Isha Mehrotra shared thisTwo years ago, I came to The University of Chicago Booth School of Business hoping to broaden my perspective, challenge myself, and learn alongside a community of remarkable people. A few weeks ago, I graduated with far more than an MBA—I left with lifelong friends, invaluable mentors, and lessons I'll carry with me for years to come. Over the past two years, Booth pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, take more risks, and grow in ways I never expected. From investing through the Tarrson Impact Investment Fund to helping lead the Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital Group and organizing SeedCon, these experiences shaped how I think, how I lead, and how I approach new challenges. I'm also deeply honored to have been recognized as a Wallman Scholar and as the recipient of the Hyde Park Angels Venture Capital Award. While these recognitions mean a great deal, what I'll value most are the friendships and experiences that made this journey so memorable. Thank you to my classmates, professors, mentors, alumni, friends, and family for making these past two years so meaningful. Excited for what's ahead!

Isha Mehrotra reposted thisIsha Mehrotra reposted thisWhile at Berkeley Law, I have been lucky to find community in so many places, whether that be at California Law Review, Ecology Law Quarterly, the Women+ of Color Collective, or the South Asian Law Students Association. One unexpected place has also been the Native American Law Students Association, which has welcomed me as an ally with open arms. According to the American Bar Association’s 2024 Profile of the Legal Profession, nearly all people of color are underrepresented in the legal profession. I have been fortunate to witness a marked rise in the number of South Asians attending law school with my own eyes over the past three years. In contrast, Native American representation in the legal profession has remained stagnant for the last decade. Berkeley NALSA's mission is to promote the success of Indigenous students, enhance campus discourse on federal Indian law, and foster a strong, inclusive community built on unity, cooperation, and respect. Since Berkeley NALSA's reinstatement in 2018, Indigenous student enrollment at Berkeley Law has doubled, and it continues to grow each year. As a student organization on campus, Berkeley NALSA supports this growth by making Berkeley Law a place where Indigenous students can thrive. To that end, Berkeley NALSA uses donated funds in the following ways (to name a few): ✅ To support student participation in community and cultural events like the Indigenous Peoples Day Sunrise Ceremony on Alcatraz Island; ✅ To support student participation in professional and networking opportunities like the Federal Bar Association’s annual Federal Indian Law Conference in New Mexico, which we plan to send 14 students to this year; and ✅ To support student-led programming that connects students to legal practitioners working across Indian Country, judges at the tribal and federal levels, and professors leading the way in federal Indian law scholarship. Isha Mehrotra shared thisHad a great time organizing and attending The University of Chicago Booth School of Business’s VC Trek to NYC for the second year in a row. Over two jam-packed days, our group of 10 students ran around Manhattan and visited 9 VC firms (!). Across investing stages and focuses, a few consistent themes emerged highlighting what makes founders stand out: 1️⃣ Clarity of thought — deep domain expertise and the ability to distill these earned insights into a compelling vision that attracts customers, talent, and capital. 