Al Danto shared thisJuly 11, 2022 was my alive day. I had been discharged from Houston Methodist for two weeks where I had two complex surgeries to remove a non malignant tumor when a pulmonary embolism hit and I spent the next 13 days on life support. I'm here today because of a chain of fortunate events and some incredible people. I happened to be at my house five minutes from the Texas Medical Center. Not somewhere else. Not on the road. Not in a meeting. My daughter had just got off work, had her blood pressure cuff and stethoscope, checked me out and insisted on calling West University 911. First responders were there in minutes and in a few more I was in Methodist hospital. The ER doctors made a split-second decision to put me on ECMO, the most advanced form of life support and Methodist happened to have one available. Break any link in that chain, and I'm not writing this post. To my daughter Alicia. To the City of West University Place first responders. To my Houston Methodist team: Dr. Joe Galati, Dr. David S. Baskin, Dr. Charu Bavare, and Dr. Abdul-jabbar khan. To the TIRR Memorial Hermann team who got me back on my feet, to every professional who cared for me and most of all to my family and friends who supported me along the way. Thank you will never be enough. Four years later, here is what I carry with me. Take care of your body and pay attention to it. Doctors said I was able to survive 13 days on life support because I was in excellent physical shape. But, I stubbornly ignored warning signals that could have prevented the initial surgery I had. As a side note, I just completed my 350th Orange Theory exercise class. Never take one day for granted especially living in this country, with all the freedoms and opportunities we have. Cherish your family and friends - they will be there when you need them. Find a purpose. I was given a second chance for a reason. I decided I’m not going to retire anytime soon. As long as Rice Business lets me teach, I'll teach the next generation of entrepreneurs. As long as I can help an entrepreneur start, buy, or sell a business, I'll be there and I will always support our military veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms. Every July 11th, I stop and take stock of the time I've been given. I hope you don't need an alive day to do the same.

Al Danto shared thisWhat an inspiring day celebrating my son-in-law’s citizenship ceremony, one of nearly 1,500 people from 88 countries who officially became U.S. citizens, including a 90 year old! Amidst the tears and appreciation, all I could think about was how alive the American dream still is today. What an inspiration to see people who waited years, worked hard, and never took this country for granted, completing their long, arduous journey. Congratulations and thanks for the reminder that the American dream is still alive today

Al Danto shared thisI’m grateful to have had the freedom to be a life long entrepreneur, advisor and played a part in making Rice Business the #1 graduate entrepreneurship program in the U.S. in a country that still rewards the bet on yourself. Every student and every alumni's “yes I’m doing this” moment is proof that the promise is still alive. Especially grateful to support our military veterans because without them none of this happens. To our military and veterans: thank you for protecting that dream and giving us entrepreneurs the freedom to dream big. Happy Independence Day and never take what we have in this country for granted.

