Jake Backers reposted thisJake Backers reposted thisOn Friday, my fiancé and I were unfortunately a part of the thousands of Americans across U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to be terminated, without proper cause, due to our status as probationary employees (i.e., having been hired within 1-2 years). According to the letter I received on Friday, I was terminated due to “inadequate performance,” after just receiving the highest score possible on my most recent performance review. ⭐️✨ Here are some select accomplishments during my time at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH): · I was a part of the planning that went into the 2024 National Strategy for #SuicidePrevention, a document that lays out a plan to reduce the number of suicides in the country. · I organized many meetings/webinars/etc. to advance the science of suicide prevention. One of which brought together researchers, death investigators, and data collection teams to better understand factors associated with child and youth suicide (publication linked in my profile!). · I won 4 NIMH Directors awards for various funding opportunities I co-wrote, including one to help reduce Black youth suicide. · I won an HHS Office of Grants Equity Advancement Award for my work on my Institute’s #Disparities Team for advancing the mental health equity initiative by leading the Social Determinants of Health Committee (separate from my day-to-day job). All to say, I am #OpenToWork, and I am eager to start applying my skills and knowledge in public health to a new role. 🧐💡 Who Am I and What I Bring to the Table · I am a social epidemiologist by training, with content expertise in #LGBTQHealth, #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth and #MentalHealth in the United States. · I am currently a Doctor of Public Health Candidate (all but dissertation) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with plans to complete this part-time degree in the next year. · I have spent most of my post-MPH career in the public health funding space: —I held a contract portfolio of over $70 million at the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) in the Healthcare Delivery and Disparities Research department, and, most recently, —I was a Program Officer and the Program Manager for the Suicide Research Team at the National Institute of Mental Health. · I have experience in grantwriting and initiative development; large-scale strategic plan development; qualitative and quantitative methods for evaluation; scoping reviews, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews; project and program management; and, grant administration. 🔎👀 What I’m Looking For · Research, strategy, or grant management positions.