2️⃣ Maniacal focus on revenue — a strong grasp of unit economics and the drive to find, expand, and scale what works. 3️⃣ Learning velocity — steep learning slopes, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to engage with opposing viewpoints. This year’s theme — Beyond the Hype — moved past surface-level trends to unpack what it is like to build durable products with real value. Across a packed day of panels and workshops, students and industry leaders dug into everything — from AI and deep tech to healthcare, energy, and CPG. A personal highlight was our Enterprise AI panel with with Allison Lechnir (HPVP), Anish Aggarwal (Lightbank), Steve Hind (Lorikeet), and Jack Piunti (ElevenLabs), where we explored how to design AI workflows that don’t just demo well today but actually scale over time. We closed with a fantastic keynote from Thomas Elnick, who shared candid lessons from building Tegus and scaling from zero to acquisition. Huge thank you to my co-organizer Sana Ajani and Juliet Twomey from the Polsky Center at the University of Chicago for being incredible partners in bringing this to life. But back home, in the urban jungle, the wild shows up where it shouldn’t. While I was taking some time off with my wife watching these cats, an alert came through our platform. A home healthcare nurse was assaulted. She was alone on a visit. She pressed the hidden button for three seconds. The alert went out immediately with her location and responders were notified within seconds . Police arrived quickly. She’s safe. In the U.S., two nurses are assaulted every hour . And home healthcare workers don’t have hallways full of colleagues nearby they have driveways, apartments, and unfamiliar environments. Different wilds. Same need for protection. Isha Mehrotra liked thisIsha Mehrotra liked thisRather than spend six-figures on a CCW booth, we hung Bluejay themed door hangers on the hotel room doors of every attendee we could reach. While chatting with the team, we floated an idea that sounded a little ridiculous out loud. Instead of a booth, what if we went completely outside the box and made door hangers, the real hotel kind, with Bluejay on both sides. When you go to CCW, every attendee ends up stacked in the same few hotels on the same floors. So we made the door hanger with cardstock, right weight, shaped exactly like the do not disturb card already on the handle with information to schedule a conversational AI cleaning on both sides. One side read like a sign you’d actually hang on your door: 1. Do not disturb. 2. Conversational AI housekeeping in progress: testing every call, monitoring every chat, and fixing what falls short. Flip it over and it turned into a room service menu: 1. Room service, for your voice and chat AI agents. 2. Bad voice and chat AI responses don’t clean themselves up. bluejay tests, monitors, and self-improves conversational AI before failures reach customers. 3. Schedule your conversational AI’s deep clean. This is the mission at Bluejay. We test conversational AI agents, we monitor them in production, we catch the mess before your customers do. Faraz Siddiqi, Ryan Bishop and I went down the halls of Caesars hanging one on every door we could reach. You walk back to your room after a day of pitches that all blur together, and there’s a card on your door that reads like the hotel left it, until you actually read it. If you stayed at Caesars and your conversational AI feels suspiciously clean, that was us.

