Since 2004, major grid incidents in the US have grown 10x. It doesn't look like we should expect a reversal anytime soon. PJM, the largest grid operator in the country, hit an all-time demand record this week across the eastern US — sixty-five million people, record heat, record load. Article from Bloomberg attached. Staying cool during an event like this shouldn't be uncertain. That's the basic expectation the grid was built to meet, and the one every operator in that region was working to protect this week. It's getting harder to deliver, and not because there isn't enough generation. The grid was designed for one-way power flow with large plants, predictable loads, operators who knew their feeders and their customers for thirty years. It's hard to ignore that the world is so different now. Today, power moves in every direction with distributed generation, storage and mobile load. The demand spike arriving during an event like this week's don't look like what the original system was built to expect, and demand response programs that used to be optional have become the margin between holding the grid and asking 65 million people to cut their AC. To be clear, the operators are not failing but this gap is real. The grid has always depended on coordination. The grid doesn't stop at the meter, and neither does Texture. This week's product update extends our platform to utility-scale batteries via R-TAC and DNP3, ingesting 300+ data points per front-of-meter asset. We also added OpenADR 2.0b support, so utilities running demand response over existing ADR infrastructure can now have Texture participate as a VEN. And for grid operators, Explore now lets you save filter configurations and navigate the full grid hierarchy, from meter to transformer to substation. On the programs side, DR event reporting got a meaningful refresh: chronological event actions, cleaner energy KPIs (including a new Battery Discharge Energy tile), and participation scoped to command-eligible device types only. When your lights blink before going out, most people assume something broke. But often it means the opposite, that the grid just saved itself. Up to 90% of faults on overhead distribution lines are temporary. Reclosers trip, wait, and test the line again. If the fault cleared, power's back and all you saw was a blink. The grid moved on without you noticing. What's harder to see: every one of those operations is a signal. Whether utilities can act on it depends on having the visibility and connectivity model to understand what's actually downstream.
