Alexa von Tobel, CFP®, is the Founder and Managing Partner of Inspired Capital, a $900M Pre-Seed to Series A venture fund backing fearless founders solving the hardest challenges facing humanity. In addition, Alexa is the New York Times-Bestselling Author of Financially Fearless and Financially Forward, and she hosts Inc.'s weekly entrepreneurship podcast, The Founders Project.
Prior to Inspired Capital, Alexa founded LearnVest in 2008 with the goal of helping people make progress on their money. After raising nearly $75 million in venture capital, LearnVest was acquired by Northwestern Mutual in May 2015 in one of the biggest fintech acquisitions of the decade. Following the acquisition, von Tobel joined the management team of Northwestern Mutual as the company’s first-ever Chief Digital Officer, overseeing digital strategy. She later assumed the role of Chief Innovation Officer through which she oversaw Northwestern Mutual’s venture arm.
Alexa has appeared on the cover of Forbes Magazine, been interviewed on NPR’s How I Built This and been featured in a wide variety of publications from The New York Times to Vogue. She is a member of the 2016 Class of Henry Crown Fellows and an inaugural member of President Obama’s Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship. Alexa has been honored with numerous recognitions including: Fortune’s 40 Under 40, Fortune's Most Powerful Women, Forbes’ 30 Under 30, Inc. Magazine's 30 Under 30 and World Economic Forum's Young Global Leader.
Originally from Florida, Alexa attended Harvard College and Harvard Business School before settling in New York City where she currently resides with her husband and their three children.

We are proud to share that Teamshares is going public, beginning to trade on the Nasdaq under TMS via a business combination with Live Oak Acquisition Corporation, and we could not be more proud to have backed this exceptional team since 2020. When we first met co-founders Michael Sutherland Brown, Alex Eu, and Kevin Rikio Shiiba, they were a five-person team with one acquisition closed and a 200-year plan. What set them apart was not just the vision. It was that they had already gone and lived inside the problem they were solving, buying and running eight small businesses themselves before ever pitching a single investor. That foundation has driven everything since. Alexa von Tobel shared thisOne of my favorite memories of Michael Sutherland Brown is from the day Mark Batsiyan and I decided to invest in Teamshares. We were at Newsbar Cafe, and as we wrapped up, he looked me in the eyes and said that I would one day wish I had given him $10 million instead of $3 million. His conviction in himself and his co-founders was palpable, and we trusted his commitment to his journey. I have had dozens of conversations with Michael over the years, and what has struck me every single time is the same thing: he has never once lost the thread of why he is doing this. Not through COVID. Not through a brutal credit environment. Not through all the unglamorous work of acquiring and running nearly 100 small businesses. The mission has always been the same. As someone who built a company around the belief that financial access changes lives, watching Teamshares create real ownership for everyday workers is something I find genuinely moving. Teamshares is now public on the Nasdaq under TMS via a business combination with Live Oak Acquisition Corp. V. Michael will be the first to say this is still the first inning. Today, they're announcing a $200M Series B at a $2.2B valuation to change the world of defense for the better. Drone threats are growing faster than traditional defense systems can meet them. Commercially available drones have become one of the most urgent national security challenges of our time, and the existing solutions are expensive, scarce, and hard to scale. That's exactly the problem ACS is solving. Bullfrog, their AI-powered autonomous weapon station, is already deployed with the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, and has demonstrated a 100% success rate at T-REX 26-1, one of the Department of Defense's premier counter-drone testing events. PE Boards as a Differentiator (for portfolio companies) If you heard the Shore Capital episode on "Invest Like the Best" podcast - there is one interesting insight for PE firms. Board Composition: - each board is built like a sports team with complementary skills - operators, VOC, adjacent sector experts This is a true differentiator because most boards are not intentionally built like a high-performing sports team. Also, there is one particular operator profile every B2B portfolio company should have on its board: a GTM expert (i.e. former CRO). All B2B portfolio company board discussions consistently focus on sales and revenue growth, making this one of the most impactful board roles. All top decile PE firms have a GTM expert in-house as an Operating Partner specializing in GTM who joins board meetings to spot upside opportunities and help see around corners and mitigate risks. P.S. Relating to the GTM, sales, and growth side, there’s a well-known story about Michael Ovitz serving on the board of Gulfstream Aerospace while it was owned by the PE firm Forstmann Little & Co. Michael Ovitz said that he and other board members, like Colin Powell, were so focused on GTM they even got on the phone to help sell jets. It was an entirely GTM-focused board which helped turn around Gulfstream. #pe #privateequity

Boards are supposed to help founders. Over the past 19 years, I've watched many trap them instead. As companies scale, many boards turn from insight to oversight and stop doing what founders actually need: Help making big, hard decisions. Early boards tend to be small, the board members are close to the business and highly invested in it. They argue from first principles. They help founders think. Later-stage boards often look more impressive on paper - they have more independent directors, committees and process. Somewhere along the way, collective problem solving gets replaced with oversight. The board shifts from helping the CEO make better decisions to monitoring decisions that have already been made. Strategy discussions get safer, real debate gets rarer and meetings become more about risk management than judgment. This usually coincides with the introduction of more professional board members. For better or worse, they often optimize for governance, optics, and liability management. That’s their job. But it’s not always what the company needs in moments of real uncertainty. Then, CEOs stop using them as thought partners. That’s a problem. So what should founders do? A few principles that help: • Keep the board as small as you can for as long as you can • Add directors for new insight they bring, not what boxes they check • Treat board seats like senior hires, not trophies • Design meetings for debate rather than reporting • Be explicit about when you want input vs approval Good boards should improve decision-making. If your board isn’t making you think harder, it’s probably not doing its job.
