Barrons conducted an incredible analysis of content from brands (shareholder letters, investor calls, news releases, etc.) and found a MASSIVE uptick in "It's not X, it's y" phrasing. One of the telltale signs of outsourcing your content to AI. The risk here is obvious: First, when you outsource your content and comms to AI, you sound like everyone else, painfully undifferentiated as a brand. Second, it's a clear signal to investors and customers that you don't have a strong conviction or point of view on your company or industry. You had to ask ChatGPT or Claude what to think.

A 16-month study of 2,000 AI-generated articles on new websites found that, despite an initial surge, search performance collapsed to next-to-nothing after a few months, and then to nothing at all. Topic somewhat affected the shape of the curve, but they all ended up in the same place. The authors attribute this collapse to the usual SEO reasons: “No backlinks or external validation.” “No authors, credentials, or real-world expertise.” “Much of the content resembled what already exists.” “No internal linking, topical organization, or clear hierarchy.” However, an external expert who read the data summed up the real issue nicely: "No one is going to bookmark, share, subscribe or revisit a site with average content." For me, Women's Equity Lab Manitoba is the perfect example. Before they had even invested, they were already making strategic introductions to retailers and potential partners to help increase Marlow’s distribution. Most recently, after Manitoba passed legislation requiring workplaces to provide free menstrual products, they immediately connected us with organizations looking to create more inclusive workplaces. The best investors don't just write a cheque, they open doors, create opportunities, and become true partners in building the business. Melanie Deziel liked thisMelanie Deziel liked thisSo many people sent me this graphic this week that I guess defending the em dash has become my entire personality... and I’m not mad about it. Maybe you’ve seen this idea expressed here or elsewhere: “As soon as I see an em dash, I stop reading.” Which is—for the love of semicolons—absolutely ridiculous. The em dash has an actual job. It has had one for *literally centuries*. Here’s the two-second test for whether you should assign it to that job in your own content: >>> THE 2-SECOND EM DASH TEST <<< 1. Do you need an interruption, an important aside, a dramatic turn, or a little extra oomph? 2. Does the em dash create a meaningful pause, a turn of thought, contrast, surprise, a human aside, or emphasis the sentence has actually earned? Then (and only then!): Fearlessly use an em dash! * * * The question is not this: “Does this punctuation look like AI?” It’s this: “Is this punctuation doing real work?” A useful em dash is a hinge. It turns the sentence. It mimics our conversational, emotional, sometimes delightfully digressive voices—the kind that wander, like this sentence is doing right now, before plopping into a seat and parking themselves on the page. A lazy em dash creates smoggy slop, spewing robo-nothingness into the atmosphere like a dirty diesel engine. It makes things look dramatic and gross without making them clearer. * * * The em dash—as the starting lineup of Team Punctuation—isn’t just grammar. Punctuation is a kind of wingman to your words: It helps them confidently come alive in someone else’s mind. Like writing itself, punctuation is less about hard and fast rules than it is about rhythm, taste, intention, and sounding unmistakably human. So use the em dash bravely—I beg of you—but make it earn its place. * * * Why do I care so much about a stupid em dash? Why not remove them all and call it a day? Why should *you* care? Because friends: It actually matters. The way we take care of small things is how we take care of big things. The em dash is a small thing. But it’s also one way writers can claw back what’s ours from a technology that has—let’s be honest—already taken quite a bit from us. We can’t push AI back into a box. but we can reclaim what’s rightfully ours. Also, because I HAVE. HAD. IT. The robots do not own the em dash. Get in, loser—we’re taking it back. It was 2020. No conferences, no stages, just a weekly livestream out to LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and — allegedly — Twitch. Nineteen episodes in, we pulled back, rebuilt the whole thing into a pre-recorded seasons format, and kept going. Season 6 of The Tech Humanist Show won a Web Excellence Award. Season 8 tied the show to supporting Helen Keller International. We're in Season 10 now, and 2026 has already roughly doubled our best-ever year. Today's episode lands on our sixth anniversary, and the topic feels right for it: AI governance, with Rebekah Tweed from The Algorithmic Justice League. Six years ago the question was "what does this technology demand that we think about and talk about together." That's still the question. The systems just got bigger and harder to see inside. So here's what's ahead: we're looking back toward our roots to dream about what's next. That means experimenting with formats again — more direct-to-video, me talking through what needs examining in real time, maybe even recording podcast interviews in front of live audiences. (That’s actually a possibility in the works! We’ll keep you updated.) But the instinct that started this show — show up curious and talk through the issues, whether with other people or just me — is the same instinct we have always followed. Melanie Deziel liked thisMelanie Deziel liked thisDo you have that one crazy friend who's always pitching you wild ideas that seem damn near impossible to pull off? I have 7. (At least.) And a few years ago, three of them—Sylvia Brindis, Shane Snow, and Brian Donegan—came to me with a WILD pitch. Shane and Sylvia had just had their first kid, almost at the same exact time as me. Like us, they were freaked out by all the addictive garbage served to kids by the YouTube crack-o-rthm. And they had the idea of creating an indie TV show that was actually good for them. It'd be slow content. It wouldn't rot their brains, and it'd teach them how to think critically about the world through the tools of journalism. They called it Fluff Piece—a show about an intrepid reporter and her adorable dog investigating the rumors about town. An indie TV show is one of the longest shot bets you can make. I immediately invested damn near all my money in it. How could I turn down the chance to bring media literacy and critical thinking to our kids' generation? And today, my best friends have defied the odds. Fluff Piece is making its debut on Amazon! So proud of you guys—along with Erica Duffy, Lily L., Brandon XIV, and the rest of the team. Cannot wait to show this to my son Max when he gets home, and so glad this show is in the world.

