When your insurance company owns your doctor, who’s really in charge of your care? This breakdown of UnitedHealth/Optum’s latest Massachusetts acquisition is a wake-up call. The phrase that says it all: “negotiating with themselves.” Your employer’s health plan is supposed to fight for lower prices. But when that same company owns the doctors, labs, imaging centers, AND pharmacies, they’re not negotiating. They’re just setting prices. The data is clear: • 22% more specialist visits • $357 more per patient per year • Tens of millions in inflated spending Most patients don’t even know their doctor’s office is now owned by their insurance company. As PwC reports this week, healthcare inflation is expected to come in at 9% next year, representing more than double the broad rate of inflation in the US economy. At this rate, the US healthcare market will top $9 trillion by 2035. A significant driver of this continued high rate of inflation is the continued lack of transparency in the cost of both services and drugs in the US healthcare market. And with US provider systems consolidating their market power and US health insurers doing the same, it appears this will only continue as these large incumbents continue to flex their muscles and limit choice.
