Microsoft stuck its foot squarely in its mouth last week when it suggested its digital crimes unit would pursue security researchers who "irresponsibly" disclose 0day. But our view is simple: Microsoft can't dictate what researchers do with the bugs they discover. If you can't entice hackers to disclose bugs via your preferred channels, that's a you problem! (aka skill issue.)

The 1990s hacking community helped shape the development of security thinking. In this episode from Risky Business Media, Pat Gray and Amberleigh Jack revisit that era and the people behind it, from the early days of open collaboration to the moments that brought hacking into the public spotlight. Veracode Co-founder & Chief Security Evangelist, Chris Wysopal, known for his work with the L0pht, was part of a community that operated very differently from today. Hackers collaborated closely, shared research freely, and went to great lengths to exchange tools, ideas, and techniques. Information moved through tight-knit networks, driven by curiosity and a shared interest in understanding how systems really worked. That culture of openness and hands-on exploration helped accelerate learning and pushed the field forward at a time when formal security practices were still taking shape. Many of the norms around research, disclosure, and community knowledge-sharing trace back to this period. It’s a compelling look at the people, mindset, and moments that influenced how security evolved and developed into the application risk management movement we see today.