Al Danto shared thisI make it a habit to talk to every Uber driver I meet. Their stories typically never disappoint. Have you had any experiences like this? Today, two rides reminded me why the American Dream is far from dead. My driver to the airport was Korean. I noticed diapers in his trunk. He said his 8-year-old has special needs and still requires them. He and his wife immigrated here specifically to access the best medical care available. His day starts at 4:30 AM picking up Uber rides, then shifts to his job at a local army base, and rarely ends before 6 PM. No complaints. Just quiet, determined love for his family. My driver home from the airport was Afghan. He spent years as a translator, going on harrowing combat patrols alongside U.S. troops. In return, he earned a special visa. And when he finally arrived in America, the very veterans he served beside showed up for him by helping him find his footing in a new country. Two men. Two completely different journeys representing one shared belief: that if you work hard enough, our country will give you a chance. The American Dream is never a guarantee, but it’s still alive in the hands of people willing to earn it and apreciate it. Al Danto liked thisAl Danto liked thisOver a year ago, I was accepted into grad school at Rice University. At the same time, my family was navigating one of the hardest transitions of our lives. My younger sisters and I were losing our parents as they returned to Mexico, and we were adjusting to a future that suddenly looked very different. As someone whose own future in the only country I've ever known has felt uncertain, I started questioning whether pursuing this master's degree was the right choice. So I rescinded my acceptance to Rice. Then, that same day two strangers asked me to join a Zoom call. It was 6pm, I was winding down for the day, and I joined ready to stand my ground. In my stubbornness, nothing was going to change my mind. As soon as I got on the call, a student began giving me a long, passionate speech about perseverance and not giving up on myself. I was floored; it was beautiful, to say the least. The program also expressed that they would support me however they could. It was strange to feel that level of care from strangers, but I knew right then this was a community I needed to be part of. Almost four semesters later, after juggling full-time work, school, family responsibilities, and everything else life has brought, I had the privilege of presenting my research at the AGLSP National Conference at Southern Methodist University this past week. Another milestone my family and I could never have imagined. This year's conference theme was "New Beginnings," and I couldn't think of a more fitting theme. Presenting my research on access to education reminded me just how much can change when someone believes in you and gives you the chance to keep going. It was also pretty amazing getting to read a creative writing piece during the open mic. Those two strangers who changed my trajectory that evening have become people I trust deeply. And the community they welcomed me into is strong, loving, and full of thoughtful and inspiring people. I'm incredibly grateful that I answered that Zoom call. Thank you Paulina Vieitez and Rebecca Sharp! As our program director, Rebecca, once said: motion requires more than curiosity. It requires the decision to act. And acting on curiosity often takes courage. Ideas move. People grow. Possibilities expand. And together, we keep each other in motion. I'm endlessly thankful for everyone I've gotten to learn and grow with and for everyone who believed in me before I believed in myself. I can't wait to cross the finish line later this year.

Over the past two weeks, I've had the opportunity to develop Mela through the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Pathfinder Program at Rice Business. It has been an incredible experience turning an idea into a venture through customer discovery, mentorship, and pitching. Last night, I had the opportunity to officially present Mela which is a platform helping small businesses make more confident decisions when choosing local vendor events. One of the highlights of last night (other than the launch of course) was meeting Frank Liu, the namesake and benefactor of the Liu Idea Lab, and having the opportunity to pitch Mela to him. Receiving his questions, feedback, and even a hypothetical funding offer made for an unforgettable entrepreneurial experience. A huge thank you to Nicholaus Tucker, Antonio Cordova, Ph.D., and the entire Lilie team for creating such an incredible program and for your guidance, encouragement, and support throughout this journey. I'm also grateful to everyone who shared thoughtful feedback and made this experience so rewarding. Al Danto liked thisAl Danto liked this7 years ago I quit my high-paying job at a Fortune 500 company. Everyone thought I'd gone crazy. On paper, the job looked really good. Great pay, a leadership program, rotating through different roles every few months, and a guaranteed paycheck for two or three years while I figured out what I actually wanted to do. But more and more I kept catching myself thinking: "Is this really it?" I'd felt this in the Army too. A lot of my day just ended up blindly following rules and blanket policies written for thousands of people. I didn't want to be stuck in that. So I made a bet on myself. Which seems crazy looking back because we were expecting a new baby, had almost nothing in savings, and definitely didn’t have a back up plan. But I bought a small company with my business partner. We started at Holland Supply Company in 2019 with 9 employees. We made a ton of mistakes early on, some of them more than once. And I spent that whole first year questioning my decision. Now 7 years later the company has grown to almost 100 employees and we have the fastest lead times in the business for utility companies needing measurement and regulation products. Building this business is still one of the best decisions I ever made. I realized I wasn't built to follow someone else's rulebook. I wanted to build something that was actually mine. And the funny thing is, now we're big enough that I'm writing those same blanket policies I tried to get away from. Definitely didn't see that one coming. But now I get to decide what those policies look like so we can make sure we’re taking care of our people. Just another reason I’m so glad I took the leap.
