And for what?Alex Malcoci shared thisImagine a $100m VC fund. They invest $1m into your startup for a 20% ownership stake. You use that money wisely, hit profitability and decide you don’t need to raise more money. 10 years later, you sell your business for $30m. You still own 80% of the company and walk away with $24m. For you, the founder, this is a life-changing triumph. Now, here's the VC’s ledger: - Company Sale Price: $30m - VC Ownership: 20% - Cash returned to VC: $6m - VC Goal: $300m (assume 3x+ target return on $100m) - Progress toward goal: 2% Even though you built a healthy business, your success only moved the needle by 2% for the VC. From their perspective, the time and space you took in their portfolio was “wasted” because you didn’t have the potential to return the fund. This is why VCs push founders to go “big or bust.” They would rather you take a 90% risk of going bankrupt trying to become a $1bn “unicorn” than settle for a 90% chance of becoming a $30m business. In the VC model, a $30m exit and a $0 exit look almost exactly the same. This is why the "raise once and done" or "seedstrapping" approach doesn't work for VCs. But, that doesn't mean it won't work for other types of investors. Or, does it?

That’s how much a new client would have lost out on if they had pushed ahead with manufacturing the second batch of their product without a design review. We didn’t redesign the enclosure, the circuit board, or the packaging - in fact we deliberately wanted zero investment, pure profit savings. No re-tooling, no re-certification, no risk. By diving into the BOM we identified an internal cable that was massively overspecified. Swapping this one cable saved $3.40 a unit - in fact, even if we had just changed distributor we would have save over a dollar. The client is running 1,000 units, so that one cable swap contributes to a massive $3400 profit boost. The only painful part? They had already manufactured 500 units before finding us. Across the whole BOM that meant over $2000 had gone up in smoke. This doesn’t mean the original design team failed in their brief. Choosing a premium cable is the price of certainty and speed, and in physical product development those two things can be worth a high price. "Design for Prototype" and "Design for Manufacture" are different sports, and this can be really challenging to communicate. We often design with manufacture in mind at the prototyping stage, but you can’t skip DFM. Optimise too early and you might slow down development, don’t optimise at all and you are leaving money on the BOM. You don’t always need to redesign the product from the ground up to improve your margins. Sometimes all it takes is swapping a cable.

Hellbender Inc. raised $12.5M in seed funding co-led by Magarac Venture Partners and Veredas Partners to scale U.S. manufacturing and launch a new line of edge AI cameras. The Pittsburgh company builds integrated perception systems for machines that need to see, reason and act without sending everything to the cloud. I've figured out a consistent way to put my product photos into quality backgrounds in less than 30 seconds every time. They key is getting an image scene prompt that I can paste with my product photo. All I do is find a product that I like the background or aesthetics of, and ask Gemini or ChatGPT to describe the background aesthetics in an image prompt for me. Then I copy the image prompt, and have the same AI put my product image in the prompt that it just wrote. By doing this, Gemini is now coming up with aspects of the background by itself, rather than placing other graphics into this photo. Meaning, it's going to generate the other elements without fail, and give you a clean aesthetic background. I cannot believe how simple it can be to get a good picture for my simple 3D printed product today! How do you get good product photos?
