As artificial intelligence rapidly changes healthcare, we are joining with partners across the healthcare ecosystem to give health systems and technology companies practical tools for responsible AI deployment. University of Rochester Medicine is joining Operationalizing AI Governance in Healthcare, a new initiative led by the Connected Health Collaborative Community at the Digital Medicine Society. It is a movement to building practical, responsible approaches for how AI is evaluated, implemented and governed across real-world care environments. We look forward to contributing our experience, learning alongside others and bringing those insights back to our teams as we continue building the future of healthcare.

A full-circle moment in the Cath Lab. 💙 After 28 years of saving lives at Strong Memorial Hospital, interventional cardiologist Christopher Cove, MD, is scaling back his duties and recently performed his final case in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The moment was even more special because he was able to share it with his son Alexander Cove, MD, a new Cardiology fellow, who scrubbed in for the procedure. “It was an ideal way to step away from a big part of my career, and I’m glad to be handing it down to the next generation,” said the proud father!

The connection between walking and brain health keeps getting more interesting. 🧠 👣 A new study found that adults in their 80s who maintained a faster walking pace were less likely to experience cognitive decline. And our researchers have found walking reveals super-agers (AKA people whose brains appear to stay younger than expected). Getting gene therapies to the brain has long been one of the biggest challenges in treating neurological disease. The blood-brain barrier blocks many therapies, and those that do reach the brain often affect cells and organs they weren't intended to target. Researchers at University of Rochester Medicine have developed a new approach that could help change that. Led by Steve Goldman, MD, PhD, the team combined engineered gene therapy vectors with the brain's own glymphatic transport system to deliver therapeutic genes broadly throughout the brain while preferentially targeting human glial cells—the support cells increasingly recognized as key players in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and age-related white matter disorders. The work builds on decades of pioneering research at URochester Medicine into glial biology and the glymphatic system, offering a promising new platform for developing safer, more effective gene therapies for neurological disease.
