Today at Stanford University Graduate School of Business we had Prof. Jonathan Levav disserting about how to find those market needed to evolve and coalesce on a differentiated value proposition. Prof. Jonathan Levav is the esteemed King Philanthropies Professor of Marketing at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, where he has shaped the field of behavioral economics through groundbreaking research on consumer judgments and choices. Holding a PhD in marketing from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and an AB in public and international affairs from Princeton University, Levav previously served on the faculty at Columbia Business School before joining Stanford. His work employs experimental psychology and behavioral economics to explore how contextual factors—ranging from social cues to sequential decisions—influence preferences, probability judgments, and product customization. We talk a lot about “customer value” in financial services, but maybe it’s time to rethink what that actually means. In an increasingly commoditized market, the real differentiator will be how well you understand and serve your customers’ full financial reality. If you’re still relying solely on traditional credit data, you’re missing the full picture—and so are your customers. With consumer-permissioned data (think rent, utility, and telco payments), we have a real chance to make credit more inclusive and accurate. This goes beyond better lending decisions. It’s about helping people build credit from the ground up and using modern tech to tap into the financial behaviors they already practice every day. This shift is a necessary one. The institutions that embrace this now are looking beyond the checking accounts of the past. They’re creating real pathways to financial health—and real differentiation in a crowded market.
