Sometimes the smallest moments make the biggest difference. 💙 When 2-year-old Elowyn traveled from Chicago for care, she was missing her dog, Bingo, back home. Meeting Murphy brought an extra-special smile to her day. In fact, when it was time for her procedure, Elowyn was allowed to choose two items to bring with her to the room. She chose her stuffed octopus and Murphy’s Butterfly Paws card! Her mom shared, "That picture was a great comfort for her during all the pre-op stuff and after. That pup really made her day." We're so grateful for Murphy and all the comfort our dogs in the Butterfly Paws program bring to patients and families every day.

Meet Olive! Shortly after her family welcomed her into the world, Olive experienced respiratory distress after aspirating. A chest X-ray revealed she had situs inversus totalis, a rare condition in which the body's organs are mirrored from their usual positions. This unexpected diagnosis led to further testing, where specialists and geneticists suspected Olive may have primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). PCD is a rare genetic condition that affects the body's ability to clear mucus from the lungs and airways. Over the next several weeks in the NICU, Olive required a ventilator, CPAP and supplemental oxygen. After 35 days, she was finally able to go home with her family! “We had a great inpatient experience at Nationwide Children's and love going to our specialist appointments to meet with her team in the clinic,” her mom shared. Today, Olive's journey continues through regular visits with the Nationwide Children's PCD Clinic and daily nebulizer treatments to help keep her lungs healthy and strong. While her diagnosis is lifelong, it doesn't slow her down. “She will be two this August, and she is such a happy and fun little girl!” #LifeAtNCH #NCHNICUGrad
