Hostility happens because people do not feel heard or are triggered by something that was said. The very first thing I do when I notice I've been triggered or someone else has been is simply to ask, "have I triggered you" That simple question helps everyone take a step back and reconsider the communication.
It takes some training to notice when you've been triggered and it takes some work to know what triggers you, so when I am working with a coachee one of the most important aspects of our relationship is to identify their triggers. When they can own their trigger and acknowledge they've been triggered to someone else, open communication can begin.
