Alyssa London shared thisIt was such a pleasure meeting Yakama Nation Veterans Day Powwow Jr. Queen Jonii Walsey. It was one of my favorite moments of the day. Meeting young people who are growing up proud of who they are, wearing their regalia with confidence, and representing their Nations fills me with joy and hope. One of the greatest gifts of gatherings like the Seafair Powwow is seeing culture passed from one generation to the next. Not in a museum or a history book, but in real life. Seeing young Indigenous leaders embrace their cultures with such pride is one of the most inspiring parts of these gatherings. Regalia, language, songs, dance, and leadership don’t just exist in history. They live through the next generation. Every time I meet young people like Jonii, I see living evidence that our Indigenous cultures are thriving and that the future is in good hands.

Seeing the audiobook listed on these platforms makes this project feel even more real. What started as an idea has become a manuscript, then page proofs, and now it’s beginning to appear where readers and listeners will eventually find it. I’m grateful to everyone who has helped bring this book to life, including the team at HarperCollins, Harper Celebrate, HarperOne, and UTA Publishing. Alyssa London shared thisThis Fourth of July, I’m reflecting on what it means to be both an American and a Tlingit citizen. Those two identities don’t compete with one another. They remind us that, as we celebrate 250 years of the United States, the story of this land did not begin in 1776. Long before the founding of the United States, Indigenous Nations had governments, laws, languages, cultures, economies, diplomacy, and relationships with these lands that continue today. As we commemorate this milestone, I hope we also acknowledge the first Peoples of this land and the sovereign Tribal Nations whose histories, responsibilities, and contributions predate the United States and continue to shape its future. We are not relics of the past. We are still protecting our homelands. We are still governing our Nations. We are still creating, leading, and contributing to the future of this country. Today, I smiled when I saw the words “We Are Still Here” appearing across so many Indigenous organizations’ Fourth of July posts. They’re also the title of my forthcoming book with HarperCollins. We Are Still Here isn’t simply a statement of survival. It’s a reminder that Indigenous Peoples have always been part of America’s story, and we remain part of its future. I’m proud of many of the people, ideals, and possibilities this country represents, even as I recognize there is still much work to do. Happy Fourth of July. 🇺🇸

For generations, Native Peoples have defended their inherent rights, treaty rights, homelands, cultures, languages, and ways of life. Their histories long predate the founding of the United States, and their sovereignty has always existed. Today, we honor the Native leaders, warriors, veterans, elders, and advocates who continue to protect their communities and uphold the sacred responsibility to future generations. Sovereignty is not a gift. It is inherent. It is sacred. It is enduring.

The next 250 years can continue the patterns that produced environmental degradation, inequality, broken relationships, and distrust. Or they can embrace principles Native Nations have carried since time immemorial: responsibility, reciprocity, stewardship, and respect for future generations. Native Nations are still here. We are still speaking our languages. Still protecting our homelands. Still exercising our sovereignty. Still carrying forward our responsibilities. After 250 years, the question is no longer whether Native Nations will survive. The question is whether America is ready to learn from the Peoples it once tried to erase. Everything Back. Everything Forward.

We talked about his journey from growing up in Alaska, to studying mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan, to becoming an audio engineer, performer, radio host and interviewer helping Indigenize the airwaves at Daybreak Star Radio. One of my favorite parts of interviewing people is hearing the unexpected paths that bring them to where they are today. Jermaine’s story is a reminder that careers don’t have to fit into a single box. You can be an engineer, an artist, a storyteller, and a community builder all at once. From a Yup’ik village in Alaska to Michigan, Seattle, and beyond, his journey is a great example of what’s possible when you’re willing to pursue more than one dream. Sharing a few reflections from the workshop below.Alyssa London shared thisThis weekend I had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop on Leadership Communication, Executive Presence, and Public Speaking for Native Action Network’s Advocacy Boot Camp Cohort 5. Together, we explored communication not as performance, but as leadership through discussion, reflection, a participant workbook I designed, and speaking practice. We talked about preparation as an act of respect. We practiced telling leadership stories that build relationships rather than simply listing accomplishments. And we challenged ourselves to think less about, “How do I sound impressive?” and more about, “How can I serve the people in front of me?” One of the highlights of the day was watching participants encourage one another, step outside their comfort zones, and discover greater confidence in their own voices. One of the biggest ideas we kept returning to was this: People don’t experience our intentions. They experience our communication. Many people think leadership communication begins when we stand up to speak. I believe it begins much earlier. It begins with how we prepare, how we listen, how we regulate our nervous system before we’re under pressure, and how we build trust through everyday conversations. Thank you to Jami Barney, Teresa Iyall-Williams, Iris Friday, Claudia Kauffman, and the incredible women of Cohort 5 for welcoming me into this experience. It was an honor to learn alongside you. Helping leaders find their voice, and communicate with greater clarity, confidence, and intention, is some of the most meaningful work I get to do. Jeff Landfield My post wasn’t arguing that Indigenous societies were without flaws. It was simply recognizing that Indigenous Nations had complex governments, laws, cultures, and histories long before 1776 and continue to exist today.

"It has taken four years to complete, with many visits to the East Coast. These two institutions have proven to be a rewarding endeavor. They learned from us, they listened. It did not come without conflict and hard conversations, but ultimately, they did the right thing. Alyssa London reacted on thisEternally grateful to the Yakama Nation 🙏Alyssa London reacted on thisYakama Nation honors Gabe Galanda for dedicated service By Carol Craig Yakama Nation Review TOPPENISH, Wash. – With office location in Seattle, Gabe Galanda is managing lawyer at Galanda Broadman, PLLC, who’s firm works on indigenous rights. Galanda worked for 20 years on legal issues for the Yakama Nation. He is from the Round Valley Tribe in California, descending from the Nomlaki and Concow peoples. “Today Gabe is here with his two co-horts, and the tribe wants to thank them for the many years of service for the Yakama Nation. From the first time they spent with us to today, we are good friends indeed,” said YNTC Chairman Gerald L. Lewis July 9. His work for the tribe spans treaty rights litigation to protect and enforce the right guaranteed under the 1855 Treaty, economic rights advocacy including land and resource rights, human rights defense, particularly for incarcerated tribal individuals and community-based initiatives through Huy, which supports healing and justice for the Yakama community. Another court case was Cougar Den v. Wash. in 2017, which affirmed the Yakama Treaty right to travel and trade thus striking down state fuel import taxes. Galanda, 49, said he was honored to be in the tribal chambers. “We’ve been representing and defending the Yakama Nation for 20 years. At least 20 years since I got a call from Chair Jerry Meninick,” he said. He named the several chairmen he has served. “It has been one of greatest privileges and an honor to work with chairmen, Cloud, Meninick, Saluskin, Lewis, his brother Virgil, and Sampson,” he said as he looked around the chambers. “We’ve had many great victories along the way. The US v. Smiskin case where the district court dismissed the government’s indictment charging tribal members Kato Smiskin and Harry Smiskin with violations of the federal Contraband Cigarette Trafficking Act.” The Yakama Treaty right to travel with Yakama v. Holder. There were many significant fights on behalf of YN. In 2010, the tribe filed lawsuit with a district court to block shipment of 20,000 tons of waste from Hawaii to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill that lies on ancestral Yakama lands. Galanda had admiration and respect for Athena Sanchey-Yallup on council at the time.
