Today at IBM #ThinkSingapore 2026, our Founder and CEO, Michael Biercuk, will take the keynote stage to discuss how quantum computing is delivering practical value for the energy sector. Developing next-generation EV batteries and advanced clean energy technologies requires solving some of the world's most computationally demanding materials science problems. These simulations consume roughly one-third of global supercomputer time, yet remain constrained by the limits of classical computing. Using Q-CTRL's infrastructure software on IBM Quantum hardware, we demonstrated practical quantum advantage by solving a real materials discovery problem 3,000 times faster than the best available alternative classical software, reducing compute time from more than 100 hours to just two minutes. In May Q-CTRL published an incredible result, showing that a #quantumcomputer could perform a materials science simulation better/faster than the alternatives in a regime that was classically difficult. Queue the challengers! We showed that using the best available tooling would require about 3000X longer on a standard compute cluster to achieve agreement within ~1%. Almost immediately we saw a few claims of the "ease" of the computation we performed, some claiming this was handled in just 2minutes on a laptop. We had good insights into why we thought those claims were not fully correct, but we take technical challenges seriously as scientists committed to our core value to Be Trusted. So we've added a dramatically expanded comparison against all of the methods raised by others. TLDR: nothing changes. We saw that, as originally understood, some of the alternate methods could perform very well for calculating individual observables. But small changes - like which lattice site was being simulated - would break the quality. And there are over 7000 observables returned by our largest simulations. We also saw that the highly parallelizable Heisenberg methods would still be slower than the quantum computer even if fully parallelized over tens of thousands of compute nodes: "In the maximally parallelized case the minimal compute time is set by the maximal time required to evolve a single observable; the [best-performing Heisenberg method ] calculation would thus require a minimum of approximately 1000s over...tens of thousands of compute cores. For the benchmarks conducted in this work, for which we extract one- and two-point expectation values, we conclude that TDVP remains the most resource-efficient publicly-available classical baseline" Most importantly, we were thrilled that the expert team Multiverse Computing led by Román Orús performed a comprehensive comparison, building totally new tools (beyond what was publicly available) to compare against our QC results. They both expanded the regime of QC/simulation agreement and also confirmed that the QC was more than order of magnitude faster than their new expert-built, GPU-accelerated implementation. We were careful in our discussions and in the paper to clarify we aren't claiming an absolute advantage over any conceivable classical tooling, but rather PRACTICAL quantum advantage over what is accessible. And for now even with 10k's of classical compute cores and new methods, the quantum advantage holds. We know that the topic of classical simulation methods for quantum dynamics is a hot and sometimes contentious area of research.
