They're not scrolling LinkedIn job boards. They're not updating their resumes. They're making money. So if you're relying solely on job postings to build your sales team, you're fishing in a pond with 11% of the talent. Here's what most companies miss: The best sales reps don't need to look for opportunities, opportunities need to find them. They're too busy hitting 150% of quota, building pipelines, and earning commission checks that make them very comfortable staying put. This is where a specialized headhunter changes the game. Buyer: We need about 100 seats, can you share pricing with us? Rep: You bet, at that volume it's $1400 a seat, so $140,000. 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑 I've heard this on discovery calls 1000 times - we get a direct ask on pricing and we give a direct answer. Or worse, we dance around it and don't answer because we've been taught to withhold price until we can prove value. But telling a buyer "Poof, you need 140K, thx!" is rarely the right answer. Instead, here's my script: "You bet! A quick note that we have a ten-seat minimum for starters, and that's at $1600 a seat. So, worst case, we could start you there. However, we have discounting tiers that kick in at 25, 50 and 100 seats, with 100 being $1400/license. In addition, we have discounts that we can add in if we can look at a multi-year agreement. All that to say, there are a few directions we can go to get you started with us and also to give you the best rate." 1. Be honest about where the buyer can start. 16K can earn you the opportunity to keep talking and prove value on that and future calls. 2. Be transparent about your price - if you have a minimum threshold on seats, price, or size of engagement, be honest and save everyone the hassle and time if it's not a fit. If they need one seat and you can't sell less than ten, tell them to buy online or let them find nine friends - don't burn multiple calls only to disappoint you both. 3. Talk about discounts (and competitors) early. I've never shied away from telling buyers exactly how they can reduce their price with us - it's not artificial discounting, it's things that are in their control. The average AE tenure is 2.4 years. (Bridge Group) That sounds like enough time, right? Well… Subtract ramp - typically 4 to 6 months - and you’re already down to under 2 years of full productivity. Now subtract the time it actually takes a great AE to get truly dialed in on a new product, market, and ICP. You’re left with a very short window of peak performance. Here’s what I’ve seen consistently, both as an AE and as a manager: Even the best reps - people who’ve crushed it before, who know how to sell, who hit the ground running - take 12 to 18 months in a new seat before they start performing at a really high and consistent level. Not because they’re slow. Because the job is harder than it looks from the outside. Learning a new product deeply enough to sell it convincingly takes time. Building real pipeline from scratch takes time. Understanding which deals are worth chasing and which aren’t - that’s pattern recognition, and it only comes from reps in your specific market, with your specific buyer, at your specific price point. There are no shortcuts. The problem is that most companies - and most reps - don’t account for this. Companies get impatient at month 6. Reps start second-guessing themselves at month 9. And somewhere around month 12, right when things are starting to click, someone makes a bad decision. The rep leaves for a “fresh start.” The company lets someone go who was 3 months away from becoming a top performer. And the whole cycle starts over. If you’re an AE who’s newer in seat and not where you want to be yet - that’s not necessarily a red flag. It might just mean you’re exactly where you should be. If you’re a sales leader reading this - protect your reps long enough to actually find out what they’re capable of. The ones who look average at month 9 are sometimes your best performers at month 18. It‘s easy to judge solely on attainment on a spreadsheet. Harder to judge based on relevant inputs, mentality, and learning curve. What’s your experience been - how long did it take you to really hit your stride at a new company?

GTM hiring in the U.S. feels different in 2025. Companies aren’t just looking for “quota carriers” anymore — they’re looking for sellers and leaders who can actually drive growth in a tough market. At the same time, the best candidates are asking sharper questions: ⏺️ Is there real product–market fit? ⏺️ What’s the leadership vision and runway? ⏺️ Will I be set up to succeed, or just filling a quota gap? This is where most GTM searches stall out — the expectations on both sides are higher than ever! The market for Enterprise Saas Sales people feels really hot right now. But not for all Enterprise Saas people....But why ? There are ample companies looking to hire Saas Sales people right now in Chicago and the West Coast - BUT these companies, at least the ones we are working with - are very , very picky. And they are correct for being picky . I am personally recruiting for 4 PreIPO UNICORNS looking for 'A' players in Chicago / Wisconsin. These companies are all well funded, growing like crazy and are trying to keep it that way. The theme for all of them is pretty much the same : 1) They want HUNTERS - proven and comfortable building pipeline 2) Performers- people that seem to get it done consistently regardless of the circumstances 3)They DO NOT want people that have moved around. It almost doesn't matter the reasons, they wont even look at someone with 3 roles in 5 yrs etc etc 4) They want people coming from similar companies whenever possible but this is the least important criteria. This is why many candidates feel that the market is tight. They may not have these 4 attributes at the moment and they aren't getting the looks from hiring managers. The good news is that there are plenty of companies that would be interested in those candidates. But the companies that pay Headhunters to find the exact fit they are looking for just are not interested. Our clients keep us focused on very specific criteria and if you don't meet that we really won't have many options to get you into some of these companies. No advice coming, just a lay of the land in the Saas Sales recruiting market in Chicago/Wisc and West Coast.