Melanie Deziel liked thisMelanie Deziel liked thisI’m writing my next book with a very specific delusional goal to the process: I want to write the Kitchen Confidential of professional speaking. If you haven't read it, Kitchen Confidential is the creative nonfiction book from Anthony Bourdain recounting his adventures working in restaurants as a cook. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge Bourdain fan. (Can't wait to see the A24 movie about his early life next month!) The thing is, my book won't just be my stories. Mine will dot the chapters for sure, but most of the stories will be from other speakers: friends, mentors, heroes, newcomers to my network ... maybe even you. This is a book for actual pros who get it—and anyone who wants to break in or peer in. I also believe this is a missing artifact in the world of public speaking. There are lots of books for beginners, most of which focus on the fear or skill of public speaking. There are lots of books about the theory, covering rhetorical devices and story structure and such. A handful of books also exist to help professional speakers build their businesses, mosts of which are really bad, some of which are okay, and only one of which I recommend routinely, because it's truly great: The Referable Speaker from Michael Port and Andrew Davis But there is no book of stories by the pros, for the pros. I think about it like this: Plenty of books tell you what to do. This book will show you *what it's like.* I want to write a book I'd personally read. A book my friends would read. A book a speaker flying to Scottsdale for another gig would read, laughing and nodding along as they devour each chapter before storing their tray table and putting their seat back in the upright position. I imagine a group of speakers swapping stories in a Vegas green room before someone mentions hearing this story about this speaker in this book. "Oh I've read that! Great book!" Then the others who haven't read it immediately take out their phones. This book will take you past the pablum, showing you what happens in the real world to real speakers. Speakers who are like you, behind you, ahead of you. That is the book I want to write. The book I need to write. I’ll be sharing updates and early access over the next year to my newsletter. The energy and strategic presentation format from each speaker. Every single person who stepped on that stage was excited to do so. Every single speaker spoke to us like a colleague, not a follower. And every single speaker left us with a free tool or framework to implement right away. These are heavy hitters. Advising tech giants, innovating new tech, working across thousands of scaled SMBs, creating categories, studying billions of data points. To get proximity and behind-the-scenes case studies from them is a rare kind of privilege I don't take lightly. 🙏🏾 2. This one’s for New York. The stereotype is true: nobody hustles like a New Yorker 👏🏾 hustles. A range of businesses and performances that never even crossed my mind. As an ambitious person, that’s saying something. The city also made me appreciate my home and family..what I’ve built..that much more. 3. The venue was giving high-end Manhattan real estate. Thank you Willow Mack for spoiling us. 4. Amanda J.’s talk on Local SEO will be legendary from this event. Heard so much good feedback from Local SEOs touting this as their favorite of the day, excited to bring back her strategies and test immediately. 5. Every single person I spoke to - from first timers, to career switchers, to content directors, and VPs - openly challenged popular AI search claims and stated they came to Mozcon to hear from a lineup of the industry’s most respected practitioners. Michael King talks a lot about Relevance Engineering. Our team dedicates a lot of time and effort to ensure the speakers on that stage give you depth, expertise, actionable insight. So, in a way, we too engineer relevance for the Mozcon community by recruiting speakers to fill gaps we know the community needs answers to. . . . Mozcon is a premium event. To attend, host, and be among the greats (Crystal Carter, chima mmeje🏳️🌈, Tom Capper, Debbie Chew, Amanda J., Eric Siu ✓, Josh Blyskal), Michael King) is a life experience I’ll replay forever. I hadn’t MC’d an event like this in 6yrs. But the love that poured out for my own contribution has…reawoken something in me. To every member of the SEO community that sees this: I owe y’all. Thank you for having me. Thank you for teaching me. Let’s show ‘em what we’re made of. 🔥 💪🏾 More to come next week!

The Green Room is my small group program for professional speakers to build their businesses together all year long. It’s very easy for a speaker to feel lonely, or to focus on things they see from others that feel attractive or glossy but don’t actually drive revenue. Other times, we just run in lots of directions without clear priorities, as the work expands but results never compound. But what drives revenue? What increases your impact? What makes the business grow easier? What makes a speaking business a source of continual joy instead of stress? I’ve brought together 10 incredible folks for this program and our first retreat. Our next one is in Q1 2027, and I’m looking to start interviewing a handful of others to join this fall as we carefully, selectively grow this group. I delved into the different AI model brand voices (see what I did there!?) in my newsletter this week. I think we all know based on vibes that Claude sounds more conversational than ChattyG, despite the name. But research this year identified a specific difference between Gemini and the Chatmeister. While the research described it as "a preference for simple, accessible language" I spotted a different brand voice tell - a preference for Latinate or Anglo Saxon verbs.
