Five years ago, I gave this talk at UNBOUND: Purpose-Driven SEO
If I gave that same talk today, half the room would walk out.
Not because the SEO fundamentals were wrong. They still hold.
Because the playing field around them got bigger.
Every year I return to speak at UNBOUND, more of marketing gets folded into the search conversation.
Here’s how my Unbound topics evolved over the years:
* Purpose-driven SEO (2021)
* How great brands scale SEO (2022)
* SEO for revenue, not rankings (2023)
* Beyond CRO: Convert more organic customers (2024)
* Zero-click SEO Conversion Strategies (2025)
Each of these talks reflected where search was at that moment.
Today my message would be broader.
I wouldn't stop at rankings, traffic growth, or other channel optimization metrics. I'd focus on proving the value of visibility across every channel by connecting it to financial metrics.
We're entering a time where many of the metrics marketers have relied on for two decades are harder to read on their own.
We're in a new reality.
Reality #1: The buying journey is fragmented.
AI search filters traffic by intent before users ever visit your website. The whole funnel can now happen inside a single conversation with AI and some brands are seeing branded search rise as organic clicks drop.
Reality #2: Attribution got harder.
There's no Search Console for ChatGPT. We can't see our customers’ conversations or AI recommendations happening inside AI platforms.
But harder attribution isn't the same as broken attribution.
We can still measure it through leading indicators, lift studies, and by asking the question: "How did you hear about us?"
We know our customers are using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI tools to discover brands, evaluate solutions, and make purchasing decisions.
So what's the answer?
Stop treating rankings and clicks as the finish line.
Your CMO, CEO, and CFO can’t make business decisions based on channel metrics. They care about revenue. They care about pipeline. They care about new customers.
So show them the momentum first, the leading indicators that build trust, then tie it to the bottom line.
A competitor's page that shows ~40 organic visits per month sounds worthless to a CFO. "$12M of pipeline influenced by a competing brand’s page" does not. Same page, different language.
The future of marketing measurement isn't proving that rankings improved or traffic grew.
It's proving that visibility across channels influences revenue growth, even when the click never happens.
