Alex Hill shared thisAwesome!Alex Hill shared this//HOW PANAMA CANAL WORKS? EXCELLENT ENGINEERING! #Engineering & #Innovation at its finest! Why raise the boat only to lower it again? Wouldn't it have been easier to remove any existing sediment below the water to flatten it out and then avoid the need for locks? This question was the subject of intense debates before building the canal. However, there are nearly 100 miles of mostly volcanic rock to cut through - not sediment. A French company made a disastrous attempt at cutting straight through in the late 1800s and went bankrupt (and lost 22,000 workers) trying it. The current design “floats” the boats about 85 feet above sea level and over the rocky land between the oceans. The kicker? No pumps! It’s driven by upland river runoff above the top level of the canal, gravity fed by the ample rainfall in the area. Fun fact: The cost of cutting and excavating to the extent to make the lake bed the same level as the sea bed would be an extremely difficult task relative to maintaining the all locks. What most people also don’t know: In Panama Canal, the ship is elevated 85 feet above sea level to the lake level. Also, a sea-level canal would allow an interchange of incompatible sea life. The Pacific is much colder than the Caribbean at those latitudes.
