William Tennent High School volunteer "Bigs" paired up with Mcdonald Elementary School "Littles" to learn about work in the labs and careers in science, as well as how to build holograms using basic materials and a phone screen. Hank Sharkey shared thisHank Sharkey shared this#MatchMonday 💬 Little Brother Patrick and his Big Brother, Joseph, have been matched since 2011! 💚 Joseph has said that Patrick was always a wonderful kid, and has been a pleasure to support as a Big Brother. Patrick was being raised by a loving and caring mother, but still needed a positive male role model in his life, someone to do "guy" stuff with, someone to talk to and have a one-on-one friendship with. They did many fun activities together based on building a strong, supportive relationship built on time spent together on a consistent basis. Through the years, Patrick was always a good student, school was important to him. Once Patrick entered into highschool, he knew he wanted to go to college. Patrick was a straight-A student, and built great friendships with his peers! Patrick also held down a job while keeping up his impressive grades 🍎✏️ Patrick visited Princeton University's campus and fell in love with it, he knew that this was the school he wanted to go to - he felt a strong connection and didn't apply anywhere else. He recently found out he was accepted to his dream school and will be starting in the fall!! 🎓🧡 His family couldn't be prouder of Patrick. BBBSBC and Joseph are also so incredibly proud. We know he will love continuing his education at Princeton University and will be a huge success in whatever he puts his mind to. They kept explaining it until it stuck. I owe this entire career to those conversations. They also got me involved in Institute of Internal Auditors - Philadelphia Chapter (IIA) for the first time. This week in Singapore, I was named one of the 2026 The Institute of Internal Auditors Excellence Award winners for Global Volunteer Leadership. I am still trying to take it in. You do not volunteer for recognition, so when it comes, it humbles you. I did not get here alone. Nobody in this profession does. Receiving this from Anthony Pugliese and Stefano Comotti, our current IIA Global Chair, means a lot to me. Thank you both for your leadership. Congratulations to my fellow Global Volunteer Leadership winners, Imran Zia and Elena Dobinda along with all the other award winners! To the mentors and friends who shaped me over the years there are too many to list: Jonathan Rothman, Reebu George, Mike Varney, CPA, CIA, Harold Silverman, CPA, CIA, CRMA, QIAL, Adam Ross, Elizabeth Sullivan, CIA, CRMA, CCSA, Karen Brady, CIA CFE CRMA CHIAP, and Theresa "Terry" Grafenstine to name a few. To my fellow board members on the IIA North American and Global Boards, my friends: there have been so many of you I have been grateful to know. Initially my friend shrugged this off and said most organizations are often stuck in the Standardization phase. I pushed back and shared the meme below as 10 years stuck in Standardizing a simple business is not very far along the pursuit of operational excellence is stunting growth.
