Companies don't wake up one morning and suddenly lose their edge. More often, it's a series of small shifts. Customers become more cautious, competitors change the conversation, buying priorities evolve, or the market simply moves faster than expected. That's why I've always believed product marketing is about much more than launching products... It's about making sure your company stays connected to what customers actually value today, not what they valued last year. Every earnings surprise is a reminder that technology alone isn't enough. Even great products need the right positioning, clear messaging, and a compelling story that resonates with buyers in a changing market. The lesson is relevant to every technology company, not just IBM. From my experience, the companies that successfully create categories typically do three things: 1. They reframe the problem – they identify a hidden cost, unmet need, or market shift that others have overlooked. 2. They introduce a new way of thinking – they create the frameworks, language, and metrics that help buyers understand the problem differently. 3. They make their solution the natural answer – their product becomes synonymous with the category they created. This was our playbook when I worked at BigBand Networks, an innovative network equipment vendor in the cable television space. But category creation is, however, about more than just clever positioning and messaging, and requires: 🔹A compelling narrative. 🔹Consistent market education. 🔹Alignment across product, marketing, sales, and leadership. Too many companies try to win by explaining why they are better. Category creators win by helping customers understand why the old way of thinking is no longer enough. I've watched marketing teams spend weeks developing a webinar, research report, customer story, or thought leadership article, only to publish it once, promote it briefly, and then move on to creating something new before the original asset has delivered anywhere close to its full value. This is a mistake. The most effective marketing teams approach content very differently because they recognize that the value of an idea is not determined by the effort required to create it, but by how many relevant audiences ultimately encounter it. Instead of treating every asset as a one-time event, they treat every asset as the starting point for a broader distribution strategy that extends across multiple channels, formats, and audiences. 🔹A webinar can become a series of video clips, a blog article, social media posts, sales enablement content, and email campaigns. 🔹A customer success story can support demand generation, product marketing, customer marketing, and sales conversations. 🔹A research report can generate weeks or even months of content that reaches prospects through entirely different channels. The goal is to maximize the reach, lifespan, and impact of the ideas that are already being created, not simply produce more content. This matters because buyers rarely discover a company's message through a single touchpoint. In many ways, modern marketing has evolved from a content creation challenge into a content distribution challenge, and the companies that understand that distinction are often the ones that generate the greatest awareness, engagement, and momentum. Many of us assumed the story would end there... Instead, Lime outlasted the hype cycle, survived a pandemic, weathered industry consolidation, and watched competitors disappear. That resilience has now culminated in a public listing valued at roughly $1.7 billion. David Ronald shared thisOne of the fastest ways for a product organization to lose momentum is to allow every request to become a top priority. Yes, every request may have merit, and they can all seem important. The challenge is deciding which ideas deserve attention now. In my experience, a few practices can make prioritization significantly more effective: 1. Establish a clear connection between product investments and business objectives – when teams understand the company's strategic priorities, it becomes much easier to evaluate which initiatives deserve attention and which can wait. 2. Evaluate opportunities through the lens of customer impact – the most valuable initiatives are often the ones that solve meaningful problems for a significant portion of your customer base rather than addressing isolated requests. 3. Create a consistent decision-making framework that applies equally to every request – when all initiatives are evaluated using the same criteria, prioritization becomes more objective and less influenced by organizational politics. 4. Quantify expected outcomes whenever possible – understanding the potential impact on revenue, retention, adoption, customer satisfaction, or operational efficiency helps teams make more informed decisions. 5. Make tradeoffs visible – every new initiative requires resources that could be invested elsewhere, and stakeholders should understand what is being delayed or deprioritized when a new project is approved. When people understand how decisions are made, alignment improves, execution becomes more focused, and product teams spend less time debating priorities and more time delivering meaningful outcomes. Let's be clear. When your story changes depending on who is speaking, prospects spend more time trying to understand what you do than evaluating whether they should buy from you. The strongest companies don't just create messaging. They create alignment around messaging. Here are 5 ways to make that happen: 🔹 Build a clear foundation - align on the customer problem, market category, and why you win before debating words and taglines. 🔹Create a messaging architecture - a core narrative, supporting pillars, and proof points give every team a framework for telling the same story at different levels of detail. 🔹Make it a cross-functional process - product, marketing, sales, and executives each see different parts of the customer journey. Your messaging is stronger when those perspectives are reflected. 🔹Test your messaging with customers and analysts - internal alignment is important, but external validation is what matters most. 🔹Treat messaging as a living system - messaging should be reviewed and refined regularly rather than treated as a one-time exercise because products evolve, customer needs shift, and markets change. David Ronald shared thisI've seen too many companies making the same mistake. They hire growth marketers to generate leads before they've figured out what they actually want the market to understand. So, the team creates content, builds landing pages, and launches campaigns and, when results fall short, the assumption is usually that the problem lies in execution. Most of the time, it doesn't. The real issue is that nobody has clearly defined the story: 🔹What is your ICP and who is your ideal buyer? 🔹What problem does your product solve for your buyer? 🔹Why is it better than the alternatives? 🔹Why should a buyer care right now? Those aren't campaign questions… They're product marketing questions. That's why I've always believed product marketing should be one of the first marketing hires a company makes. Without a clear position in the market and messaging that resonates with customers, every other marketing effort becomes more difficult. Demand generation, content marketing, events, social media, and paid advertising all perform better when they're built on a strong foundation. Product marketing provides that foundation by translating product capabilities into customer value and ensuring every team is telling the same story. The best marketing campaigns I've seen succeeded because the message was clear, relevant, and targeted. I firmly believe that when companies get the story right first, everything else becomes easier. And I'm not just talking about geography. Location provides context. Consider two people with the same job title at similar companies. And often, the way they make buying decisions is different too. What's interesting is that AI and modern analytics now make it possible to understand how location influences behavior, interests, timing, and intent. We've had a Cube dbt Python package for a while to help sync dbt models into Cube, but it required a lot of setup and had limited functionality. I'm excited to bring the integration to the next level. Data modeling naturally comes in layers, and dbt is always a layer upstream from Cube. That layering is the foundation for the new integration. We now turn your dbt models into the base layer of the Cube data model, and let the data team build semantic models in Cube on top of it. When you change your dbt model, you can bring those changes into the Cube base layer automatically from a CI/CD trigger. Today we're releasing just one direction — getting models from dbt into Cube — but we envision this as bidirectional. It happens often: a measure or dimension starts in exploration, moves into the Cube data model, and at some point it becomes evident it belongs upstream in dbt. We want to make that flow seamless, and it's what we're working on next. Mikhail Nitsenko, our product engineer behind this feature, wrote an excellent blog post walking through it. Over the years, this region was invaded no less than 8 times starting with the Romans to the Greeks to the Venetians ending with the breakup of Yugoslavia resulting in the independent state of Croatian in June of 1991. In 1991, they had #ERP but it was client server and very rudimentary. It is a much different environment now with #AI. The temptation is to chase the next initiative, the next technology, or the next quick win. Activity alone doesn’t create sustainable growth A strong foundation creates alignment. Alignment enables execution. Execution creates learning. Learning drives continuous improvement. Later in the book, I wrote: “Sustainable growth is not something you achieve once. It is something you continuously build.” Growth isn’t a project. It’s a capability an organization builds together. The organizations that continue to grow won’t be the ones doing the most.