Isha Mehrotra liked thisIsha Mehrotra liked thisOne funny thing about leveling up is that your reference set immediately changes. You can be performing really well, feel like you’ve broken through, and then suddenly the conversation is no longer “are you good?” It’s “are you better than the best people in this much smaller room?” In music you sell out one venue and feel incredible for about five minutes, and then immediately start thinking about the next room, the next festival slot, the next version of the show, the next standard, because somehow your brain can’t just enjoy anything like a normal person. Venture feels pretty similar. At a certain point, you can’t just say we’re better than 95% of the market. You have to ask why you’re not better than the top 5%, and then why you’re not better than the top 1%, and then suddenly the entire comparison set changes. It’s exhausting, obviously, but I do think that’s where you want to be. If the bar keeps moving, it means you’re playing in a better game. The mistake is using the old room as your reference point for too long. It might feel good to say you’re ahead of where you used to be, and sometimes you should let yourself enjoy that for more than four seconds, which I am personally working on. But if you want to keep getting better, you have to study the new room. Who is ahead? What are they doing better? Where are you still underdeveloped? What standard did you think was impressive six months ago that now looks like table stakes? Being around people operating at a higher level gives you better data. You don’t need to make every comparison emotional, but you also shouldn’t waste the opportunity to learn from it.

Isha Mehrotra liked thisGoogle’s new Gemma 4 E2B mobile release got me curious, so I spent the weekend testing the WebGPU browser to see what “on-device AI” actually looks like in practice. A few observations: • Cold start: ~35.4s (pretty reasonable given the model is loading entirely in-browser) • Generation: ~43 tok/s cold / ~127 tok/s warm (~3x faster once warmed up) • Peak Chrome GPU process memory: 5.2 - 5.4 GB • JS heap: from 13.7MB to 14.8MB The last number was particularly interesting: the browser barely looked busy. JS memory was almost flat. Yet GPU memory climbed past 5 GB. It reminded me that browser-based AI increasingly behaves less like a web application and more like a GPU application disguised as a web application. Some key #takeaways: The question is no longer simply “Can a capable model run locally?” For many use cases, the answer is already yes. Isha Mehrotra liked thisIsha Mehrotra liked thisI’m excited to share that I’m stepping into the CTO, Compute role at OpenAI. My first 12 months at OpenAI have been incredibly rewarding. Our Compute team has worked relentlessly to bring capacity online quickly and reliably, while doing the deep systems across compute, network and storage, and ML work needed to train frontier models like GPT‑5.6. As we scale, the problems only get harder that require pushing the frontiers and innovating across every layer (literally) of the stack. We’re on a mission to build the world’s largest compute footprint so frontier AI can reach everyone and every workflow. We have a very exciting compute ramp and roadmap coming up. There is a lot to build across large scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing, and data center builds spanning civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Fred Again, Charli XCX, Doechii… these are people who bring you into something bigger than just music. They figured out that when everyone can be creative and the tools are everywhere, music alone isn't enough to hold someone's attention over time. You have to give people something more to participate in. A universe they feel ownership over. What's fascinating about all three of them is they've been grinding for a decade and a half. Doechii's video after she won the Grammys went viral because she'd been fired from her job and doubled down anyway. Charli XCX has been writing songs for hit artists in the background for 15 years, essentially fine-tuning everything while waiting for this moment. Fred was writing for Ed Sheeran before anyone knew who he was. None of this was overnight. The originality people are responding to is the result of years of invisible work. I think about this a lot with what we've been re-exploring in the last year. We've been so hyperfocused on the music that the world-building piece has never come naturally to us. We'd finish something we were proud of and not really think through the universe around it. But as a fan, I want to sit in your world for 45 minutes to an hour and a half. I want to put on the costume when I'm listening and participate in something that feels bigger than a playlist. The artists making me feel that way right now are the ones I can't stop thinking about, and I want to make people feel that way too.

Isha Mehrotra liked thisIsha Mehrotra liked thisBooth Professors Put AI Agents to a Live Test The University of Chicago Booth School of Business researchers, in partnership with trading firm Optiver, have launched a new competition to test how well AI agents can explain stock-price moves following earnings announcements. The agents receive earnings information and make predictions that are scored against subsequent market moves on a public leaderboard. Because the evaluation happens in real time, models cannot benefit from seeing the events in their training data. The competition builds on research by Ralph Koijen and Bradford Levy, who found that optimized agents increased the share of return variation they could explain from 8% to nearly 20%. Levy said earnings calls offered a practical testing ground. “Academics and practitioners care about them,” he told me. “In just one quarter, we’ll have a few thousand observations and be able to evaluate how well the models are doing. And every single quarter, we have brand-new, fresh data.” The next round runs from Aug. 10 through Oct. 2. Competition link below. As more elementary schools commit to integrating computer science instruction into their curricula, they seek guidance on what concepts are appropriate for students at different grade levels. Currently, little is known about how best to sequence computer science learning across elementary grades. In this paper, we present an analysis of 123 students' (age 9-12, grades 4-6) activities in a curriculum implemented in a visual block-based programming language. The goal of this work is to better understand the developmental appropriateness of foundational computer science ideas. All 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in a single school completed the first module of a curriculum during the same school year with the same instructor. We analyzed each task students attempted and found that for simple concepts, there was little difference in performance between grade levels. However, differences were found for more complex topics, such as whether they completed initialization tasks and the way in which they solved 2-d navigation tasks. A closer look revealed that students understood the basic concepts, but were challenged by deeper applications of the basic concepts and influenced by non-computer science skills. This work serves as an empirically grounded investigation of elementary computer science learning and contributes to our understanding of computer science learning trajectories and concept sequencing in the late elementary grades.

I worked as a part of a team, designing page layout and animation on the front-end using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and created graphics in Adobe Illustrator to enhance the display.
