennsylvania State Weekend program at the National Fire Academy this past weekend by offering its Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge class along with its The First Five Minutes for First Due class. The Pennsylvania Weekend set an NFA record by having more than 350 participants from fire and EMS agencies around the Commonwealth in attendance.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation applauds today's announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs highlighting major progress in processing Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) survivor claims. Over the past four weeks, the PSOB Program finalized more than three times as many survivor claim determinations as it did during the previous nine months, delivering more than $96 million in benefits to eligible surviving families of fallen public safety officers. "This is a meaningful step forward... Delivering $96 million in benefits in a matter of weeks shows what's possible when we prioritize the first responder community," said Victor Stagnaro, CEO of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The Foundation appreciates the leadership of the Department of Justice and the PSOB team for their commitment to serving Fire Hero Families and looks forward to continuing this momentum for current and future applicants, including families now eligible for occupational cancer-related benefits. Every other month, the NFFF would like to recognize some of the 250+ volunteer advocates we have in the United States as part of our Advocate Spotlight. This month's nominee is Fire Inspector Howard Rieger, a 28-year veteran of the fire service. He began his career as a volunteer Firefighter with the Carthage Fire Department in Upstate NY. He got hired as a DoW Firefighter in 2011 at Fort Drum, NY and is currently working as a Fire Inspector with the US Navy at NAS Jacksonville in Florida. "The NFFF Advocacy program has a special place in my heart. As the State of Florida Lead Advocate, I can see the impact that the foundation and the Advocacy is doing. Firefighters lives are being saved! One thing I talk to my Advocates about is the NFFF Memorial Weekend. I have been a Family Escort since 2018, and being an advocate brings home why we do what we do!" Howard, thank you for all that you do for the firefighters in your state and throughout the country. Congratulations to Seth Statler, recipient of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's Arthur J. Glatfelter Distinguished Service Award. Thirty-five years ago, Seth drafted the legislation that established the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial and, two years later, with the support of the late Senator Paul Sarbanes, helped create the legislation that established the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation itself. Over the years, he has served four terms on the Board of Directors and has been the driving force behind the Sarbanes Scholarship Program, which has awarded more than $7.3 million in educational assistance to the families of our fallen heroes.
